Actually, contrary to popular belief, the PS3 is a fantastic BD player. Its processing speeds is almost unpararelled and due to the fact that most movie mastering houses use this as the defacto BD player, most titles will have no problems playing on the PS3. PS3s only achillees heel was that it had a noisy fan, was a power hogger and it did not bitstream the HD audio codecs.
With the release of the PS3 Slim, Sony fixed 2 out of the 3 main complaints. There is no way to bypass the fan issue, the processing power that the PS3 has really needs a good cooling system, hence the huge fan.
The PS3 has no issue with image processing (it handles DVD upscaling better than most DVD players out there) and is very very good at sending out a clean problem free HD video (very calibration friendly). Really, unless you need a better audio processing system (dedicated 2 channel audiochannel, multichannel analogue, SACD, DVD-A) I would suggest the new PS3 slim to anyone out there! Also it doubles up as a media player as well. Hard to beat.
If the fan noise does not annoy you, there is no reason to go for separates.
