AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Reds rule Britannia

QUOTE
It probably won't be remembered as a classic, but Sir Alex Ferguson was more than happy with the way his players navigated Saturday's tricky trip to Stoke.

Goals from Dimitar Berbatov and John O'Shea clinched a 2-0 win and sent United to the top of the table, but the Reds were made to work hard for the points by a stubborn Stoke side.

"The Britannia is a difficult place to come," the boss told MUTV. "No one gets it easy here – Stoke's home record tells you that. We saw a really good performance by Manchester United.

"I think we played very well and showed plenty of composure throughout the game."

The Reds enjoyed almost 70 per cent of the possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances against Stoke's determined defence.

"We didn't quite have the penetration to round off our possession," the manager admitted. "Antonio Valencia had a great chance in the first half, but he just clipped it past the post.

"We had a lot of the ball, created maybe one or two near things, but nothing concrete in terms of a real chance. The goalkeeper made a couple of saves from Nani, but other than that it was a case of having possession of the ball but not creating enough chances.

"In the second half we were much better. It was a good day for us."

The Reds are next in action on Wednesday night in the Champions League before returning to domestic action next Saturday when Sunderland visit Old Trafford.

Joy for John

QUOTE
John O'Shea was hugely satisfied with a goal on his 350th United appearance and paid tribute to its creator, Ryan Giggs, whose cameo second half display turned the game in United's favour.

It was the Welshman's right wing free-kick which O'Shea rose to head past Thomas Sorensen in the Stoke goal, having earlier set up Dimitar Berbatov to open the scoring.

"Giggsy's experience of taking up different positions and taking advantage of any gaps proved crucial," O'Shea told MUTV. "The great run he made for the first goal was him all over. The way he used his experience to get on the blind side of the defender was brilliant.

"I was really pleased to score especially against a team who are so strong on set pieces.

"It was a great ball in from Giggsy - I said to him I'd try and get across the keeper - and thankfully I was able to knock it in."

The victory was United's seventh on the trot in all competitions since the shock defeat at Burnley and, alongside Chelsea's loss at the DW Stadium, took them top of table. And O'Shea keeping that fine run going is the only thing on the players' minds.

"We knew we had to put a good run together after the Burnley defeat which was a freak result," he explained.

"We've always responded well to results like that with a great run of victories, but the games keep on coming and we've got to keep that run going."

Sir Alex hails Giggs impact

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson heaped yet more praise on Ryan Giggs following the Reds’ impressive 2-0 win over Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

The Welshman stepped off the bench at 0-0 to create both goals, first latching on to Darren Fletcher's fine threaded pass to cross for Berbatov to tap in, then curling in a free-kick for John O’Shea to head home.

The United boss was delighted with Giggs’ contribution, and hailed his positional sense as a key factor in the midfielder’s performance.

“He’s important, he made the goals,” Sir Alex told MUTV. “I felt his intelligence would give them a bit of bother on that side of the pitch.

"I think Nani did his job quite well. He kept penetrating and keeping them pinned back, but Ryan brings you something else. He’s got the intelligence to take up good positions and for the first goal he made a lovely run in behind them to get the pass from Darren Fletcher and roll it along for Berbatov to score.”

Ferguson was also elated with Giggs’ free-kick that led to O’Shea’s header, which sealed the winner and made the Irishman’s 350th appearance for the Reds one to remember.

“It was a nice free-kick from Ryan. You’re always looking for that second goal to kill the game – the sooner it comes the better.

“I felt we were a much bigger threat in the second half, particularly after we scored.”

Faith in Foster

QUOTE
Nemanja Vidic insists he and his fellow defenders have total confidence in goalkeeper Ben Foster.

The 26-year-old stopper came in for criticism during last Sunday's derby victory after his failure to deal with a hopeful ball forward from City led to the Blues' opening goal.

Despite seeing Tomasz Kuszczak keep a clean sheet and put on a good performance in the Carling Cup win over Wolves in midweek, Sir Alex opted to stick with Foster for Saturday's trip to Stoke and he repaid his manager's faith with a clean sheet and solid display.

And Vidic says the defence have great belief in the England international.

"I feel very comfortable with Ben in goal and I have great confidence in him," the Serbian told ManUtd.com.

"The more games you play with the same keeper or the same defenders the more you learn how to play with each other.

"Everyone makes mistakes, that’s normal, but we all know what a good keeper Ben is."

Manchester United are said to be closing in on the signature of Grenoble starlet Sofiane Feghouli, according to reports in France.

The 19-year-old has, like many before him, been dubbed the 'new Zidane' by the French media and has seen his name linked with a number of Europe's biggest clubs.

Despite the high level of interest the attacking midfielder has been quick to stress that he is happy learning his trade in Ligue 1 rather than warming the bench abroad.

However, the situation has changed considerably after Feghouli criticised Grenoble fans for their lack of support in recent weeks.

Grenoble find themselves bottom of the table having lost all seven of their league games this term, giving the impression that Feghouli has outgrown the French outfit.

