...edberg, sampras, courier, everyone's uncle and their friend have played with this racquet smile.gif errr... or if i am not mistaken...

...I have no idea how this racquet became so popular... must've been the top players using it... anyways, after the wilson hammer, I have not used any other wilsons so can't compare to the current wilsons, but just to have my say, so I will continue on...

...the racquet felt so twangy(?), ploppy(?) and generally so devoid of feel I wonder how sampras could do so deft touches with them rclxub.gif ...each time I hit with them I felt so bad afterwards I had to warm-down with with my steffis just so I could be restful later... but honestly, they felt cushioned yet vibrated like mad (which is why sampras used dampers i suppose)...

==> My verdict; so-so racquet, lotsa power though but definitely over-rated. Maybe lack of more better racquets during that time... the max 200gs on the other hand... ;D (My views so no need to hantam me...)

hmmm what are you trying to imply huh friend??? mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

...heh heh just kidding... yeah some have played for long time and lived long time, some played long time but just finished nenen(?), and all other variants...

...myself, I cam from a generation when jennnifer capriati (who, you ask?) was the 15yo tennis prodigy, and she is what now? 40? or errr somewhere around that hah hah... ah the good old days... but back then, women players were few and far between... martina navratilova *brrrrr*, helena sukova *yikes*, pam shriver *shock*... really have to be a fan of the game to watch women's tennis... except the gorgeous graf biggrin.gif ...sabatini and maybe one or two others, the rest were uh... hardly pleasing to the eyes... nowadays, it's like the ford model agency in there, which is always good for the game, uh... marketing-wise...

QUOTE(scirocco @ Oct 8 2009, 03:35 PM)
haha... looks like i come from the same gen as you. remember agassi and his "image is everything" tagline?

his denim shorts and neon tights!!! but then the air tech challenges i still think are pretty cool.  rclxms.gif

if u think that's bad, the other day i was saying to someone that i used to use a head prestige pro, and he asked me if any pro used it, and i said yes, ivanisevic. and *horrors* he's never heard of him!
*
...hah hah scirocco yeah sure mate, agassi was the ultimate icon for me at that time, in fact he was the one who saved nike as a business and launched them to the giant they are now... tiger woods, jordan should all pay homage to agassi... although I was more partial to adidas (edberg, lendl), I was always an in-the-closet agassi fan smile.gif ...the bandana, nadal? pfttt... it was all agassi...

...he didn't know ivanisevic? doh.gif ...come one, I would be the first to admit I don't know a lot of the players before my time, but ivanisevic was a wimbledon champion!!! plus he wasn't that long ago, was he? hah hah... actually we are the museum exhibits, I guess...

QUOTE(angel-ice @ Oct 8 2009, 03:38 PM)
how do you old timer guys rate rackets today?

the older racket usually is of a solid construction, while the newer rackets have holes or ports(eg. prince rackets). from what i know, solid rackets are the best, but it will take a lot of energy to swings, where as newer hollow rackets doesn't use much energy to swing?
*
...ouch... time you cut the old-timer jokes mate heh heh... yeah would have to agree with scirocco there... the balance of a racquet plays the main part in the swing weight of a racquet i.e. HH or HL... of course, some racquets are just plain heavy but usually, balance is the main thing to look out... as you've mentioned with your wilson hammer, it is a light racquet, but with the balance being head-heavy, you can swing and hit solid shots easily, right?

...as for preference, I still prefer my older racquets but that's just because I haven't played a lot of the newer racquets, or played at all actually... i'll reserve my answer till I have tried more of the current racquets... but for me, the best racquet I have tested have been dunlop racquets, especially the max 200g with one exception being a mizuno model, which I have not come across much in malaysia...

yalah, thats why when ppl say that nadal is such a trendsetter, i'd be like aiyo... u guys really never seen agassi in his heydays...

bandanna, earrings, oakleys... nadal doesn't even come close, haha!

i used a mizuno too, a pro light 8.4. nowadays they dont even make rackets. wanted a mizuno ivan lendl but those things were bloody pricey and nowadays have turned into a collectible, which makes them even pricier than they were when new!
*
...uh scirocco dude, the mizunos were white with black/red graphics is it? do you still have it? I will gladly buy it off you if you want to get rid of it biggrin.gif ...yeah mizuno lendls were pricey back then... never had a chance to play with it, but off the rack seemed quite heavy...

...agassi, perghhh the burning ball line was awesome... bought the drifit(?) shirt, back got burning ball emblazoned across, with zipper, remember that? so gaya la that time hah hah... after some time only managed to buy donnay, but not long after he switched to head cilaka hah hah... never managed to find a head racquet i liked, so didn't follow him there...

...ahhh the good old days... I don't know about you guys, but tennis was my ultimate outlet from a bad day... like when I play tennis, even if it was against the resident creep, I would really enjoy the game and not bother too much about demolishing him... in contrast, for other sports I play, football, basketball, badminton, ping-pong, handball etc when I am playing, ultimate destruction of my opponent is the aim... like I can't relax and enjoy... but tennis, ahhhh... well not that I was less competitive but it was more pleasant when playing it... anyways, no point to get across, just sharing the joy i used to get from tennis...

p.s. Note the Used To Get... I need some of that feelgood joy la, someone come la play with me here in melaka oiiii... mana mmu guys in here huh?

mad.gif --> rclxub.gif --> doh.gif --> flex.gif

...them youngsters really need to respect us old-timers veterans in here lah heh heh...

