hi guys.

my dell 1420 laptop's fan is not working anymore...... dunno why it just stop working suddenly, and automatically shut down my whole laptop without any notice sad.gif

last time also got this suddenly shut down problem, but the fan was still working (partially perhaps. sometimes can hear the fan 'boosting' sound)...

just now it shutted down again, and i could feel that its hotter than normal when i touched it... so i switched on again and noticed that the fan is no longer working...

haix~

just want to ask - roughly how much would it cost to repair and replace another fan? warranty finished d...

sorry cause im a noob here. smartass, please do not leave stupidly arrogant comments.

thanks.

you'll have to RMA it back to the manufacturer. Only they will be able to quote you a price. Most probably should be a few hundred ringgit i think. unless the CPU is damaged too then thats a totally different ball game.

p/s: dont worry about stupidly arrogant comments. this forum is well moderated.

woah! better not use that laptop for the time being! if it shuts down by itself it means one of the component is overheating (which in your case I think it's the processor, coz that's only component in most laptop that requires a fan) to protect itself from further heat damage, that's why u felt very hot before it shutdown. Like what bro Arturia said, u will need to send it back to dell for repair asap. if u can still turn on your laptop and run for a short while before it auto shutdown, it means that your procs is still alive. but if u keep using it, ur procs may get damaged due to repeated overheating. provided if your procs is still ok, the only component that needs replace is the fan and even the entire heatsink fan. which should cost around RM1XX or more. but no matter what, using a laptop with a dead fan is definitely a big NO NO.
fun fun ^_^

Hi, I'm new here in this lowyat forum. Nice to meet everyone.

I'm having similar problems as tonyqcc. My laptop is a 3 years++ Fujitsu S2110. Few months prior I noticed that my laptop seemed to make alot of noise but infrequently. After a few incidents the noise disappeared so I thought it was ok (I'm computer noobie).

But recently I noticed my laptop's fan failed to initialize during startup (like 7 out of 10 times). The message is something about fan error or something like that. However it can still run smoothly without much problem.

I'm thinking of changing the fan asap but I'm not sure which fan model is it and if it's available now, since my laptop is quite an old model. If anyone knows where I can get the parts and the price, please do let me know. I hope that my laptop will burn before I change the fan =)

Thanks.

As I mention in my post earlier, do return the notebook back to manufacturer. only they know exactly what fan can be used and fit in the chasis of your notebook. Please remember that changing anything yourself in a laptop is risky business and only should be done if you have adequate knowledge of the notebook itself. its not as easy as in desktop.

I agree to Arturia, you should send it back to the company(DELL) and let them quote you a price. If you think it is not worth of it then you might just purchase a new laptop. However, paying few hundreds is definitely cheaper than buying a new one. I personally think shop will not do this kind of repair to customer as they will encourage you to buy a new one instead. IMHO, I never seen shop selling neither laptop fan nor heatsink.

Well, for temporary solution, use a laptop cooler to cool it down as high temperature will kill the processor.

However, for warranty extension it is possible to do so but you have to bring it to Dell and let them quote you a price. They will observe the laptop condition and usually it is very expensive.

better still don't use the laptop. Even with a laptop cooler, its cooling a CPU with a small passive cooler (you notice all passive coolers for CPUs are BIG?). So take no chances else instead of paying a few hundred you'll end up with a few thousand (unless your intention is to get a new one smile.gif - then it makes no difference.)

thanks for all your (i mean ALL of you guys here biggrin.gif ) comments... the short term solutions now is that i use my laptop only in air-cond room... plus table fan blowing and a cooler-like aluminum table...

thats what i can do temporarily... contacted Dell online staff for warranty renewal thingy since MONTHS ago but no respond from them at all... not any instruction given... anyway, i heard that if i want to renew the warranty, i will first need to send it over for them to inspect, repair and 'certified' for warranty extension (my warranty been dead for one year i guess), which means i need to pay them the whole sum of inspection fees, repair cost (if any) plus the warranty purchase money huh?

i believe that will cost me at least rm1k haha... ><

thanks for all your comments again... rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

btw, that fan is moving again...... hmm.gif speechless~

tony...

p.s. well, i had such experiences of getting those stupid + arrogant comment, from a guy who commented lansi-ly for a noob question of mine... thats why im kinda worried (and frustrated i think) if such users would appear in this thread again... doh.gif

Just wondering are Acer laptop fan standard? Is it really true only the manufacturer has new fans for them? Computer shops never carry any laptop fans?

