I admit, this is a bit of an opinion (vs just hard cold facts), but I would go with a SONY LCD. I’ve always liked the Sony brand name. I’ve always gotten good use out of my sony products. Unfortunately, when you look at Sony (under their Bravia line) next to an equivalent size & resolution Samsung LCD, you really can see the Samsung is better. I spent (a long) time in the store doing this.

I actually bought a SONY 40" Widescreen LCD-S Series and its got beautiful picture quality. Even analog (which will look bad on an HD screen) was ok. I think that Sony had the best CRT TVs out there (I’ve got one and love it), and their LCD’s are just as impressive. If you’re looking at 1080p, I would bet that the differences are relatively small. Which I think, makes price the deciding factor. Of course all of this depends on your viewing distance and video source.

What are your take on both this MONSTERS in the world of LCD and the soon to come OLED....?

Sony CRT was awesome if you can get over the two lines over the screen.

As for LCD, I personally prefer IPS panel than PVA. PVA used to lose out to IPS in color and viewing angles, yet they still do IMO although at a much lesser rate. Some prefer better contrast and blacks, but I prefer a slightly natural blend. I think PVA's color looks too unreal although they give you good lines and contrast like no others.

Im using Panasonic 37" S series.

WEll, LG just launched their flagship 'Borderless' series which I personally feel is just an gimmick to twist the LCD war between SONY & SAMSUNG.....any takes on that guys?

I saw Sony's 200hz motion plus. Seeing demo of Transformers 2 on blu-ray, it was as if the movie was running at 60fps. I was blown at how the images was very smooth. They shown it side by side with a non 200hz Sony hdtv, and the difference was so obvious.

I'm guessing if we were to compare in terms selling price, Samsung beats Sony hands down...correct me I'm wrong

I'd go for LG HDTVs. Much cheaper alternatives and covers the basics just right:

1080p, great picture quality and cheaper than other major brands.

If LG is not an option, Samsung it is. Cheaper than Sony's offerings and just as good. To an average joe, of course.

I think my 50S10 plasma is much better than any of the LCDs. biggrin.gif The color are more natural(although not as bright but its less fatique for the eye), black is black, the viewing angle is the best, motion is natural(no need all the 200hz stuff).

If you check out the Sony W and Z series..they have improve in the black bits...and it doesn't look so LCDish like a computer LCD.
Side angle viewing also improve, but i think thats the best they can do.
For the same price, you can get yourself a 50S10 and a nice component BD hometheater set as well...so I'll go for the 50S10 like you smile.gif

I think samsung will come out top. The koreans are better at implementing ridiculous amount of features on their products while the japs are just stingy. Its the samsung that start offer like crazy amount of HDMI port while the japs offers like 2 or 3 only. Samsung have crazy amount of pictures tweaking options while Pana have almost no picture tweaking options.

Watch out for Toshiba this year. I believe they have a 512 individual local dimming LED that could be the one to beat.

I won't go so far to say that when you see the current crop of LED LCD TV especially the samsung that even beat the plasma in most pro reviews site.

Know what, I'm waiting for 3D to be implemented to LED TV.. Ok, both have lifetime, one gas and one organic.. But the slimness and PQ that OLED TV provides seriously blow me away.. But 40" for 8k? No way.. (for me).. Unless I'm rich..

P/S: If any of my statement is incorrect, pls feel free to right the wrong.

hmm wonder hows the flat panel market will perform for 2010....

really, improving tech is one thing but whether it is profitable is another..

pioneer is one scary example....

in malaysia, i think 60-70% of the people budget for tv is around 2.5-3.5k..
my personal opinion though..

Well I've to agree with you on that - majority of Malaysians target the price bracket of between 2k-4k for thier visual entertainment investments...

For the majority the thinking is why invest more that RM3.5k for visual entertainment, when you know that it is going to be obsolete in 2 years time!

With the rate the visual entertainment manufactures are going at the moment, we will be expecting atleast 2-3 new models every 3months to be introduced in the market.

both is a good brand I will say.
before settled down with my samsung plasma, was considering of either get between these 2 brands and finally choose Samsung over Sony in terms of price and offering.
while samsung is quite stingy on many aspects, samsung is generous with more hdmi ports as well as features.
While right now it seems both is running neck to neck, in coming years time i'm sure that Samsung will be the leading of tv technology due to huge investment on R&D which always creating a new products that is ahead of it's rivals.

the future is on korean brands, what you guys think?

I think generally Sony is a bit pricier than any other brands. Personally I have a very similar case to TS: I have a 29" Sony CRT (DRC model) which is still in very good condition and a Sony 40" Bravia S400 LCD. But every time I see Samsung LEDs at shopping complexes, very tempting.

Well any display LCDs are played on Demo sample videos which are optimized for maximizing the actual potential of the LCDs itself and at such, we can't expect to get the similiar results in normal viewing.

I am using Samsung's LCD TV just bought it recently, but not really satisfied me.
Samsung 's port is not really good thr,1 of the port seems like "failure",but still can't confirm is its problem or my hdmi cable.but so far go for gaming & movie is great.

Sony?still in research for it...

This the price Sony is paying for not participating early in the flat panel market. It became complacent and arrogant, resting on its CRT laurels.
I'm waiting for this giant to wake up and start taking the lead in flat panel innovation and start offering cool stuffs for its panels.
But I'm not holding my breath seeing how Walkman lost to iPod.

To me, iPod success is because of media (which puts the item as a 'high-class' or 'popular' product) and Apple itself, who loves to innovate cool looking stuff with scary prices.. I like most of their product, but never own one..

It's like I'm paying lots of money so that people could look at me and just to experience 'fluid-like' interface..

P/S: Fluid-like is my own terms referring to the GUI that visually looks cool.. Sorry if I offended u. =)

Well, lets just say that SONY has a few surprises up their sleeves just waiting to be unveiled. Yes, SONY lost out in the race of introducing both LCDs & LED TVs to Samsung but being the pioneer in introduction alone doesn't assure you the market if you ask me.

Yup, look how Sony got lost in the mobile entertainment gear - Walkman didn't evolve into iPod/iPhone.
And speaking of Pioneer, superb spec also doesn't guarantee the market. laugh.gif
