i got my pc almost 3 yrs ago and now its full of dust. normally ppl will take all the component inside one by one clean it thoroughly. however, i dun wish to take out all the component as some ppl said "before you take out all the component for cleaning, the pc works perfectly fine, but after u take out all component and clean it and put back inside chasis, the pc got problem like slow on turning on, cannot start, performance slow...etc...or any similar problem". So, in order to prevent this and din want to take the risk, can anyone suggest alternative solution to remove the dust inside chasis without taking out the component?

Solution that i can think of:
1-> use blower(not sure the name is correct or not)
2-> send to shops or any services that provide cleaning (preferably not to choose this option)
3-> get suggestions from this thread from ppl that have experienced/tried to clean the chasis without taking out the component.

You want spot-less cleanliness, you have to take it out...
Take them out and just dust and wipe..simple..if scared about wires, put some tape and name them..
Its a simple job..dun b scared of your machine..your r the boss..

Added on August 30, 2009, 1:35 pmyes, i'm the boss of my own machine, but human tend to do mistakes and sometimes we dun even know we have done mistakes until its too late.
still, i dun take the risk, if my machine broke down, i'm doom. cant do assignment and lab sheet., cant study also.
the main reason i want to clean it, or can say reduce the amount of dust inside chasis is because my GC always hang due to high temp.
when i first bought the GC (Gecube 3870 xt3), the normal load temp is 54-57 Celsius. now it has gone UP to 56-60 in NORMAL load!!!
i was thinking about getting galaxy tri fan artic cool GC but no budget,so i choose to clean/reduce the amount of dust inside the chasis.

my chasis got two 80mm fan sucking air, two 50mm fan blowing the hot air out, plus gigantic fan inside CM 650 extreme power to blow the hot air out.
could it be the PSU that caused heat inside my chasis too?beside dust?

one extremely noticeable thing is after i use this PSU, the room where i put my pc tend to get hot fast and easy.

But I know you can get it at Ace Hardware in Midvalley around 40 bucks

i normally recommend taking everything apart..
wiping everything away with a clean towel
then use compressed air
and use soft brush for casing + compress air
and alcohol+ear buds + compress air for mobo/gc's
hdd use anti static clothe.
ram.. compress air only

use 2 time already turned yucky color, more cheaper than compressed air

don't simply use any type of brush.. you may kick up some static while you brush the surface of your internals.

I use blower and brush. Those blower then u usually can get from big camera shop, use by those camera enthusiast to clean their camera. But, I got mine at Digital Mall, Sec 17 PJ, cost me less than RM30. Brush, I just get those school watercolour brush.

BTW, confession, I am beginner at IT , therefore, dont dare to remove out any hardware to clean one by one, scared spoilt, so, just remove the casing, use blower to blow, if use mouth, scared sliver drop in, computer kena H1N1, die off.

Very useful to clean stuff, its kinda like clay, where u just press it on da stuff u wanna clean, it'll mold itself to the shape of the stuff, and all the dust will get stuck on it.

if you're worried about staticcharges, get an anti-static brush (normally black color) from electrical shops from pasar road.

seam that cyber clean is the best option at the moment..
but for the hsf, u still need to remove the fan 1st right???

But the CyberClean is wet wet de.... Only can use to clean your K/B, Mouse, HP or your casing (exterior). If you put it on your GPU or Mobo or HDD, "gg.com" edi

Well, if u use the CyberClean for a uber dusty area (like a 3 years dust-rich hsf), then sure its a waste coz u will see all the dirt and grease stick to it and making it less reusable. CyberClean just suit for cleaning those small small unreachable place like keyboard IMHO.

Just take everything out, use brush/cotton bud/air compressed can, reapply ur thermal paste (find a good one like Tuniq TX-3 or AC MX-2), change some fan, do some cable management and take a good bath together with ur casing.

If u do everything in order, there shouldn't be problem like unable to turn on etc. If not enough knowledge, then this is a good time to learn as well.

