Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez has explained his reasons for not celebrating his goals against West Ham on Monday, saying that "part of me will always be a Hammer". However, following the treatment he received at Old Trafford recently, the Argentine says he will not extend the same courtesy if he scores against his former club Manchester United. (Daily Mail)

Rooney can reach greatness

QUOTE
Five years after Wayne Rooney began his United career in seismic style with a debut Champions League hat-trick, Sir Alex Ferguson feels the firebrand forward is well on his way to reaching greatness.

Not 24 until next month, Rooney's storming start to the current campaign has seen him pass a century of United goals and join the pacesetters in the race for the Barclays Premier League golden boot.

Having worked closely with the England international for half a decade, Sir Alex is in little doubt as to how far Rooney can go.

"He hasn't at any point disappointed us," the United manager said at his pre-Wolfsburg press conference. "When we signed him as a young kid we thought exactly the same as today; that he will become a real top player.

"There are some great players like Kaka, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - they're the three best players in the world, I think, and Wayne could easily get to that level, with the right progress.

"He is going in that direction without question. He's blessed with certain ingredients that only great footballers have. Great determination and hunger to win every match. Every time he goes on the field, every training session, he's blessed with that. It won't ever change for him and these are wonderful things to take into the game of football today.

"You sometimes wonder about the criticism of what footballers get paid, but when you see that effort he puts in, he's worth every penny he's paid. He plays as if he means it and I think it's a  wonderful thing to have."

Sir Alex brackets Rooney alongside a number of United greats who have given their all for the cause, and he points out that the striker's desire to be control and win games will forever be his fuel.

"We've had countless players at this club - like Roy Keane, Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce - who have had that great desire to win matches. It's a pre-requisite coming to this club and we like to think our identification of footballers includes that.

"Wayne's a funny animal. He thinks he's a good centre half, and I wouldn't bet against that! He is the coach now, he tells me. Manager, coach and referee! He's got a great desire and you can't put that down. It's always there."

Martins: Reds don't miss Ron

QUOTE
Former Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has warned his Wolfsburg colleagues that United will pose problems in Wednesday's Champions League clash, regardless of a summer of change at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo lines up against Marseille in the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening, while Carlos Tevez was in goalscoring action for Manchester City on Monday. But Martins, who is enjoying a new lease of life after his own summer move, sees through those high-profile departures.

"Even without Ronaldo and Tevez, I would say you face the same problems playing against United," Martins told BBC Sport. "In fact, I would even say they are playing much better than before.

"When Ronaldo was on the pitch, everyone looked to him, expecting him to change the game when his team most needed it. But now United have a lot of players who can change a game, like Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov. Even the defenders can score goals, so we must watch out for them all over the pitch."

The Nigerian concedes that he holds Rooney in special regard, and is aware that he and his new team-mates must beware United's number 10 on Wednesday.

"He is my favourite, no question," he said. "He is playing so well at the moment, he can destroy defenders in an instant.

"He is scoring goals, maybe more goals than before, and he is helping the team in lots of other ways as well. He is a player we need to be very, very careful of.

"I've told my team-mates about Rooney and all the United players but they know United have a team full of top-class footballers. Everyone knows that."

Wolfsburg are renowned for their own prolific goalscoring form, however, and Martins has been taken aback by his fellow strikers' quality.

"The quality of the squad has surprised me a lot since I arrived," he said. "There is a lot of talent here, no big-name players, but people who can play football - not least Grafite and (Ezin) Dzeko, who are both very, very good," added Martins.

"Grafite can score from absolutely anywhere and Dzeko is very strong, he can keep the ball and bring the midfielders into play. It is easy to play with these guys because they are big and strong and can hold it up for me.

"We are an attacking team, that's the way we play, so it is going to be tough for Manchester United as well. It will be a fun game, very interesting."

Groin injury sidelines Owen

QUOTE
Michael Owen could be unavailable for up to three weeks after aggravating a groin injury in the win over Wolfsburg.

The striker sat out training on Tuesday as a precaution, but had to be replaced by Dimitar Berbatov after only 20 minutes of the Reds' Champions League clash against the German champions at Old Trafford following a recurrence of the complaint.

"Michael felt his groin on Sunday, but he trained a bit on Monday and then we gave him a rest on Tuesday to make sure he'd be available for the Wolfsburg game because it was always my plan to play him," Sir Alex told MUTV afterwards.

"Unfortunately he turned quickly on the wet surface and felt the injury.

"It's difficult to say how long he'll be out for - with groins it's usually around 2-3 weeks. But his fitness is very good and that will help."

The former Liverpool striker will no doubt be desperate to get fit for the Reds' Barclays Premier League trip to Anfield which takes place in just over three weeks time.

