Wrong boots got Diego Forlan kicked out of Manchester UnitedDiego Forlan has revealed he was kicked out of Manchester United by Sir Alex Ferguson for wearing the wrong boots.
Forlan, who played for United between 2002 and 2004 before joining Villarreal, said Fergie flew into a rage when he refused to wear the boots the Old Trafford boss demanded.
Fergie famously threw a boot across the Old Trafford dressing room in anger, cutting David Beckham above his right eye, and Forlan claimed he also lost the plot with him.
"Ferguson wanted me to play with high studs, the interchangeable ones that suit wet pitches," said Forlan, a flop at United who took 27 games to score his first goal for them.
"But I feel more comfortable in low ones. I agreed to change boots, but I didn't. Against Chelsea, I slipped in front of goal and wasted a chance.
"Afterwards, I rushed to the dressing room to change boots. Ferguson caught me. He grabbed the boots and threw them. That was my last game for United."
Forlan - now at Atletico Madrid - also revealed how Fergie called him with inside information on Arsenal when Villarreal met the Gunners in the Champions League last season.
"I was having a drink in Villarreal, when a friend answered my mobile," said Forlan. "It was just before we played Arsenal in the Champions League and
Ferguson wanted to tip me off."And when we were in London he showed up at our hotel. I still have a good relationship with Sir Alex and his brother Martin.
"We have conversations and sometimes he asks me about South American players I might know of."
Forlan was also full of praise for his former skipper at United, Roy Keane, whom he revealed tried to sign him when he was in charge of Sunderland.
"Roy Keane's charisma, his personality on and off the pitch, he's a gentleman," said Forlan.
"In training he'd explain things in a good way, and sometimes in a bad way because it mattered.
"When he was boss at Sunderland, he called me all the time to go and play for him."
