Astro, ESPN win EPL broadcast rights for Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — Malaysia’s pay-TV operator Astro All Asia Networks said today it had won the rights to broadcast the English Premier League (EPL) for the next three years in the Southeast Asian country.

Astro, which won the bid jointly with sports content provider ESPN, did not specify how much it bid for the rights but The Star newspaper cited sources as saying the firm had forked out RM800 million.

How much more are you willing to pay for the ASTRO sports package?

the recent hike in sports package price has already reduced an amount of sports package subscriber...if they increase the price again in a very short time...i'm very sure this is gonna piss off a lot of customers regarding they are paying more for the broadcasting or not...

To be honest, whether they increase the price or not, im sure subscribers would still be paying for it as they dont have a choice if they love sports. Unhappy or pissed off would definitely be there but they would pay for the sports channel and mayb cut down for other packages. Sports = part of life for most ppl.

i agree with the Football package thingy. Make it a pay-per-view thingy. So, people will have their choice on which game to view. I think this is the most viable options rather than increasing their sports package as it is already expensive to have.

I agree. If they wanna increase the price then might as well just have one channel for EPL. I mean, they've only won the rights to broadcast the EPL. Maybe they can even have it on pay-per-view. Pay by team.

I agree with this, i think EPL cost a lot for Astro for their sport package, better "a la-carte" EPL.
I do watch other sports e.g F1,NBA,Baseball and tennis and would hate to cancel/pay more for that in lieu of sport package increase due to Astro paying top dollar for the right to broadcast the EPL games.
Or you guys could cancel sport package during EPL summer break and re-subscribed back when season abt to start?

How much is the price increase for the Sports Package?
There will be an addition of RM12 across any packages that includes sports. This means that if you are currently on the Basic package + 1 Mini Package + Sports at RM54.95 per month, your new price will be RM66.95 per month.

The increase of RM12, which is equal to one cinema ticket, works out to be an additional 40 sen daily for which you and your family get to enjoy non stop premium and live sports programmes on 5 channels.

you cant just get sports package, need to get at least 1 mini + sports(includes basic - rm 37.95)..the price is rm29(+1 mini).

I dont think we will get all. like now, we only have 3 channels which are espn, supersports and star sports. unless we get extra channels and selected matches only will be televised.

Oh.. I forgot about the EPL break. Then it's really not fair to charge us for the whole year for something that we only watch for 8 months (or less). Put EPL on pay-per-view.

well yeah..if the entire sports package is hiking just because of epl, maybe should make it PPP just like on astro box office(indian cricket etc). But maybe the mamaks prefer monthly fees which sounds easier tongue.gif

I think this one is down to ESPN/Star rather than ASTRO.

But I do feel that the production quality on ESPN/Star this year looks a bit... off...

The new sets look cheap, there are fewer pundits (which may be a good thing), from witty International guests such as John Beresford, Lee Sharpe and Macca (That's Steve... Not the fat bald) now we get Abbas Saad.

And Football Crazy!! What happened to this show? The new guy is p!ss poor unfunny. I used to like watching the wacky stuff they do like challenging local teams to score from direct from corners, the score predictor, etc etc. They should just spend the money to import Soccer AM.

Ok sudah lari topic...

Another price increase so soon after would be suicidal. Still, I think having it would be a much better alternative than going out at 3 in the morning every other week for the Champions League.

Yeah I do agree that the content for football this year has been piss poor. Football Focus is prob still the best becoz we get views from those who actually are knowledgeable about the sport and the highlights are good for those who want a review of the week's actions. Football Crazy has gone down the drain since they decided to hire a pretty boy to compliment a pretty gal. Andy Penders used to be hilarious, and Jamie's only okay (would be extremely hot if she supported Man United of course), but the days where they had Jien and all were still the best.

If they increase , I'll switch to Computer. At least with 4Mbps streamyx its possible to stream HD Content. so those of you who are planning to say goodbye to suckstro , its better to opt for 4Mbps streamyx. At least you get a premium IP range with good connectivity or wait for HSBB

i heard astro might be opening dedicated channels for teams like CHELSEA, MANU, ARSENAL and etc...so that each dedicated fans can watched ALL LIVE matches from their preferred teams ONLY.

e.g. if u are cfc fan, subscribe for chelsea tv only. i guess this is a good idea.

so the package might be something like this:

SPORTS PACKAGE + CHELSEA TV or MANU TV or ARSENAL TV etc

hope astro don't increase the price anymore if they want their LOYAL customers to remain.
why not channels like golf & eurosport are separated...so tht we can choose the channel tht we can subscribe to the channel tht we preferred only.

MAYBE put in simplest way: FOOTBALL PACKAGE, MOTOR SPORTS PACKAGE, GOLF PACKAGE, ALTERNATIVE SPORTS PACKAGES (tennis, swimming, ski jump & etc)

PAY WHAT U WANT! flex.gif

just my thought.

If not TM for entering the bid, Astro won't need to put high price for the right.
I don't think Astro should be blamed on this issue.

Astro is not the culprit or receiving end on the money, the money (broadcast right) will go to EPL eventually more money for EPL clubs, more wages increment for the players.

We are paying for the players's wages actually which has increase several fold over the last few years. The players wages simply sky-rocketing over the last few years as well as transfer fee.

higher player wages = higher sponsorship required(espn- in terms of broadcasting too)= astro pay more to espn = we pay more to astro.

i wonder y they took out so many stars like Jien, Andy Penders off from the football crazy... the new guy totally can't be a host - consistently looking at his notes and DEFINITELY VERY LAME WITH HIS JOKES... and...

the UCL is lousy... no clock timer... no preview anymore from Skysports... no pundits from ESPN for the matches either...

so far only enjoying football focus and their regular matches...

may be they can do BPL on demand like StarHub did in singapore, $3 per game

I would be much much happier if the actually brought in Skysports in here. Also, I'm sure most of us would watch other football matches other than just the matches of the club we support. For instance, I support Liverpool, and Liverpool doesn't play until 11.55PM. So usually, I as a football fan would want to watch the earlier games etc right? So with this new Astro concept thing, would this be possible? Or not..?

And yes, I agree. Wtf's up with UCL these days? Don't even know how many minutes left etc.. Just hook up a damn timer for gods sake. Last year was awesome, and now... it's like poop. Football crazy isn't "crazy" anymore. It's all stupid.

Price hike is ultimately the customer's fault, it's a supply demand thing. If enough people stop subscribing, soon enough the price will drop.

It is like chicken and eggs issue.

If there is not enough demand to meet the cost of broadcasting, Astro might not broadcast it at all. So ended no live EPL across as cost is too high. Astro is not the like gov owned TV, then need to make profit to survive.

If more people stop subscribing, it means Astro no longer exist, not the price drop.

Just like decades back, we don't have a chance to see live match on league (when there is no Astro back then), only once awhile got chance to see the FA cup final only under sponsorship of tobacco company.

What the eff is wrong with Astro?

UCL coverage this season is pure shit.

No pre-match show (okay for some people)
NO EFFING TIMER (you're f***ed if you wake up late and wont know the scorelines or TIME on both channels)
No after-match show (you wont know what the result and highlights from the other match)

Even if they can't get pre/after match show is it too hard to put a TIMER with SCORE ?

It's so disappointing and i'm pretty pissed about it
