Codemasters has announced some sad news for fans of their tarmac racing game GRID. Online support for multiplayer races and persistent statistics is officially discontinued for the PC and PS3 versions of the game:

    After three years of service, 2008’s Race Driver: GRID's online play service has been discontinued for the PS3 and PC editions of the game. This follows the decision by a third party provider to decline the offer of an extended contract to continue online play on these platforms. Race Driver: GRID for Xbox 360 is not affected. We thank fans for their support and apologise to those affected by the end of this service.

They try to blame it on a third party, but you would think that if Codemasters really cared about supporting their games, they'd find another third party to pick up the slack. At least until GRID 2 comes out...

GameRanger has rescued Race Driver: GRID - known as just GRID in North America - from online oblivion after the game had been stricken from official servers a few days ago. The PC online gaming service will now host the game for those players still enjoying the racer.

This is one of many games - over 600, in fact - that GameRanger has kept the online gaming alive for, most recently rescuing Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 and The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth. They also service newer games like Borderlands and Demigod.

The Western Australian company solves router and firewall network problems automatically, making it simple to play online with friends. GameRanger now has over 1.7 million members. GameRanger runs on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and is available as a free download from the official site here.

As for PlayStation 3 GRID fans - sorry. Still no way to play online for now.