...hey Yan by all mean, from what I've read here you seem to be going through tennis equipment like they were going out of style, so I totally support angel-ice's suggestion that you publish a sort of mini-review of the stuff you have, and are using... no need lah think about what some other people comment, I think you will be doing the tennis beginners to enthusiasts in here a big service rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif ...go Yan go!!!

bloody hell...  mad.gif

hehe joking lah... we know how to review things like wilson profile, head genesis and prince cts thunderstick only one...

also poly? what is poly???  tongue.gif
*
...kah kah kah... still remember tepuk my dahi when first saw the head genesis and the uh double profile, or whatever that technology was... prince thunderstick was another freak... what was it? 18mm at the handle all the way to (humongo-size??) at the crown... not that I could see what the fuss was about... power so-so as i recall... now, if you say wilson hammer, that was a bloody powerful stick... too powerful for my own good, but very fun to use... 50% effort also the serves would come booming down... spins were fun too with that stick... mahveles!

...as for prae, yeah family man now, one wife (!), 3 lovely kids, full time work plus part time work so even less time to catch up on racquet stuff let alone play the game, so yeah, us relics experienced dudes will just lay back and see how the kids here are doing!

hey prince thunderstick is powerful man.. but damn fragile..crack them at age 11..3 sticks !!!  parents also cant believe it sleep.gif
*
...powerful the thunderstick may have been powerful compared to the competition, but it didn't do anything for me la ~Battousai~... no idea why... I guess more mental than anything, since the big fight was between hammer and the thunderstick... since I was using hammer, I felt thunderstick was nowhere near its league... even logically thinking I was convinced the thick taper at the throat was superior to the cts of the thunderstick... plus the guys who used thunderstick at our camp always lose to me hah hah... (or at least in my memory the did biggrin.gif)

...but hammers crack like porcelain also... don't remember my mates complaining about their thundersticks cracking... you swing how fast ah ~Battousai~? 11 year old some more... dang child prodigies!

no idea what was my swing speed then...but i crack 1 during service,1 smash, and 1 forehand the whole stick broke in half right at THROAT !!!!!!

i think coz u hammer supporter too much la tongue.gif
*
...broke at throat? sond about right since those things were really slim at that point... see how the hammer engineers (note I said hammer, not wilson engineers... other than hammer, other wilsons I tried were not very good... no offence intended wilson players here, personal preferences, ya know) made the hammer throat thicker at the stress point... but admittedly they still crack there doh.gif

QUOTE(scirocco @ Oct 9 2009, 10:51 AM)
grinner,

let an old time gear head take you back in time...  tongue.gif

technologies
head - double power wedge, integrated damping system, suspension grip
wilson - dual taper beam, perimeter weighting system, aire-shell
prince - constant taper system, db system

rackets
head - discovery, genesis, atlantis, ventoris
wilson - hammer 2.7, 3.0, 4.0, prostaff 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0
prince - CTS Thunderstick, Precision, Approach, Graduate, later Synergy series
, and the flagship Prince Vortex!!!  notworthy.gif

also remember all the fuss about those titanium guts?

the original hammer 2.7 played like a tuning fork, it was so stiff and light! when u hit with it, i remember u didn't get a thwak sound, u got more like a ping...
*
...yeah double power wedge... fishy so-called technology smile.gif ...as if the racquet knew how to flex there heh heh... (again, no offence intended head fans)... hrm... can't seem to recall synergy series... must've been the point where tennis somehow slipped from my life sad.gif ...

...okay sorry tennis fans to take you for history lesson... you kknow la old timers *sob* like to talk about old times... jap war la, vietnam war la, duit pokok pisang la... errr hammer vs cts la heh heh... kasi can la your seniors ni relive our wonder years...
ball machine vs rally partner. which is better?
*
... never used/seen a ball machine smile.gif but in my mind nothing beats the versatility of a good, solid human hitting partner... some high-end machines I know can do all sorts of shots and variations, but i dunno... like i said never used one... I'd say choosing between top-of-the line ball machine and ana ivanovic/flavia pennetta (steffi graf *yummm*) as my hitting partner, of course I would choose the latter biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

...good idea there wot... unless you get someone asking for it, would be better to lease it to yan, see if he can get some rental out of it from anywhere, and then we can split the spoils three ways... i strongly support this idea wink.gif

...Great idea k3vin82... wasn't looking forward to find him using manual searching of past pages, so thankfully found him using the search function... will send PM once I convince myself that I won't make a complete fool of myself inviting him to play then passing out from exhaustion during warming up stage tongue.gif ...not to mention his laughing at my rusty ground strokes biggrin.gif ...reminds me of framing my serve during testing of ahwee's dunlop racquet some time ago and the ball went about 300meters away... poor ahwee heh heh

...Hey thanks for the info again Yan... once I get good kaki here (still waiting all these years) then I will head there and finally cut those ancient strings... there are no deader strings than the ones in my racquets biggrin.gif ...and replacement strings will just be something a few notches above the cheapest nylons, that will be good enough for me... biggrin.gif ...I get lost reading what you rascals are using nowadays... never was very interested in string technology... as long as it can withstand more than a few vigorous hitting sessions, good enough la... but then again, never too late to join a good thing, i always say...

p.s. Must remember Jetson... Raymond... Jetson... Raymond... hey you kids know about Meet the Jetsons cartoon? hah hah sorry, just something from the old days...

...uh by the way, no idea where to get the grommets... must source from prince supplier see if they have terselit in their old drawers, or scour ebay i guess or ask from the western forums... worst comes to worst, diy some grommets from a identical/almost identical piece of grommet... that's what we used to do when had to repair old racquets with no spareparts...

Aiseh, why all the fuss... grommets are necessary la, unless the racquet in grommet-less by design... grommets prevent strings from rubbing excessively against the frame, thus prevent premature snaps. Grommets can snap, crack or break from variey of reason, so need to replace. I don't know (nor care) if question is serious or poke fun, if people ask, I try to answer honestly... hope this helps anyone.
