I think the reason they want math as a requirement is that math can indirectly show your intelligence level... As my add math teacher always said, the reason they include add math in secondary school is to develop the analytical and thinking skills of a student... And from my experience, students who excel in math is able to understand scientific concepts better than the one who doesn't, some can even memorise better, though I cannot see the connection between memorising and math...
