My short review of ACRyan PlayON HD (POHD), and comparison with new released WDTV Live.

My setup:

Using stock Realtek UI (as seen in Asus Oplay!), this player can play every movie throw into it. Since im only have 5.1 speaker setup, my only concerned audio output format is Dolby Digital and DTS, so Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD is not really my requirement (pls correct me if i'm wrong), and I also didn't have any BD backup or rip in my collection. and since my TV only support up to 720p (1080i doesn't really count), so all my video collection is only up to 720p resolution (save some space!) biggrin.gif

QUOTE(tarm @ Nov 11 2009, 02:15 AM)
I think if u read my comparison between wdtv live and acryan, i also got complains on wdtv part.

not every player is perfect.
*
Thanks for the comparo...nothing against ACRyan cause it is my preferred choice (cause it has coaxials output).
If i go WDTV route, I need to get an amp, or converter from Toslink to coaxial that would cost half of the player itself.

In your review you mention only 720p stuff..

I collection are mostly made of 1080p stuff (nope, not bragging) and nowadays, encoders are releasing versions that are 12Gb~18Gb file and bit rates of above 13.9 ~ 18Mbps.....especially, Wiki releases..
(I rarely watch SD material anymore...unless its my kids barbie collection)

I hope it can play through it smoothly...

bro, cant play and play with jerky is different issue, dun mixed it into same category.second,i never meet the jerky when playback any file even the remux version, but mayb i just dun notice it.pls judge when u really test it on hand.
*
Sometimes, with other players, the jerky, shuttering and pixellation is so bad...the player just hangs or crash.

Anyway, I'm going to my friend place to check out the ACRyan..will be bringing a long a few hard to play stuff as well.

Hope its OK...cos' this player is my only option to get. icon_rolleyes.gif

The jerky is verry serious during action scene the piang piang scene in terminator . My family member even complained ... Acryan users pls give a final conclusion whether are u facing this problem ? If yes , how u solved it.
*
Which release was it, 1080p or 720p? WiKi, METiS or CHD, etc?

Surprisingly 1080p Wiki seems to be OK for T4

This is not so good news. Look as if this Playeron!HD not so ong?
hmm.gif My LCD samsung with built-in media player can play T4, 5th Element and many other 1080p version without being a jerk.

Hey azbro, I await your results anxiously cos I also thinking of this player for my Plasma. Hope your test includes T4 and 5th Element 1080p version.
*
wow, LCD samsung with built it player Rocks....thats the future...

QUOTE(soulquarianz @ Nov 11 2009, 09:21 AM)
my t4 also no problem....1080 wiki courtesy of azbro...

i suggest u format your HD using acryan and it will create internal buffer (around 300MB if not mistaken)...mine so far seems to be ok...and my HD only have 3GB free smile.gif out of 1.5TB....
*
yes...thats probably it...maybe the 300MB provides the buffer or something like it...trouble is, need to buy a new hardisk to format it with PoHD.

Will formatting using PoHD erase all the files in the HDD?....or is it something like a surface format like converting FAT32 to NTFS without deleting the contents?

err..not confirmed yet cause friend maybe going outstation during that day. doh.gif

I think T4 and Fifth element no problem...only thing must try ROTF 1080p WIKI, EuReKA (18.1 Mbps) or Epik (16 Mbps)
That one if can play means its good enough

what model is your samsung LCD that has built in media player?
*
Should be the LA40B650T1R...dun play play...can play from Hardrive and optional Wireless also bro...the DTS thing need to wait for future models...

Samsung did this well...only need to improve in the DTS and external Digital Audio output.

The built in player from Samsung cannot decode DTS ler... so all movies will have to convert to AC3 if I am not mistaken, hence I did not use it. I did try to play Fifth Element once. Not bad.

Tried ROTF with the PoHD, so far so good.

Added on November 11, 2009, 10:40 amJust wanna confirm, the jerky issues encountered are all played via external HDD (thru USB) or internal HDD?
*
Which RoTF...is it 1080p WiKi?...the one from 1080p ETHOS sure can play one cause lower bit rate.

T4 1080p Wiki is surprising very smooth...same like StarTrek 1080p Wiki.

But TF2 1080p Wiki is something else.

C200 still have lot of bugs as i read it from other forum or review.  Lots of forumer said they would just stay for using A110 instead of upgrade to C200.  Any idea where can i find those player?  I am afraid will KENA TAX if import from SG....  As for Oppo BD83, a friend of mine had test it out and understand that it can play MKV smoothly.  Who know it might can play BD-ISO through firmware update in future.  PQ and AQ wise it should be superb.

Just bought a player with the FW V7.06.r2388.. I am not sure what it is but at times the file got no sound..then I play play abit here and there and the sound comes on. Is it normal?
*
1. Check the rear connections...made sure fully inserted at the media player as well as the amp or TV
This is the main culprit for sound problems...yeah..check the connections again.
2. Try playing another file.
3. Is it the audio only no sound..or the Video and Audio both having problems?

I'm sure a lot of people here download from rapidshare.  Just wanna ask if you guys having any dl problem with rapidshare the past few days.  My internet line is fast downloading other thing but damn slow when downloading with rapidshare.  Did anyone notice the same thing?  Is rapidshare having problem of TMNut has block rapidshare dl?
*
Not sure bro...nowadays I download from RS server to DLnext server at abt 5000Kb/s to grab it fast, then I dl it to my computer at the max speed available to my line (ave230Kb/s for 2Mb line)
You should try it bro thumbup.gif , An its not only for RS..you can download as a premium user from depositfiles.com, filefactory.com, hotfile.com, netload, megaupload etc.
Do check it out brows.gif

Rapidshare die liao.

*
For me the most significant factor that made RS die is because of the point system which makes it 10X harder to get extended. Now even Referer points are important to generate an account through points. Thats why its difficult to get cheap accounts nowadays.
And TM intervention.

Actually, this is not my first media player. Before this, I've been watching avi files on my reliable first generation ABigs (Sarotech) DVP260 for about 3 years but alas, time to retire it as it does not play mkv files cool2.gif

*
hmm...my ABigs 260X is playing MKV very well...not sure if I want to spend half a grand to get the ACRyan or not...