Furthermore, this will strengthen the relationship between u and ur CPU. Ok, this one is irrelevant

Added on September 6, 2009, 4:48 ami got one precious info/experience for anyone who uses compressed air can. u have to keep a distance when u spray as the compressed air is in liquid form.
if u put too close, the air still is liquid, but if u put too far, the air doesnt has enuf force to clean the dust.
i get this info from a fren and i think its quite important.

addition, u guys know how to add air into motor/car tires rite?i was thinking about using that(the air that comes out of the machine to pump tire) to clean the dust. however, fast moving air also means static charges.
static charges mean damage to ur mobo chipset or any chipset that can easily get broken by small electric current.
the compressed air can doesnt create static charges (according to what my fren said), i duno about that as i havnt use it yet.

Well bro, unless u doing some psu cable sleeving, lapping hsf, playing water cooling or any modding, hardly things will go wrong.

and for ur idea in using the compressed air in auto shop, i afraid the pressure is too high. I've seen people using them for cleaning engine throttle-body and the pressure is a blast , which i think might just kill ur mobo. No idea though coz never try but would stay away

For me, i just use the anti static brush that is provided in LCD cleaning kit, works flawlessly. So far, being cleaning all the pc with it and nothing went wrong.

+ Don't bother cleaning ur casing fan if its RM5 cap ayam coz its troublesome, great noise maker and their life is at the edge. According to my own preferences : just replace it with a better fan like Xigmatek for budget or Scythe for performance. Noctua is good if u can find any. Cooler Master, Vantec, Silverstone fans just dont work for me

Why not spend a bit more on a good case with air filters out side? You just need to clean the filter instead on the components inside. Of course you need to rip them out apart & perform a thorough cleaning initially, but ultimately on the long run, you won't need to touch the component inside.

but still, i think i better clean my chasis when i take my whole pc set back home.at home, its more convenient, got more tools, budget higher(parent's atm, haha), and most importantly wont influenced my study.

i wana clean those parts too.
the longer u din clean ur chasis, the more obviuos u'll see dust at those edges.

Final advise.... Spend a "little time" & a "little love" to your RIG

i use a industrial air compressor. not too big one like in car workshops, but just a mid range one.
strong enough to clean everything. even the fans are clean. heatsinks as clean as new, dust in between components in mobo all gone.

not sure abt the horsepower or air strengh though.

in ur opinion(anyone), between sucking air into chasis is and pulling the air out, which one is better in term of cooling and minimization of dust collection inside chasis.

I think a combination of Compressed Can Air and Vaccum Cleaner.. Turn on the vacuum while spaying around so that the dust blown up will immediately get sucked in..

if can air could not be found.. get those pumps used to clean camera lens or alike...

the vacuum u saying is the big one like household use one?

Just go to any bike workshop and ask to borrow the compressor and blower... 1 blow into whole case can clean it out edi... =)

the pressure of blower at the bike shop is very high. All those static electricity generated from moving air sure will damage ur device before ot does the cleaning job.

Yup been using like this for years now also no problem. Just make sure you ground the rig properly. After the combination of compressed can air and vacuum cleaner, just use the anti-static brush.

hair dryer can, but suitable if the dust is TOO THICK. it can't remove all the dust, but then can use brush to remove. useful for area like fan, HDD, DVD slot, but not good for HSF. the metal will become too hot to touch.

or u can go to camera @ usual supermarket like Giant and Carrefour, search for DSLR cleaning kit. there's a blower, not as good as compressed air, but useful enough. not more than RM30 i think.

search for set of watercolour brush flat head, cheap one enough, around RM 3-5.

one advice...

google more how to deassemble and reassemble PC hardware coz when u don't remove the component, u will not learn, and the dust will not remove completely. there's a hefty price for learning this, me myself already blow 1 PSU, damage 1 GC, 2 mobo, 1 proc. mostly my own hardware plus my friend's. sounds scary but once you know the knowledge, you will see yourself how useful it can do for u.

Some of the hardware need to be removed for cleaning & some don't...
Just use paint brush & air blower will do...

fyi, i got the knowledge of assemble and reassemble pc hardware. i even help me frens assemble their pc.
just that i cant afford trouble now from my pc. trouble like pc broke down, replacing component if any component broke down...

i can choose neither normal air or hot air...
and also fast air flow or slow air flow...
so...i juz used the normal air aka cool air and fast air flow....
juz turn it on...booooooooooooooooooooooo
all dust out of my chassis....

and my hsf is clean enuf not many dust...
im using C2D E7400 the fan spins very slow...
my GC too....
