I have been watching avi movies with my laptop via VLC player. I can load .srt subtitles via VLC player and watch along with it. Recently my laptop died on my and I looked for another alternative.
Surprisingly I found out that the China made DVD player could play AVI files burned on the DVD-R. I know China DVD players are basically using the same type of Operating System, so my question is would the player would be able to load the .srt files and play the movie? How do I go about it? Burn .srt files on a a folder with the avi files?

Yeah...thats abt it....
Just make sure the file is the same name: Example
Kinkong.avi Kinkong.srt
It works 99% of the time.
But if it doesn't work, sometimes its best to copy paste the name so that both match perfectly.
Actually, you don't have to create a folder....it will auto detect it. Since a DVD-R can fit abt 4~5 movies.
Just burn them without a folder. Example
1.Kinkong.avi 2.Alienz.avi 3.Transmophers.avi 4.Terminations.avi 5.Kinkong.srt 6.Alienz.srt 7.Transmophers.srt 8.Terminations.srt
But if I were you, I'll get a DVD player with USB2.0 slot... no hassle of burning. Make sure it is USB2.0 (aka Hi-Speed USB) since it plays much smoother than the normal USB.