I've already open it up it's just a small low voltage amp.

Will post pic with model number.

Basically it hasn't been running for sometime, before the fan sounds very loud, yesterday i took it apart and cleaned it, then it started working again, start & stop but today it's not moving again.

I use speedfan the HDD showing 50C while Temp1 showing 90C.

depends on how old your laptop is also. using for 2-3 years might require service. what they will do is open up your laptop & clean the fan. the fan will be full with dust (if u use a lot & at dusty areas too). after cleaning all the dust your laptop fan might work & u can feel its better than before less heat.

its actually easy to clean the fan for some laptop models, my hp dv6 is more harder sad.gif . but of course better send to dell service center la if u dont dare to clean yourself. if its dust problem that stuck on the fan then service charge wont be that much la but if its fan malfunction then might cost you more. anyway like the other person suggested, its better not to use your laptop coz it can overheat without the fan working. the mobo is good coz it auto shutdown to prevent hardware damages but if it overheats & burn your processor or mobo then its gonna cost you a lot to repair it. better dont take the risk right brows.gif

if u got this kind of cooler then its better (coz it suck out air from the laptop processor exhaust) but still not advisable. http://www.topreviewshop.com/evercool_fit_notebook_cooler

edit: oh shit i just realised this is a freaking old thread....lol doh.gif (someone bump it)

advocado: looks like your fan is faulty/spoiling so i think its better to take it to the shop to repair

You can try disassemble your laptop partially to gain access to the laptop fan. Could be years of dust that is trapped and prevent the fan from spinning. Happened to my laptop once, found one big ball of dust blocking the fan blades, suck it out using vacuum cleaner, good as new. smile.gif

I have already cleaned the fan, it was working but only for a while. I can only clean the parts i have access, dust between the bearing etc are not reacheble without totally disassembling the fan.

It has small covers below for easy access now i just leave the cover open, but speedfan temp is still showing 92degC for the Temp01 & 45C for HDD, i'd assume there's no cooling for the HDD anyway.

Am thinking of getting those cheap usb fan but not sure if they are good for long term usage.

how did u clean it in the first place? perhaps u spoil the motor already? if u use vacuum to suck the dirt out then the motor might spin at a very fast rpm & the motor couldnt handle it thus u spoiled the motor. or could it be something is stuck?

check the link i posted...that should help a bit ( i m selling mine tongue.gif). but still, laptop with a non functioning fan is not good.

Any external form of cooling for a laptop does not really work..even so called notebook coolers are a gimmick and does not offer much cooling
If your fan is really dead there are many 2nd hand shops that salvage laptop parts at Lowyat Plaza..you can buy from them a replacement fan if necessary

yeah but that cooler is directly pointed to the laptop processor exhaust, so its sucking the hot air from there. but yeah u cant just depend on that....a processor fan is necessary .

Most laptops will intake from the bottom and exhaust from the side..you may blow towards the intake of the fan but there is no duct to direct the air to the CPU fan
If you can put your laptop on stilts maybe 1 inch tall without fan also it would work well if there is sufficient air flow from ceiling/stand fan in your room..
That is also the reason why using laptops on beds are not advised as you block the intake below from getting air hence overheating..
If advocado don't want to test the fan he can get a replacement for it..change thermal paste and do a thorough clean of the fins as well

i already cleaned most of the parts i can, including the exhaust ducts, when i try to push the fan both ways i can sense vibration or resistance where the fan bounce back.

anyway it'd be hard to find replacement since there's no standard fan models.

Not that hard to find a replacement if you know where to look..like I said that there are some of the shops that sells salvaged parts at Lowyat
Surely there will be a shop there that sells a laptop fan that is almost similar to yours..so your fan does not spin at all now?