Giggs puts team first

QUOTE
It was another landmark evening for man of the moment Ryan Giggs, but United's most decorated servant remained as modest as ever after the Reds' win over Wolfsburg, preferring to focus on the team performance rather than his own.

Four minutes after Sir Alex's men had gone behind to an Edin Dzeko header, the Welshman drew United level from a free-kick, albeit via a huge deflection off the Wolfsburg wall, and claimed his 150th goal in a red shirt.

Only eight other players have reached the milestone, but United's record appearance-maker, who went on to set up Michael Carrick for a sublime winner against the German champions, was keen to shift the praise onto the team rather than himself.

"I'm proud to have scored that amount of goals, but it was more important that we got back in the game so soon after they went ahead," he told ITV Sport. "It was a poor free-kick to be fair, but we got that little bit of luck with the deflection.

"We played well in the first half, but we were just lacking that quality pass in the final third. They're a good side and their two strikers are a real handful. But thankfully we got that bit of luck with our first goal and showed great character to come back and win it."

The veteran midfielder has been a potent force of late and has scored or created nine of United's 13 goals in the last five games in which he has featured. "Players go through periods of good form and at the moment I'm enjoying my football," he added. "I've made a few goals and hopefully that will continue."

Simple. Its hard to please all the fans who has their own opinion/biasness on certain players smile.gif

Didn't watch the game so cant comment on the individual performances but here is what's mentioned in the official match report:

QUOTE
Berbatov, thrown on for the injured Michael Owen on 20 minutes, delivered what was arguably his finest performance yet in a red shirt. Astounding touch, vision and accuracy of passing permeated his play from start to finish, as everything United created seemed to go through the Bulgarian.

Fergie keeps faith with Foster

QUOTE
Manchester United are set to keep faith with goalkeeper Ben Foster for Saturday's visit of Sunderland.

Foster missed out on a first-team spot for the midweek game against German side Wolfsburg, with Tomasz Kuszczak deputising in his absence.

But Sir Alex Ferguson will restore the England hopeful between the sticks against the Black Cats at the weekend.

The 26-year-old came under scrutiny after a poor performance in the Manchester derby when a first-half error led to Gareth Barry scoring City's first goal.

Support

And although he kept a clean sheet against Stoke, Foster missed out in the Carling Cup against Wolves last week, and in the UEFA Champions League against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

"Tomasz Kuszczak produced a very good performance against Wolves last week and we felt he deserved to play another game," Ferguson said.

"It wasn't going to be last Saturday though because we had to give Ben some support after that difficult game against Manchester City.

"It was a good opportunity for us to play Tomasz (against Wolfsburg) but Ben will play on Saturday."

QUOTE
Wayne Rooney says he is prepared to miss Manchester United's Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow if it clashes with wife Coleen giving birth.

The couple's first child is due on 24 October- also Rooney's 24th birthday - three days after United play in Moscow.

"Of course I want to be there for the birth of my child," said the striker.

"If anything happens around the days of travelling then I'm sure I'll stay back and won't go, but unless that happens I will be there playing."

United top Group B after winning their opening two matches.

After beating Besiktas 1-0, they made it two wins out of two with a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

QUOTE
Wayne Rooney has admitted that he could miss Manchester United's clash with CSKA Moscow to be at the birth of his first child.

The 23-year-old's wife, Coleen, is due to give birth on the 24th October - also the striker's birthday - just three days after United travel to Moscow for their UEFA Champions League clash.

The Red Devils may have won their opening two Champions League games but the match in Russia threatens to be their toughest European test of the season so far.

If the baby arrives later than expected then the England international could miss the champions' game with Liverpool at Anfield on the 25th October.

However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson may have something to say about that especially if Michael Owen is still sidelined with the groin injury he picked up against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

"Of course I want to be there for the birth of my child and if anything happens around the days of travelling then I'm sure I'll stay back and won't go but unless that happens I will be there playing," Rooney explained.

"It's due a few days after. Of course it's a long way (to Moscow) but I've got a job to go and play for United so unless anything happens then I'll be there."

Hargreaves set for free-kick role

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson believes Owen Hargreaves is the man to replace Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United's set-piece specialist.

Ronaldo's summer departure to Real Madrid has created an opportunity for another member of the United squad to take on the responsibility from free-kicks.

The evergreen Ryan Giggs has scored twice from such situations this season, while Wayne Rooney has also been keen to get involved.

However, with the imminent return of Hargreaves from a long-term knee injury, United boss Ferguson feels the midfielder can assume Ronaldo's mantle.

Bonus

"Outside Cristiano Ronaldo, I don't think there is a better deliverer of set pieces than Owen," said Ferguson.

"That is one of the areas in which he may help us more.

"People may look upon free-kicks as minimal. I see them as an added detail to a football team.

"Ronaldo could get three or four goals like that. We are still searching for someone else. If Owen can do it, that will be a bonus for us."

