Park Agrees to New Deal With Man U

QUOTE
South Korea's Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung has agreed to a three-year new contract with the English Premier League team, Yonhap News Agency reported Monday.

The contract is to expire on June 30 2012. The amount of the deal was not revealed under an agreement between the two sides but Yonhap estimated Park's annual salary at about 3.6 million pounds (7.3 billion won), up 30 percent from 2.8 million pounds at present.

Park, 28, is one of key players in Manchester, netting two goals and scoring two assists by playing in 25 games of the team's 38 games in the 2008-09 regular season. He became the first Asian player ever to play in the Champions League final when he was a member of his team in a match against FC Barcelona of Spain.

A Myongji University graduate, Park signed his first professional contract with J-League's Kyoto Purple Sanga in 2000 for 400 million won and his value has steadily improved since then. He drew attention after playing on the right wing under Guus Hiddink during the 2002 World Cup. He went on to play for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven under Hiddink for 840 million won.

After helping the team reach the semifinals of the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League, Park caught the eye of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. He signed with the English club for 2 million pounds in 2005 and his salary has increased every year.

The other three games against Bolton Wanderers, Leeds United and Aston Villa were all draws.

Besiktas have lost five of their last seven Champions League games, all without scoring.

United have not lost any of their Champions League away games since falling 3-0 to Milan in the 2007 semi-finals.

They have won six and drawn six.

United have failed to score on three of four previous visits to the Turkish capital and lost 3-0 to Fenerbahce on their last trip in the Champions League five seasons ago.

Manchester United Defender Rio Ferdinand Doubtful For City Clash - Report

QUOTE
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is facing a race against time to be fit for the derby against Manchester City on Sunday, after missing the 1-0 Champions League win over Besiktas in Istanbul.

Ferdinand had only just returned to first-team action from a calf injury, playing his first match of the season in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said the England defender strained his groin in training following the Spurs match and was unable to make the bench for the Red Devils’ opening Champions League encounter, and that it was uncertain whether he would be back in time for the derby.

"We'll have to wait and see [whether Ferdinand will play against City]," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"He felt his groin in training after the game on Saturday and it wasn't worth the risk [playing him against Besiktas].

"He couldn't even make the bench, so we'll just have to give him time for Sunday."

If Ferdinand is unable to play on Sunday, Jonathan Evans is likely to continue to deputise. The young Northern Ireland international was again solid against Besiktas alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of the United defence.

Silva: United move would be a golden opportunity

QUOTE
Valencia and Spain star David Silva has given fresh momentum to reports linking him with a transfer to Manchester United by claiming that a move to England would be "hard to resist".

Silva was a key member of the Spain side that won Euro 2008.

Silva, 23, was reported to be a target for both United and Liverpool over the summer but surprisingly stayed at Valencia, along with David Villa, despite the Spanish club's crippling financial problems.

The winger has started the new season in impressive form, scoring the opening goal in Valencia's 4-2 win over Valladolid on September 13, and it is believed that Sir Alex Ferguson remains an admirer of the Euro 2008 winner.

While Silva is committed to Valencia at present, he has hinted that the chance to move to Old Trafford would hold a strong appeal in the future.

"It's an honour for any player that a club of the prestige of Manchester United should follow them and that in itself is enormous praise," Silva said in the Daily Mirror.

"I am committed to Valencia and my dream is to win the title but in the future anything is possible. Valencia have rejected offers for me in the past few months and I am happy here. But I also know that the Premier League is a big competition and hard to resist."

Just curious,,Lucas Neill joins Everton yesterday,,since the transfer window is closed, how could Everton sign players? Is it because his contract with West Ham has expired ?

Police probe City star Craig Bellamy's fan 'slap' after fiery Manchester derby

QUOTE
Police are investigating Craig Bellamy's confrontation with a fan during the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

The City striker marched towards the man, who had invaded the pitch, and shoved him in the face before the fan was led away by match stewards.

Neither the fan nor the Wales international have made a complaint to police about the clash.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "At the end of the derby between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, a member of the public ran on to the pitch, and was detained by police and security staff.

"During this time, there was an altercation between the man and a player from Manchester City FC.

"No formal complaint has been made by either party but police are continuing to make inquiries."

Following the Premier League match, City boss Mark Hughes said it was "not acceptable" for the fan to invade the playing area.

"I seem to recall Brian Clough clipping someone around the ear, and he was lauded as a national hero," said Hughes. "Maybe it will be the same case with Craig - but I doubt it.