The youngster was expected to depart last summer with Barcelona, Liverpool and Inter Milan monitoring his situation.

However, it now appears that Sir Alex Ferguson has upped his interest in the star and could be prepared to bid for Feghouli in January.

Nani turns to Cristiano aid

QUOTE
Nani has revealed he turns to ex-Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo whenever he needs a confidence booster.

The Portugal international is likely to have exhausted his phone bill at the weekend following a poor display at Stoke.

The skilful 22-year-old was wasteful to say the least in United's 2-0 win at Stoke before being hauled off early in the second half for Ryan Giggs, who helped set up both goals for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Nani has revealed he remains close with Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo and the pair often talk about how he can improve his game.

Confidence

"Cristiano and I talk a lot," explained Nani. "We speak about my own game and he gives me confidence to go out and perform."

The world's most expensive player Ronaldo has backed his international colleague's credentials and believes that in the coming years he will be amongst the world's best.

Ronaldo said: "Nani is an excellent player and I am sure that in a few years he will be among the best players in the world."

Its the decision making that makes most of us tearing our hairs out sweat.gif rclxub.gif icon_question.gif

We all know he has the skills & ability but just to know when to do what. I remember the commentator did said there was a time when Rooney was anticipating an early cross from him but he end up dragging it too long and end up a goal kick for Stoke instead.

ANNAN FLATTERED BY ENGLISH INTEREST

QUOTE
Rosenborg ace Anthony Annan admits he is flattered by the reported interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

Speculation has been rife in Norway and the 23-year-old's homeland of Ghana that the English sides have stepped up their interest in the midfielder.

The former Start player only signed for Rosenborg last year but has already attracted interest from a whole host of English clubs.

Annan was thought to be close to a switch to Blackburn last summer after impressing on trial but a move failed to materialise.

But it now appears comparisons with national team-mate Michael Essien have alerted the Gunners and Red Devils.

"Essien is a top player, to be (compared) alongside him is amazing," he told skysports.com.

"He has everything, class, power, touch, stamina, what a player, to compare him to me? People are crazy. I learn a lot alongside him, he is simply awesome.

"To me, to be followed by Arsenal and Man United, they are two great teams. I just won the league here let me enjoy it and we will see in the future."

For the time being Annan is determined to focus all his attention on the World Cup next summer and the African Cup of Nations in January.

"I can't wait to represent Ghana in South Africa, but in January we need to go for the African Nations Cup."

The right result

QUOTE
Dimitar Berbatov says United's positive approach to Saturday's game at Stoke City merited the 2-0 win and three points that took the Reds to the summit of the Barclays Premier League.

Despite being away from home, Sir Alex's men enjoyed approximately 70 per cent of possession in a game in which United goalkeeper Ben Foster didn't have a save to make.

Resolute Stoke defending kept the Reds at bay until the 62nd minute when Berbatov tapped home from close range to finish off a cross from influential substitute Ryan Giggs.

"I think the game changed when Ryan came on," the Bulgarian told MUTV. "You can see the years he has been playing for Manchester United. They really help when you come on to the pitch and make decisions.

"That’s what gave us the three points: his decisions. He played the pass to me to score, and then the free-kick [for United's second on 77 minutes] was another assist for him.

"We needed the three points and we deserve them. Stoke threw everything they had at us and it was a difficult game, but in the end we deserved to win because we attacked them. We wanted to score and we eventually did."

Berbatov's strike was only his second this season and third in his last 22 United apperances. Before the match he'd been subject to scrutiny for a strike-rate some perceive to be sub-standard for a centre-forward. But he insists his goal on Saturday carried no special significance.

"What can I tell you? The most important thing about me scoring is that it put us 1-0 up. Whoever scores it puts us top of the table and keeps us winning. That's what really matters."

The victory took United ahead of Chelsea on goal difference. The Reds meet Sunderland next, at Old Trafford on Saturday 3 October.

Reds don't fall for intimidation

QUOTE
The Britannia Stadium is one of the Premier League's more hostile and intimidating venues – even for commentators.

As ever, myself and Paddy Crerand covered the game for MUTV on Saturday. Quite often, we are tucked away on a gantry or in a booth somewhere. But at Stoke, the commentary box is very close to the home fans. In fact they were in the row directly in front of us. To say the least, they were passionate!

Every time even a slightly contentious decision went United's way, one fan with an alarmingly intense stare would turn round to face me and Paddy and gave us a bit of an earful.

This man clearly didn’t realise that Paddy is a man who relishes an argument. More than once in the game, off came Paddy’s headphones, he put down the microphone and engaged in a, shall we call it, debate with the fan.

Indeed, MUTV viewers with pin-sharp hearing might have been able to pick up bits of this discussion in the background of my commentary. It was basically good-natured banter, but also more than a little off-putting.

By the end of the game all of the Stoke fans had quietened down, though. All you could hear was the United fans going through their full repertoire of witty songs - “It’s just like watching Port Vale” and “Where’s your famous atmosphere?” getting an airing.