Hargreaves has not played a first-team game in over 12 months after undergoing surgery on both knees to fix a long-standing tendinitis problem, but is now close to a return to action.

No reaction

Ferguson added: "He is coming along fine. His physio has gone back to America so he is completely in our control now and hopefully he will be back into football training quite soon.

"The signs are good. There has been absolutely no reaction to the operations.

"It has been a long road for the boy but he made a sacrifice by staying in America for a year to make sure he was right.

"That shows a good determination to come back and do well."

Boss: It was an off-day

QUOTE
United rescued a point from a bad performance, according to Sir Alex, who was disappointed with the Reds’ lack of passing accuracy and creativity in the final third of the field.

Anton Ferdinand’s deflection from Patrice Evra’s 92nd-minute shot earned a draw, but Sir Alex was still unhappy. “We rescued a game in which we played so badly,” Sir Alex told MUTV. “Our passing was just not what I expect of the team, right throughout the game. We tried to change it round by bringing Anderson on for the second half. But we continued to give the ball away repeatedly.”

Darren Bent had given Sunderland the lead after seven minutes, with United just not at the races in the first half. Rejuvenated after the break following the introduction of Anderson, the Reds got a goal back through Dimitar Berbatov.

“It was a magnificent strike,” added the boss. “After that I thought, ‘we’re back’. I thought we were a certainty [to go on and win it]. The surge was there, the support was there, the momentum was there. Then we went and lost a really soft second goal. But credit to the players, they never give in. It’s a good quality to have. We’ve got something out of the game on a day when we’ve played really badly.”

Evra’s late intervention, therefore, was a huge relief. “There was a bit of luck attached to it, but it was a great strike from Patrice,” continued Sir Alex. “He got in the box and was prepared to have a crack.

“Of course, it could [have been a damaging defeat]. It’s always disappointing not to win your home games. We didn’t make a lot of chances in the game, and I didn’t think our quality in the final third was good enough to create chances. We have to say it was an off day. You get them sometimes, we don’t enjoy them but you do get them.”

We were lucky - Evra

QUOTE
Patrice Evra struck the late equaliser for United against Sunderland – albeit via a fortunate deflection off Anton Ferdinand – but he was far from happy when the final whistle went at Old Trafford.

It was a performance lacking in the vim and vigour that had seen United move to the top of the Barclays Premier League the week before with a 2-0 win over Stoke City. And Evra remains unsure whether United even deserved the point.

“It was a big disappointment because it was a poor display,” was the Frenchman’s honest assessment. “We are very disappointed about the way we played. It was a bad game. We drew, and one point is a bonus. We are pleased to get a point, but I don’t even know if we deserved it.

“We are very frustrated because it looked like we didn’t have any energy or power. It was a bad game for us. You have to say Sunderland played very well. We just didn’t look sharp. Our game was slow, we lost a lot of challenges and in the first half we were very poor.”

United made more of a fight of it after the break, as Berbatov started the half with a wonderful volleyed equaliser, and Evra finished it with a more fortunate leveller after Kenwyne Jones had again given Sunderland the lead.

“After Berbatov scored the team pushed on, but then Sunderland scored again,” said Evra. “It was difficult to come back again after that. We did manage to in the last few minutes. But it’s still not a good result for us.”

Such was Patrice’s disappointment, he isn’t even claiming the goal that rescued a point for United. “I just tried to strike it towards goal and it came off Anton Ferdinand. It was a good goal for us, but it’s an own goal. Next time I’ll make sure I score a proper goal!”

United have been uncharacteristically unsure in defence this season, notching up a third of the number of goals conceded as last season after only eight games.

“Yeah [we are worried about it],” said Patrice. “We have conceded a lot of goals and I’m not happy with that because I am a defender. If you want to win the league, I think you need to keep clean sheets. Last season we conceded 24 goals and we don’t want to concede more than that this season.”

Credits need to given to Brucey who got his tactics spot on. Both Cattermole & Cana run tirelessly closing down the space and forced our midfield to rush their passes.

As Evra said, the defense need to buck up as well. We conceded in 5 of the 8 games played so far [8 goals conceded = 1 per game] sweat.gif

We might want to try to get VDS fit during this international break to help steady the shaky ship in the defense. Reason? Our next game is against Bolton who is well known for their aerial bombardments during corners/freekicks.

I watched their game against Spurs yesterday and Spurs just couldn't cope with them especially Kevin Davies who is equally good as Jones [if not better] in terms of aerial ability.

To me some of MU players are overhyped. For example every simple pass that Scholes made is called brilliant and that he is a genius. If so why isn't he on the English team?
At his prime he was not a NOTABLE as far as I recall.
*
Why Scholes is not in the England team? That's because he retired from international football, just like Giggs?

If you referred to his performances during his time for England team, he was played out of position (LW IIRC?) which is NOT his natural position.
