Valve Snaps Up Defense of the Ancients Dev
By Michael McWhertor, 1:40 PM on Mon Oct 5 2009

Valve has made a hire that should perk up the ears of the Warcraft III mod community, as "IceFrog," the current developer of ultra popular Defense of the Ancients Allstars, has found gainful employment at the house of Half-Life.

The announcement was made via the DotA forums, with IceFrog writing that he is "now leading a team at Valve" and "finally have all the resources needed to do some very exciting stuff that you guys will love." And by "you guys," we're guessing that means Defense of the Ancients Allstars players. Which would hopefully mean continued development of the mod.

What exactly the DotA dev will be doing at Valve, we don't yet know. But we did confirm that hire with Valve who was regrettably unable to offer any further details into the addition to the team.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

hmmm dota in fps sounds exciting.

maybe a futuristic dota with guns, physic and all etc. like mass effect.

should be like this:

heroes + creeps = controlled by players.

heroes: 5 vs 5 = 10 players

the rest can jump in and use any creep

hmm.. wait.. sounds like fail ..

You know what, I'll be interested to have a look at whatever this is. The main issue I have with all these DoTA games was the extremely limited control. I always felt like there was a lack of strategy involved in them. I know this isn't the point of them. But I never felt the appeal of levelling a single character. Moving around, rinse and repeat.

WHat is interesting is that most of these DoTA games are positioned as a strategy game/RTS in which most in the genre involve controlling a large army(you become an armchair general not a single hero). But in the FPS genre, you are always only controlling a single character anyway(the exceptions are a few tactical games). In an FPS game, I wont have the expectation of having battlefield control like a typical strategy game.

I think this could mean less of the mental block I have for this particular genre.

I think everyone who hates DotA have different issues with it.

I dislike it because it has zillions of items and heroes to play with, where it is hard to learn.Secondly,it felt very lack of control to me and too simplified in terms of scale. It wasnt epic and the map always the same.I also find it's draggy, with most of the time farming with creeps and the ridiculously long spawn time is just annoying.

Still, the new gen of RTS,like DoW2,C&C4 and the rest pretty much against the big armies and arm chair general concept. It's getting dumbed down,as no one actually enjoys base building or large scale battles these days for some reason.

Wow, even Valve is gonna spam DoTA now.

Considering there is like HON, Demigod and LOH or something.

If that was the case, Valve should've hired the Natural Selection team instead.

I personally think its going to be something pretty radical.

We'll just have to wait and see what comes out of this. I'm curious as to how far he can take things via Valve's engine.
