QUOTE(sixseven @ Nov 25 2009, 11:13 PM) the sizing is similiar but not really the same.i believe that the current season's jerseys are slightly looser fitting as compared to last season's. so if last season's one was abit loose fitting for you, maybe this season u can consider dropping down a size. of course the safest way would be just to go to the shop and try it out |

This guide is intended for newbies who want to take the risk of applying themselves the PU namesets...
Before I proceed with this guide, please bare in mind the risks of doing it... it is up to you and if you decide to take the risk, good luck... But if you screw up, I won't be held responsible........ Of course, the best way to apply a PU nameset is to send it to the local store who has the bulky printing machine and ask them to iron press for you. They will charge you if you do it locally, but what if you don't have the luxury of having the option to go for the bulky printing machine? People like wongkwp, pyroboy1911 who lives abroad (at US and Australia respectively) and has no option but to DIY apply it themselves. Again before you proceed.. please ensure that the PU nameset is new and not too old (more than 3-4 years) because if it's too old, there is a risk that the PU nameset's glue has almost expired and it will be a pain in the ass to apply it yourself. Even if you use the heat press printing machine, it might still be tedious and disastrous.... There are also cases when they couldn't peel off the old PU nameset's plastic film from the applied nameset... So bare in mind the age of the PU nameset first before you apply it. I had been planning to do this all along........... so when I had the chance to do it, I took the risk. Tools to be used: masking tape, set square rulers, a plain cloth (I used my wife's tudung or veil), iron and ironing board So we will start printing the name of the player first, then we print the number of the player. Part 1: Applying the name 1. Before you proceed, iron your jersey first to ensure that the surface is smooth and not crumpled.. First, align the name of the player accordingly. Then put some masking tape so that the name doesn't move from it's intended aligned position on the jersey: ![]() Arrange and align the name of the player and then place some masking tape 2. Move the jersey on top of your ironing board. Then cover it with a plain cloth: ![]() Cover the nameset with a plain cloth 3. Set your iron to 2 or 2.5 dots (medium heat). You can try setting it to 3 dots since we use a plain cloth to cover the nameset, I used 3 dots... But to be safe, use 2 dots. Then iron press firmly for 5 seconds on top of the nameset that is covered with the cloth. But please be careful not to iron on top of the masking tape. This is why you should use a plain white cloth that is transparent: ![]() Iron press the nameset with the plain cloth to protect your jersey. Don't iron on the masking tape! For PU namesets, a good amount of pressure and heat is really essential. Without the plain cloth, if you do it directly, you risk of ruining the jersey's surface and leave an ugly mark on top of it.. trust me, it's best to have the plain cloth to protect it.. 4. Then, remove the plain cloth and remove the masking tape... At this moment, don't peel off the nameset's plastic film yet: ![]() Peel off the masking tape... 5. After removing the masking tape (only), cover back the nameset with the plain cloth and iron press firmly again (5 seconds). When ironing, you can slightly press it... Remember, pressure+heat is vital for PU namesets. This time, with no masking tape, you can freely iron it with no worries of accidentally ironing the masking tape: ![]() Iron press firmly the nameset again with the plain cloth 6. Once you've covered all the areas on ironing the nameset, remove the plain cloth. Then, fan or flap your jersey so that you help remove the heat from the previous ironing: ![]() Flap or fan your jersey to remove the heat from previous ironing * Bare in mind, this should be done IF the nameset is cold peel. Most nameset nowadays are cold peel, where the PU nameset must be cold and then only you can peel off the plastic film. There are some rare namesets that are hot peel (example, some of Real Madrid's nameset). If it's hot peel, after you've iron the nameset, you must peel off the film straight away while it's hot (skip the step of fanning or flapping your jersey to remove the heat). So if you buy the nameset from an ebay seller for example, it's best to check if the nameset is hot or cold peel. But most are cold peel nowadays... 7. Since the nameset I'm applying here is cold peel, I have to ensure it's already cold before I can peel off the plastic film. Use your hands to feel the nameset's film and ensure that it is cold before you start peeling it off: ![]() Feel the plastic film first before you peel it.. 8. You can physically look at the plastic film of the nameset and see that there is some gap surrounding the letters outline as shown below: ![]() You can see the gap around the letter's outline This is another indicator that the nameset has bonded on the jersey's surface. 9. This is the tricky part.... Gently, carefully, patiently, slowly... peel off the plastic film: ![]() Carefully.. peel off the plastic film *To peel off the film, one good tip from jerseyman is to start from the sharp edges or corners of the letters.. Make that your starting point when you want to peel off the film..... 10. Finally if you suceed peeling off the plastic film, the nameset should have already bonded on to the jersey's surface: ![]() Part 1 completed... But the nameset is not 100% bonded yet.. Why? Jerseyman will explain later.. To be continued....... This post has been edited by schmeichel7: Nov 26 2009, 11:27 AM |

