the problem is, your p2p/download activity will be monitored by them sleep.gif

no problem for me. I download and stream legal stuffs. There are so many free and legal user generated content in this very 21st century, but yet we can't fully experience them. Sad case.

the problem is, we have paid huge sum of money to buy original softwares, and yet the slow internet connection failed the user's experience. sleep.gif

Conclusion? You decide.

Finally, my cap gets lifted after two days of continuous scoldings to the 2nd level support managers for not doing their job right and ambiguous explanations from them. What a pain in the arse!

Resolving this issue is worse than my day job supporting my customers. I guessed my blood pressure does go up a lot this whole week....

If the bandwidth cap is official for Streamyx, I may consider re-evaluating their services again.

When my boss mentioned to us that my company is considering Streamyx ..... I was short breathed for a while.

Good for users that do not download.

1024 Kbps is 125 kB/s
Or 1.02 Mbps  ::: 0.13 MB/sec

lets just assume that that there are 100,000 users across Malaysia downloading torrent at 125kB/s or 1.02Mbps...

means 100000 x 125kB = 12500000kB

12500000 kB/s is 102400000 Kbps
Or 102400 Mbps  ::: 12500 MB/sec

12500MBps = 12.5GBps

streamyx has about 5 million users nationwide if i not mistaken... the calculation above is only for 100,000 users who download torrent together at the same time. What about fellow gamers? fellow youtube-ian? http based downloaders?
Trust me, that figure is not hard to reach. How much bandwidth TM has? How much bandwidth and packet and data can TM's system support before it becomes slowpoke? That we dont know. But it seems very low since they need to implement all this capping.

it's either they don't have enough bandwidth or they have enough bandwidth but wanted to reduce and maintain both the CAPEX and the OPEX on their existing infrastructures.

I think DU meter should do the job. Not sure whether now we need to pay or not.

I'm more interested in bandwidth monitoring on the router level. Tomato firmware, maybe? Otherwise you need to run a gateway PC to monitor the bandwidth.

let's take the below situation for example

you subscribe a new package from TM, 1Mbps (RM 30) which have monthly data cap of 10GB. It means, once you reach 10GB of bandwidth (including uploading, browsing, streaming, etc), your usual speed (about 180++KBps) will be throttled down to slower speed (eg. 40KBps) and you have to stick with that slow speed till TM reset and you'll get the speed back on next month.
*
What is going to happen to my bill? Do I need to terminate and resubscribe or they will just charge me RM30 instead of RM88 on my next bill when this comes?

Would TM capped my collage link to certain size icon_question.gif ?
*
Probably not. If your college is using a leased-line or business package Streamyx.

However, this is not confirmed yet. But if this is true, this is going to be really bad for my office too. On the other hand, I wouldn't care if my office is running on fiber.

10 GB for using Screamyx. If it's true, it still better than Celcom BB with 5 GB limit.
*
Still a speculation. We'll see when TM really starts their bandwidth capping fest. laugh.gif
