Unless they can defy or manipulate gravity as a medium to propel their crafts, but if an object move in and out of the Earth's atmosphere at such velocity, it will cause turbulence and is detectable or even disrupt the magnetic flow. Then you might suggest that it changes density like broken into particles during flight.

The point of keeping UFO as a possibility is to drive human in terms of technology and our own existence that life may not begin on Earth, already we have evidence from comet dust that does contain water and simple organic matters (recent documentary on TV 1 Sunday). One day, when inter galactic traveling is possible, we became alien to other primitive planets.