"I'm sure people will make a nuisance about it, but the guy should not have been on the pitch. That is not acceptable."

Greater Manchester Police will also investigate a coin-throwing attack on City substitute Javier Garrido, who was struck as he headed down the tunnel at half-time.

The missile was launched from the home section of the crowd as Garrido walked alongside the probable intended target, Carlos Tevez, who was jeered throughout by United fans following his transfer from the home team in the summer.

Police said there were no reports of any widespread disorder between fans at either the ground or in the city centre.

Twelve people were arrested at the ground for a variety of public order offences and a further 10 were arrested in the city.

A total of 51 supporters were ejected from Old Trafford during the match, which was won 4-3 by United.

Evra: I Told Tevez We Weren’t Friends On The Pitch

QUOTE
Patrice Evra, Park Ji-Sung and Carlos Tevez were inseparable at United which made it difficult for Evra to hear the Argie booed constantly throughout our victory on Sunday.

“Carlos Tevez is a blue, he hates Munichs!” the City fans chanted after Tevez saw a shot come back off the woodwork.

At half time, Tevez and Evra walked off the pitch today and as they approached the tunnel, Carlos applauded the fans in the Stretford End, who returned his gesture with a load of abuse.

After jokingly claiming that he would boo with the fans before the game, Evra admits it wasn’t nice to hear one of his mates booed like that.

“It was a little bit difficult, because Carlitos is a good friend,” Evra said. “I called him before the game and said: ‘I don’t care, when you arrive at Old Trafford we are not friends on the pitch.’ But off the pitch, he is one of my best friends from my time playing at United. This is why I was with him at half-time. It was hard when the fans booed him. I understand that he played here and then he joined City, but he is still one of my best friends.”

Owen, Solskjaer and the Top 10 last-gasp United goals

QUOTE
Michael Owen's breathtaking 96th-minute winner for United in the Manchester derby on Sunday has resurrected all those faithful old lines about "Fergie time" and "dodgy stopwatches".

But the fact remains that Manchester United do have a supernatural ability to score the most important goals when the clock is against them.

The question is, where does Owen's amazing winner rank in the Old Trafford hall of fame of last-gasp goals? MirrorFootball presents the definitive top 10…

10) Nemanja Vidic v Sunderland (December 2008)
The Serbian defender rescued United from an embarrassing draw against 18th-placed Sunderland with a 91st-minute winner at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick's deflected shot had hit the woodwork, and Vidic was the first to react.

9) Cristiano Ronaldo v Sporting Lisbon (November 2007)
Sir Alex Ferguson likened Ronaldo to Eric Cantona after he scored a breathtaking free-kick in the 92nd minute of this Champions League clash. The Portuguese showpony netted from 30 yards out against his old club to seal top spot in the group.

8) Eric Cantona v QPR (March 1996)
The enfant terrible of Old Trafford netted in the third minute of injury time to send Fergie's men to the top of the Premier League. United had been trailing to a Denis Irwin OG, until Cantona headed home a cross from Ryan Giggs.

7) Ryan Giggs v Juventus (April 1999)
United's dreams of Champions League glory looked to be fading away, with United trailing 1-0 at home to Juve in the first leg of the quarter-finals. But in injury time, Ryan Giggs lashed home a close-range effort to give them a lifeline

6) Rio Ferdinand v Liverpool (January 2006)
It looked as if Liverpool had earned a precious point at Old Trafford, and might have had three if Djibril Cisse hadn't missed an open goal. But in the 90th minute, up popped Rio to power a header past Pepe Reina to steal it for United.

5) Mark Hughes v Oldham (April 1994)
Now he's on the receiving end, but once upon a time it was Sparky who broke hearts with last-gasp goals for United. Like this spectacular volley to equalise against Oldham in the last minute of extra time of the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

4) Federico Macheda v Aston Villa (April 2009)
Few had heard of Federico Macheda outside of Old Trafford before this afternoon, but the 17-year-old Italian made his name when he came off the bench to score a brilliant winner in the second minute of injury time and breathe new life into United's title bid.

3) Michael Owen v Manchester City (September 2009)
Owen had scored more than his share of memorable goals in the red shirt of Liverpool, but few quite as dramatic as his winner for United against bitter rivals City in the sixth minute of stoppage time, after City had thought they'd pulled off an unlikely draw with a 90th-minute equaliser.