Stoke looked incredibly limited. Tactics of “get nine outfield players behind the ball and pump it up to Kitson to see what he can do” deserved nothing and that’s what they got.

After last weekend’s defensive problems, United were back in rock solid mode again – Foster caught everything and Vidic and Ferdinand headed all the bombs that Stoke launched away.

In last week’s blog, I lavished praise on Ryan Giggs. I’ve got no option but to do that again today.

The Reds totally dominated the game on Saturday but just couldn't make it count until Giggs replaced Nani. A cool head and his intelligent use of the ball was what was required to unlock the door.

First he played in Berbatov for a tap-in, after Darren Fletcher's defence-splitting pass, then found the head of John O’Shea with a pin-point free kick. Job done. He could have scored himself if he’d converted Scholes’ wonderful pass.

Scholes had been the best player on the pitch by a country mile, a point graciously accepted by Tony Pulis.

Giggs and Scholes, still doing the business. Legends. What on earth will we do when they retire? That’s a debate for another day.

That's not Rio I think. You can see Rio's head just beside/infront of Berba.

Looking back the video itself, looks like its Evra who got "sandwiched" between the players! laugh.gif

Sir Alex Ferguson and other sports stars put their artistic talents on display

QUOTE
Artwork by sporting legends, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Theo Walcott, Thierry Henry, Joe Calzaghe and Shane Warne, created for a fundraising exhibition, are available for fans to buy.

The Art of Sport exhibition is being held at the Catto Gallery, Hampstead, London, until Sunday, in aid of the Willow Foundation, and the artworks featured can be bought either at the gallery or direct from the charity.

The Willow Foundation, set up by Arsenal legend Bob Wilson and his wife Megs, provides special, morale-boosting and memorable days for seriously ill people aged 16 to 40.

Its fundraising exhibition features unique "impact" artworks created by famous sportsmen using the tools of their trade, such as footballs, boxing gloves and even tyres, to apply paint to canvas.

Stars from the worlds of football, snooker, golf, cricket, motor cycling and boxing including Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie, Theirry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Jens Lehmann, Ricky Hatton and Ronnie O'Sullivan have taken part, with each piece of art signed by its creator.

Willow Foundation ambassador and Arsenal striker, Theo Walcott, said: "I am proud to be an ambassador for The Willow Foundation.

"Having seen the work they do first hand in helping seriously ill young adults I was delighted to get involved with this art exhibition."

Bob Wilson, said: "The generous support and creativity of this great mix of sports personalities has produced a superb range of artwork, which ultimately helps the Willow Foundation to make a difference to the lives of people living with life threatening conditions at a time when they need it most.

"Sports fans will love impact art, so come along to the exhibition or take a look at the artwork online."

Originals and signed prints are available to buy, with all proceeds to the Willow Foundation. To view the artwork go to http://www.willowfoundation.org.uk/artofsport.

The exhibition at the Catto Gallery, 100 Heath Street, London, NW3 1DP, is open to the public from Friday to Sunday and entry is free.

To date the Willow Foundation has provided more than 5,000 special days for people living with cancer, cystic fibrosis, motor neurone disease and muscular dystrophy, among other conditions.

I have free time last 2-3 months. Won't be free soon.

That, and/or a certain hairy English-Canadian.. laugh.gif Thank god he's back soon. If Fletcher is out, we can rely on him. CL 433.. midfield will fix itself as long as Fletcher is there and his partners do their job, but those supporting Rooney will have to do better than they have so far shown. We can't leave him so isolated upfront..
*
Agreed on the support for Rooney part. When he is isolated, he will start dropping back to midfield icon_question.gif and that will probably piss SAF [who want him to stay up top] off! laugh.gif

QUOTE(Wan @ Sep 29 2009, 03:16 PM)
That Julio Cesar does look fantastic from youtube clips. Strong hands there. He's 30.. got his chance at Inter when he was 26(same age as Foster is now).. hardly heard of his name except last few years. I'm almost hoping VDS will be out a bit longer or won't straightaway get into the team just to see how Foster handle being a Utd GK for a few more months. If he doesn't do anymore mistakes in the next 3 games till VDS get's back, we should keep him there till mid season and see how things goes. We can use VDS in the 2nd part of the season where the games will be of higher importance and give Foster runs out in the cup games, and a few league games. Even if VDS decides to stay in goal next season for us, we should just give that experience to Foster if we can afford it.. I just can't see us getting in another GK that would guarantee success there in goal unless we spunk over 30m for one. That Barca GK.. Casillas.. they all broke through since they were young.. if they  can have that chances, we can give it to Foster too to see how he develops.
*
I can understand it if the club is actually start looking for another GK. First of all, VDS will only decide in December if he stay on another year. The is a possibility that he might hang up his gloves after this season. Another thing is that how well Kuszczak is taking it after Foster pipped him in the pecking order? Will he be looking to move as well?

We could easily end up with Foster as our only senior GK after that and I don't see either Zieler/Amos make the big step up required yet.
