John O'Shea is calling for United to build on a first opening-day win for three seasons when the Reds travel to Turf Moor in midweek.
After last week's internationals, the domestic games now come thick and fast, giving the Reds and the rivals a chance to rack up the points.
"You don't want to be playing catch-up, even after only one game," O'Shea told MUTV. "Other teams are looking stronger now so it's important we stamp our authority early on in the season."
"We've opened the last two league seasons with draws so we're happy to have picked up three points against Birmingham. Now we move on with a tough game at Burnley."
O'Shea was an authority figure for United on Sunday, as he led the team out in the absence of Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand. Although he later handed the armband to half-time sub Ryan Giggs, the captaincy was still an honour for John.
"It was very special. I've done it in friendlies which is also nice, but to do it in a league game when it really matters, for the manager to have that faith in me, is something special and something I'll always cherish," said O'Shea.
The Irishman was the most experienced member of United's back four, but he had no qualms about the relative youngsters around him.
"I enjoyed playing alongside Jonny Evans at centre-back, we know each other very well as we're good friends off the pitch. So there wasn't going to be a problem there and behind us Ben Foster showed he's going to be a special keeper."
Foster's wonderful save to deny Birmingham sub Christian Benitez was perhaps more vital than it should have been - O'Shea admits to being anxious after the Reds missed several chances.
"It would have been nice to get the second goal, particularly in the first half because I think then you would have seen a more confident second-half performance. I think we let the edginess creep into our game in the second half and that encouraged Birmingham."
O'Shea didn't find fault with United's forwards for not killing the game; instead he backed match-winner Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen to score more as the season gets into full swing.
"Michael was unlucky with a couple of chances but I'm sure he'll get off the mark soon and, like Wayne, get his goals in runs. As for Wayne, I think pre-season was so important, for him to get that sharpness he needs. Once he's sharp, he's so hard to stop. I think his goal today will give him confidence and that can only benefit us."

United win and Liverpool lose. Isn’t football great?
What a perfect start to the new season. Although, judging by the Reds' narrow victory over Birmingham, you may need to prepare yourself for a nerve-wracking nine months. Afterwards, Sir Alex told me he’d gladly take eight 1-0 wins every season. Eight! He must be joking. My nails are in ruins after one.
I must admit I was immensely confident before yesterday’s game. I was blithely telling everyone who would listen that United would declare at 3-0 and win easily. I certainly didn’t expect to be furiously checking my watch for the last 15 minutes or so.
After the Reds failed to get a second goal, you could sense Birmingham were growing in belief and confidence. And United were indebted to Ben Foster for making a terrific save from substitute Christian Benitez. (By the way, did you notice Benitez had the name 'Chucho' on the back of his shirt? Apparently it was his nickname in South America. I’m assured it translates as “little annoying dog”, which apparently accurately reflects his playing style. I’d welcome your suggestions for nicknames that the United squad should have on their shirts!)
I was pleased Foster had such a good game in goal. He probably felt under a bit of pressure after the Community Shield but on Sunday he played with tremendous confidence. And after speaking to him on MUTV after the game, it was pretty clear he’s determined to take his chance while Edwin is out injured.
Speaking of injuries, how strange it is that so many defenders have been struck down so early in the season. I guess that’s why you need such a big squad. You’d never have guessed Fabio was making his Premier League debut and John O’Shea slotted in at centre-back with great assurance.
Also, Ritchie De Laet must be pinching himself. The 20-year-old Belgian was on the bench and may well play at Burnley this week. What a story - a player who didn’t feature for Stoke and spent a spell on loan at Wrexham last season is now part of the Champions' first-team squad. A football fairytale.
Finally, would you bet against Wayne Rooney bringing up a century of goals for United at Turf Moor this week? It’s quite an exclusive club and if he does it on Wednesday it’ll be in his 241st appearance. That's a pretty decent goals-to-games ratio. The views expressed in this article are personal to the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Manchester United FC. http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6637906Ferguson asks for United goal-rush» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

SIR Alex Ferguson as thrown down the gauntlet to his three mainline strikers.
The Reds boss is expecting a 20-plus goal return from Wayne Rooney after the England hitman opened his Premier League account - and wants the same from Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.
Rooney's first-half pounce won the champions their first opening day Old Trafford league match since 2006.
Following his goal against Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley last week, it is a promising start for the 23-year-old.
"Wayne's header was a good one but his follow up was quick. He reacted in the right way," said the United manager after Rooney seized on a rebound to beat top flight newcomers Birmingham.
"Hopefully that gets him on the road, with his goal in the Community Shield last week, to a very significant total for us this season.
"It is good if you have two or three strikers who can get you over 20 goals each.
"Wayne is capable of more than 20. We are not asking the impossible from the boy. He can do that and hopefully he will."
Summer free-transfer Owen and £30m club-record buy Berbatov are the other two Fergie is anticipating a 20-goal return from.
Owen had an injury-time opportunity to kick-start his competitive goal account for the Reds but was denied by Birmingham's on loan keeper from City, Joe Hart.
Michael Owen chance
"It would have been fantastic for Michael," added Sir Alex.
"It was a great save and when you see the replay it is a better save than you think. He will get his goal and once he does it will set him off on the road."
United's slender 1-0 win was a throwback to last winter when the eventual title winners accumulated eight such scorelines.
Ben Foster was the late hero for the Reds when he stopped a Christian Benitez chance and it got the 26-year-old back on form after an off-colour display against Chelsea at Wembley.
"Ben had a fantastic save in the second half. He looked very comfortable and relaxed in goal," said Fergie.
"He has learned from last week at Wembley. It was an unusual nervy performance from him in the Community Shield. We know he has got the ability and he proved that again.
"A clean sheet is always a clear indication that as a team, you are going to defend right and I will take eight 1-0s every season.
"I know it is not good for the nerves but this club is famous for that. Nobody gets an easy ride, the supporters, the staff, myself and the players. Nobody gets an easy ride.
"We are always capable of taking it right to the wire and keeping the supporters on a knife edge. It is exciting though!
"It was quite a long day because the way Birmingham set their stall out they were going to be very determined and resilient and hard to break down. That is understandable. They have come out of the Championship and are desperate to stay in the Premier League.
"It was noticeable the amount of shots we had blocked in the game. I think Paul Scholes alone had four blocked." United had to start the Premier League campaign without three of their recognised first choice defenders.