2) Steve Bruce v Sheffield Wednesday (April 1993)
It was the goal that had Brian Kidd dancing on the Old Trafford turf. United had been trailing to a John Sheridan penalty, before Bruce netted an equaliser on 86 minutes. Then, deep into injury time, it was Bruce again who sealed all three points with a priceless header.

1) Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer v Bayern Munich (May 1999)
United claimed the Champions League in unbelievable fashion, scoring twice in injury time to cancel out Mario Basler's sixth-minute strike for the Germans. Sheringham lashed home an equaliser in the 91st minute, before the Norwegian poked the ball into the roof of the net to seal victory in the third minute of stoppage time.

United youngsters get chance to impress

QUOTE
Manchester United kick off their League Cup campaign against Wolves on Wedneday with exciting young strikers Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda desperate to press their case for regular first team football.

Sir Alex Ferguson has traditionally used the tournament as an opportunity to give his most promising young players opportunities to impress and a combination of starlets and fringe players carried United to last year's final.

Darron Gibson was a regular in cup competitions for United last season and is again set to step into Ferguson's team, while Michael Carrick, who has not been a regular this term, could also be given a run out.

Gary Neville is expected to step up his return from a groin problem and Richie De Laet, Jonny Evans and Fabio could all get a chance at the back, but it is Ferguson's attackers that are likely to grab the interest.

Neither Welbeck or Macheda, who both made an impression last season, have featured in the current campaign.

But at least one of the young strikers should start on Wednesday, possibly along with Michael Owen, who is short of match fitness despite coming on to score a dramatic winner in the 4-3 victory over Manchester City on Sunday.

There is also the prospect of Serbian winger Zoran Tosic being given the chance to show what he can do in English football.

Ferguson played veteran Ryan Giggs on the left against City and has been impressed with Nani's contribution but that spot is the most uncertain in the United team.

The Scot rates Tosic highly but the former Partizan Belgrade player, 22, has made just three substitute appearances and could be given the opportunity to shine against McCarthy's side.

While Ferguson would lose no sleep over not winning the competition, it does influence his thinking on players coming through the ranks and his future squad plans.

Two years ago, United suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat to Coventry and the likes of Phil Bardsley, Lee Martin, Gerard Pique, Chris Eagles and Danny Simpson have all found themselves moved on.

But Ferguson has been encouraged by the breakthrough of his most recent crop of youngsters and claims their emergence has meant he was able to limit his transfer activity during the summer.

He said: "We have the nucleus of last season's title winning team which I believe can kick on to become better as they mature and as younger players, such as Nani, Anderson, the da Silvas (Fabio and Raphael) and Jonny Evans, develop.

"Nobody should have been surprised that the transfer window shut without any further activity from Manchester United.

"I said that I was satisfied with my squad and the couple of signings I did make, I saw no reason to change my attitude, even if the vultures had home in following the blip at Burnley. All we need now is some consistency."

Wolves striker Kevin Doyle insists Mick McCarthy's side will travel to Old Trafford with no fear.

Wolves are riding high after beating Fulham 2-1 on Sunday and, having also won at Wigan this season, Doyle sees no reason why they can not pull off a shock.

He said: "We need to keep grounded and keep working as hard as we did against Fulham.

"If we do that, we feel we can go anywhere and get a result. Myself and all the lads feel like that so we won't be worried going away from home.

"We've already won away from home this season, so why not win away from home again?"

Doyle opened his Wolves account with a header against Fulham and McCarthy is expecting him to quickly add to his tally.

"He's a Premier League striker and a Premier League goalscorer," said the manager. "It is great for him to get his first goal and that will help his confidence - not that he lacks self-belief."

united unlikely to face deal sanction as fifa say 'no foul'

QUOTE

The chances of Manchester United facing FIFA sanctions over the transfer of Italy's U-16 captain Michele Fornasier to Old Trafford from Fiorentina receded further last night as FIFA indicated that action was not appropriate on the basis of the documentation the Italian club had provided.

Fiorentina, who, under Italian rules, are unable to sign players until their 16th birthday, have been infuriated by the player's move, which saw Alex Ferguson's United capitalising on the same contractual loophole which also enabled them to sign Federico Macheda from Lazio two

years ago. Sources in Italy had suggested that the contractual positions of its young players were incomparable with those in France, where the move of Gael Kakuta from Lens to Chelsea has prompted a transfer window ban to be imposed by FIFA.

A FIFA spokesman said: "We can confirm that we were contacted by Fiorentina with regard to the potential transfer of Michele Fornasier, to Manchester United. (But) no formal investigation was opened, since the documentation is not apt to sustain such action."
