Just switched from MCR r5 to VillainROM 12.0.0. Everything feels faster now, except the lock screen.

Official update has no FriendStream. VillainROM has though.

Are you connected to the internet via WiFi or Mobile network?
Try changing the date, disconnecting, and reconnecting again.

Try disconnecting before changing the date, and reconnecting after.

I tried on my Nandroid backup of SIS 1.5 just now and got the OTA update message immediately when I connected to WiFi. I cancelled and change the date, disconnect, reconnect and got it again. But I didn't apply the update because I using AmonRA recovery image.

If WiFi doesn't work, maybe try Mobile network? Sometimes some ports on a router can be blocked.

Haha yeah I missed my W995 when I sold it off too... that's why I bought it again.
Anyway, I think I'd choose the Nexus One because it's probably going to be the first phone that will get Android 3.0 Gingerbread later this year.

I don't think VillainROM 12 comes with HTC_CIME since it's based on the European 2.1 ROM. So it won't appear as an input method.

If your phone is rooted or has a custom recovery image like AmonRa, you cannot get the OTA 2.1 update. Unless you revert back to unrooted ROM and original recovery image.

You can go back to original recovery image if you had created a backup of the original recovery image. If you used the FlashRec application to flash AmonRa, you should have created a backup recovery image (e.g. recovery-backup.img) so you can flash back the original image.

It's very easy to flash a custom ROM if you have the AmonRa recovery image installed.

A. Get ROM
1) Dowload your ROM. My recommendations:

2) Copy it to your SDCard's top folder (i.e. /sdcard/)

B. Launch AmonRA Recovery Image
1) Power off your phone.
2) Turn it on by holding both the Home and Power buttons and keep holding until you see the AmonRa recovery application:


C. Backup Your Current ROM (Optional but HIGHLY Recommended)
1) Select Backup/Restore -> Nand backup.
2) Press Home button to confirm.

D. Wipe Existing Data (Optional but HIGHLY Recommend)
1) Select Wipe -> Wipe data/factory reset. Home button confirms.
2) Select Wipe -> Wipe Dalvik-cache. Home button confirms.

E. Flash Your New ROM
1) Select Flash zip from sdcard
2) Select your ROM to flash. Press Home to confirm.

If something goes wrong, you can always revert to your ROM as long as you created a backup (Part C).
1) Select Backup/Restore -> Nand restore
2) Choose your Device and then the backup you made.
3) Press Home to confirm restoration of your ROM.

The Dalvik cache contains the optimized version of your applications (.apk) files. They're created only once for each application installation.

Sometimes if you don't wipe the cache after installing a new ROM, some applications may not work properly and crash. I don't really know the reason why, but I think it may be because of inconsistency in the Dalvik cache.

Just downloaded and tried the Digital Clock Widget and Weather Widget. Very nice.
