everybody... i need help.

i just bought a D5000 a week ago. my next purchase will be an external flash and a lens. i was thinking of 50mm 1.8 coz it's the cheapest and i'm looking for a lens with big aperture. the thing is, i just noticed that this lens is not a af-s lens and i will not be able to have auto focus. the af-s 50mm 1.4 is way too expensive...

now, my problem is, i notice that af-s lenses are at lease 2-3 times more expensive then af lenses... meaning that i have to fork out so much money if i wanted to pruchase lens. will it be better to buy a D90 instead? (at least i can save up on lenses) or just go canon? (nikon's 50mm 1.8 = RM380, canon 50mm 1.8 = RM340)

saw a shop in lowyat selling D90 packaged with kit lens and 70-300 lens at RM4800. just the 70-300 it self cost RM2000. Wish i have the money...

question:
what is cls? do we really use cls? planning to buy a flash. the guy at the store recon nissin or SB900 if i plan to use cls for my D5000.

For good bargain in KL ... u can try Kota Raya, there are 2 camera shop one after another, go to the second one / last shop, owner pretty nice and honest.
Or u can try Boeing at Sg Wang - not bad either.

I got my D5000 from Boeing - no need to rego, they straight offer lowest price possible.

how much? i bout mine at digital mall. RM2900 with 4G, bag, uv filter, screen protector, tripod. but i return the tripod and got a set of cleaning kit instead. i add a bit more to get a better uv filter

question about flash.

i can't affort SB900 for my D5000 at the moment. i understand that SB600 can't do cls on D5000. so since i can't do cls, should i go for nissin flash instead of SB600? at least i can save more for lens.

tararan: congrats on ur D5000.

i thought more bokeh means bigger apperture? if f5.6 meaning less bokeh compare to f3.5 right? normally what i'll do is use 18mm f3.5 and stand closer to the subject instead. pls correct me if i'm wrong

i always wanted a zoom lens with fix aperture. dun have to worry that the aperture size will change when u zomm in or out.

general:

hmm, what u said does make sense. i found a book title 'digital photography' says this about depth of field

there are 3 elements that control depth of field.

1) aperture : changing the size of the lens aperture radically alters the amount of the scene, from foreground to background, which is captured in focus

2) focal length of the lens : the longer the focal length, the narrower the depth of field

3)focusing distance: the closer the subject is to the lens the narrower the depth of field increases

i'm quite confused in 2) and 3). is focal length of the lens meaning zoom in and out where focusing distance is how close the distance between u and the subject? let's say, i have a wide aperture and should i zoom in for more bokeh or should i move closer to the subject? as i know, u can't do both right? err, can anyone help?

totally agreed with you, i see alot of photog nowdays are more like collector if their wallet is loaded with creditcards or cash. See no reason to upgrade a body just for a lens, not like u getting so many lens. Why upgrade for the sakes of getting af-s lens?? Do u know pro's still prefer to use manual focus? study those manual lens price, it was made to be manual and expensive. 50mm f1.8 is one of the main cause of people upgrading because its cheap, its a 1:1 prime fixed 1.8 max aper, manual focus is easy and better for portrait and macro man, i google it, i try it and i believe in it. Manual focus is the real skill.

All Kuala lumpur driver nowdays all no skill driving auto only, AUTO how to do drift after watch Initial D wo  rclxm9.gif

Technology was not design to make human more sufficient i guess if u guys watch that movie name '' surogates''
*
finally found someone who is thinking the same way as i did. so u must be good in manual focus. any tips? i plan to buy a 50mm 1.8 to go along with my d5000 but i'm afraid that i will take a lot of time manual focusing etc. if i can't manual focus fast enuf, i might as well fork out more to go for 35mm 1.8 instead. at least i can af when i'm shooting and manual focus when i'm practising.

can someone tell me the scientific prupose of a dry box? it keeps our lens and dslr dry? anyone here got a drybox? where can i get it and how much?

