there is a crossover (xover) setting in your receiver (usually 80hz)

sub - everything below xover goes to the sub only, and everything above xover goes to fronts

front - everything (above and below) goes to the fronts only, and nothing goes to the sub

both - everything goes to the front and also everything below xover goes to the sub. this only makes sense when your front speakers can go below 80hz with any decent output; i.e small bookshelves rarely, and satellite speakers not ever. so if you have floorstanding speakers it may make sense to try.

sub obviously has some very little treble sound coming out from it ....

the amp adjust the frequency ... by smoothing (e.g rounded up) the pitch for the woofer bass ... but since it's rounded up ... some might not be fully rounded up ...... good amps or double amp (rounded up then rounded up again) can facilitate better bass

pls excuse me if i explained wrongly .... this is what i remember from my fiziks .... it's been more than 10 years ... lol