Continued..
Now let's move the 2nd part of this activity.... Part 2: Applying the number 1. First, align the number of the player accordingly. Use the previously applied name as your guide of reference: ![]() Align and arrange the numbers on top of the jersey As shown above, jerseyman used his set square rulers as a guide to ensure that the numbers are aligned and positioned correctly.... 2. Then put some masking tape so that the numbers doesn't move from it's intended aligned position on the jersey: ![]() Place some masking tape on the plastic film to ensure it doesn't move The placement of the masking tape is up to you to choose.. As long as the nameset that you've arranged previously doesn't move from it's intended position. The placement is important to ensure that it is easy for you to iron on it later (don't put too many masking tapes or else it will be harder to avoid when ironing for the first time). 3. Move the jersey to the ironing board: ![]() Ready to be ironed! 4. Then cover it with a plain cloth: ![]() Cover the nameset with a plain cloth 5. Iron press firmly for 5 seconds on top of the nameset that is covered with the cloth. But please be careful not to iron on top of the masking tape. This is why you should use a plain white cloth that is transparent: ![]() Iron press the nameset with the plain cloth to protect your jersey. Don't iron on the masking tape! 6. Then, remove the plain cloth and peel off the masking tape... At this moment, don't peel off the nameset's plastic film yet, only the masking tape: ![]() Peel off the masking tape only 7. After removing the masking tape (only), cover back the nameset with the plain cloth and iron press firmly again (5 seconds) : ![]() Iron press firmly the nameset again with the plain cloth 8. Once you've covered all the areas on ironing the nameset, remove the plain cloth. Then, fan or flap your jersey so that you help remove the heat from the previous ironing (since this is a cold peel type PU nameset): ![]() Flap or fan your jersey to remove the heat from previous ironing 9. Again... since the nameset I'm applying here is cold peel, I have to ensure it's already cold before I can peel off the plastic film. Use your hands to feel the nameset's film and ensure that it is cold before you start peeling it off: ![]() Feel the plastic film first before you peel it.. 10. Here comes the tricky part again.... Gently, carefully, patiently, slowly... peel off the plastic film: ![]() Carefully.. peel off the plastic film To be continued... This post has been edited by schmeichel7: Nov 26 2009, 10:09 AM |

11. OK... what happens if during the peeling off process... you see that the PU nameset is not 100% bonded? As shown below: ![]() Oh no! No worries, if.. during the process of peeling off the nameset's plastic film, you happen to notice something like shown above, re-iron again the nameset. Repeat steps 5-10 as shown above... Ensure that there's equivalent amount of coverage and pressure during ironing.. If you manage to re-apply the ironing again correctly, it should be ok and you can continue to peel the plastic film off: ![]() Carefully.. peel off the plastic film Then you have completed Part 1 and Part 2... Wait, is it done yet? Not yet... To ensure that your PU nameset is 100% solidly bonded to the jersey's surface.. the thin PU nameset's surface MUST mimic the original surface of the plain jersey.. If the jersey has some unique patterns on the surface, it must also appear on the nameset.. To do this (ensure 100% solid bonding of PU nameset), you have to do Part 3.. which is to ensure the solid bonding of the PU nameset: Part 3: Ensuring the solid bonding of PU nameset The key here is to ensure that the PU nameset's surface is not plain and solid, but it must mimic the original surface of the jersey. Here are the steps: 1. Flip your jersey inside out (terbalikkan it first) and put it on top of the ironing board: ![]() Flip your jersey inside out and put it on the ironing board 2. Iron press firmly for 5 seconds on the areas where the PU nameset sits: ![]() Another way you can do is, re-use the plastic film that you peeled off previously and then place the film on top of the nameset and then iron on top of it ... This is a risky move that I won't recommend, but it works... Ensure that you terbalikkan or flip the plastic film so that the remains from the previously removed nameset doesn't overlap the PU namesets and leave marks on it.. But jerseyman recommends step 2 (flip it inside out first), to be more safer... 3. The key here, as spoken earlier is to ensure that the PU nameset's surface is not plain solid, but it must mimic the original surface of the jersey. As I am using the Man United 2007-2009 home jersey, the back of the jersey's surface has this unique holes.. The PU nameset's surface MUST mimic the holes of the jersey's surface to ensure that it has 100% bonded solidly... Here is the comparisons between a number that was ironed pressed beneath it previous (using step 2) and a number that has not yet been done so: ![]() Comparisons between the PU numbers that was iron press beneath it (left) and not iron press beneath it yet (right) To see clearer, here are the closeup photos of the applied PU namesets that has been solidly applied on to the jersey (iron pressed while the jersey was flipped inside out or terbalikkan first): ![]() Look at the surface of the PU letters.. You can see the matching holes of the original jersey's surface ![]() Look at the surface of the PU numbers.. You can see the matching holes of the original jersey's surface Finally.......... after completing Part 3, your work is done.. Wallaaaa... ![]() Final results........... sweet! And I also completed the jersey with applying the UCL starball and CWC patch: ![]() Conclusion.... The pros and cons of applying lextra/velvet namesets against PU namesets: Lextra/velvet namesets: Pros - Less risky Cons - A bit tedious when you have to arrange them one by one PU namesets: Pros - Less tedious where the letters are already pre-arranged Cons - A bit risky If you're afraid to DIY apply the namesets yourself, you can always send it to a shop and have the experts do it for you. But if you are a daredevil and willing to take risk.... why not. But bare in mind the risks again...................... good luck! This post has been edited by schmeichel7: Nov 26 2009, 10:09 AM |