Added on October 19, 2009, 5:51 pmscreen protector for d5000 is 2.7" priced at RM25. i got mine for free when i purchase my dslr but i accidently 'ter' tear it off from my screen and i can't manage to stick it back. so i bought a new one at RM25

what makes a flash overheat? what happens when it overheat? what do we do when it overheat? turn it off? and how long do we need to wait? man... i'm really new in external flash

nissin di866, what is the faulty thing that needs to upgrade using software or things like that. what happen?

Added on October 20, 2009, 3:59 amabout filter, why do we need uv filter? some site was saying that it protects the lens. do we need to buy a filter for each and every lens that we have?

and some say...if want to take marco pic..we need to take out the filter..
correct huh?

well, dun care whether it's a waste of money or what, it's worth buying to protect the lens. we wont know what's gonna happen. "better prevent then cure" right?

basically when you fire a lot, the batteries get overheat. when the batteries overheat, its best to cool it down. depends on the quality, some batteries can even explode if it overheats. when your set of batteries overheat, its best if you take it off until it cools down.

can't help with ur nissin problem
i dont have a nissin yet. planning to buy but heard someone was saying something about it in the previous page. so just a bit curious.. hmm.gif

nah insurance is bull sHit, its an expensive hobby , learn how to take care of your stuff. A very good business tactics, imagine how much fotokem made from u guys.

if a nikon wanna show the problem, it will show in less than 1 year, i meant real technical problems.
You know lah when u buy medical insurances, this and that = all can but when u reach hospital, this can but this cannot and this maybe can and this sure cannot LOL vmad.gif
*
sorry, a bit out of topic. u can only blame ur insurace agent for not telling u what can and what cant when it comes to claim. as for extended warranty, i dont have it but for those who've got it, it's a peace of mind. at least for 2 years, and yeah, they do earn a lot from there.

Di866 uses wireless trigger, IR or other tech im not sure
Di622 can CLS too, but detects camera built-in flash or main flash for trigger

Added on October 20, 2009, 7:05 pm

18-200 is expensive rite?  sweat.gif
i only say normally expensive or special purpose lenses have both type of VR

can u help me in deciding which flash to buy? i'm getting more confused now. i want a budget flash. i dont know how to cls now but i would like to learn it some day. so if possible, i want something that can work as a commander for my d5000. since i dont have budget right now, should i just go for di622 for now and get another di866 when i can afford? (i can make di866 as master and di622 as slave) or just save all the way for sb900? (as i am worried about the problems regarding cls in di866). HELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP

Added on October 21, 2009, 3:26 amone more question:

which one gives more bokeh?

1) a prime lens 50mm set to a big aperture at 1.4 or
2) a telephoto lens zoom at 200mm aperture 5.6

i just wanted to know if i want great bokeh/DoF, which should i prioritize 1st? aperture or focal length? and if i have both 50mm 1.4 and 70-200mm 3.5-5.6 lenses, which ones should i use in order to get the greatest DoF? thanks a lot...

thanks guys. i think i know what lens and flash i should buy now. as in for 50mm 1.8, i love it very much but i can't auto focus. i'll prefer 35mm 1.8 coz i can AF and practise manual focus at the same time. once i'm good at manual focus, i can consider 50mm 1.8.

what's ur favourite mode?

mine is M, and followed by A and S. never really use auto often. just doesn't feel satisfied using auto mode. i will use auto when i'm in a situation whereby i need to shoot something quick. don't have the time to adjust aperture etc.

guys..for manual mode

if i want to take outdoor pic in sunny day

how to avoid the face from become dark?

without flash is it possible? because when use flash(built in).u  the skin will look oily.

increase iso? or play around with aperture? lol
ps: i'm newbie
*
well, i had the same problem too. then i go round asking ppl and do some reading. u need external flash or reflector. if the sun is on the head, put the reflector under the face. u can check this month's DCM (igital camera magazine). they gave pretty good tips on how to take pics outdoor.

check this out. the difference in 50mm and 35mm lens. let's say my next target would be either af-s 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8. the difference between 35mm and 50mm is so much. is it advicable to go 50mm instead eventhough i can't af.
