AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Berba: I can do better

QUOTE
Dimitar Berbatov feels he has plenty more to give at United and is determined to better last season's goal tally.

The Bulgarian netted 14 times following his deadline day move from Tottenham at the start of September as he helped the Reds to Club World Cup, Carling Cup and Barclays Premier League glory.

Berbatov is relishing the opportunity to get a full pre-season under his belt and hopes it will provide him with the perfect platform to continue his improvement.

"I think I can do better [than I did last season]. I think I can do more. That’s why I’m happy to be here on the pre-season tour," he told MUTV.

"It’s always beneficial to start well and have a good pre-season and I feel I’m training well at the moment.

"I’m here to score goals and I hope to score more and more for United this season."

Kiko: I'll learn from Owen

QUOTE
Pinched arms might be a common complaint in the United treatment room this summer as players young and old come to terms with their surroundings.

Federico Macheda and Michael Owen in particular could be forgiven for wandering around Asia in a state of disbelief - twelve or even six months ago, neither could have contemplated leading the Reds' attack, let alone together. But that was the situation in Kuala Lumpur on Monday evening local time, and Kiko is clearly grateful for every opportunity.

"I have to thank Sir Alex because without him I wouldn’t have the chance to play in the first team," Kiko told MUTV. "I know I have to work hard and make sure he gives me more chances."

Macheda is driven to take opportunities on and off the field, which includes maximising the time he spends training and playing with new signing Owen - his fellow scorer in Monday's 2-0 win over the Malaysian XI.

"It’s very important for me to learn from Michael because he is one of the best strikers. If I work with him and learn, I can get better, day after day."

Sir Alex not only praised Kiko after Monday's match, he also spoke highly of the Italian earlier on the Asia Tour.

In an interview with PA Sport, the manager said:

"Macheda is top drawer, a hero in the making, just as Cristiano Ronaldo was.

"He does not have the lightning reactions of Ronaldo but he is quick around the box and he has an eye for goal. He was way in front of everyone with his finishing in training the other day - and I mean everyone. It was magnificent to see.

"It is hard to believe he is just 17. We probably need to check his birth certificate because I reckon he is at least 28!"

GLAZERS DENY CASH CRUNCH

QUOTE
THE Glazer family have denied claims they have blocked Sir Alex Ferguson from spending the bulk of Cristiano Ronaldo’s £80m transfer fee.

United’s owners insist the money is available – but say Ferguson will not fritter it away on “mercenary” players. United are understood to have rejected the chance to buy Samuel Eto’o and Emmanuel Adebayor.

They then saw Carlos Tevez reject their offer of a permanent deal to join Manchester City, and were outbid for Lyon’s Karim Benzema by Real Madrid. Fergie has spent only £20m this summer, the bulk of it on Antonio Valencia from Wigan.

That prompted suggestions that purse strings have been tightened while neighbours City have launched the biggest spending spree in the history of English football.

But Teshin Nayani, the Glazer’s spokesman on United’s Far East tour, says Ferguson has around £60m to spend if he can find the right players.

He said: “The manager has a significant amount of money to invest if he wants to. The truth is a lot more prosaic.

“The delay is because the manager has not been able to locate the players that he believes fit the United mindset – ones who are motivated to play for United. You don’t want mercenaries – and pay over the odds for players who are not willing to give their all.”

Nayani revealed Malcolm Glazer and his family are paying a staggering £43.3m a year in interest on the money they borrowed to buy United four years ago – but the club is still making healthy profits despite the global economic downturn.

He added: “We do carry a significant amount of debt but our interest payments are around £43.3m a year while our operating profit was £80m, topped by an extra £25m from transfer profits.”

United and Owen 'perfect' match

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson’s capture of one-time Kop idol Michael Owen from Newcastle represents a colossal coup for the Old Trafford boss.

So says Phil Chisnall, the last man to move directly between the two footballing superpowers of the north-west, when United transferred the creative inside-forward to Liverpool for £25,000 in the spring of 1964.

Nearly half a century on from that deal, displaying a unique qualification to comment on Owen switch allegiances, Chisnall is unequivocal: “It’s a brilliant piece of business. Michael’s had his injury problems, but he didn’t become a bad player during his time at St James’ Park. If you’d put George Best into that Newcastle team he’d have struggled!

“When United are playing well, and the passing movements are flowing, they create countless chances, and he’ll poke in a high percentage of them. He won’t be bombing about all over the place as Carlos Tevez did, but he’ll wait for his opportunities and he’ll score hatfuls."

Owen has already shown signs of his poaching qualities in two pre-season matches, scoring two goals. And Chisnall feels that, at Old Trafford, the England forward can rediscover his best form.

"United have found themselves a thoroughbred striker without paying a transfer fee and Michael Owen has got himself back in the top bracket," he adds. "It’s a perfect scenario for both parties.”

Manucho improved at United

QUOTE
Manucho believes he improved as a player during his time at Manchester United despite his lack of first-team football.

The 26-year-old has switched to Spain this summer to join Real Valladolid after making just three substitute appearances since signing for the Red Devils in January 2008.

The Angola international was a surprise acquisition with the striker largely unknown in Europe and was subsequently loaned out to Panathinaikos and Hull City during his 18 months at Old Trafford.

Manucho netted just twice for the Tigers in 17 appearances last term but he is confident he can score goals in what he describes as the most technical league in the world.

"I am delighted to join Valladolid, it is not the big club like Manchester United but it is a very good club," he said.

Honour

"It is an honour to play in the most technical league in the world, people will say I did not do well at Manchester, but for me I learned a lot with very great players.

"It was not easy to get in the first-team of the best team in the world but what was easy was to learn with them.

"My ambition is to make a name for myself here, score plenty of goals because I can score goals in this league and I will have to score plenty like my hero Samuel Eto'o."

Skipper returns home

QUOTE
Club captain Gary Neville has flown home to Manchester after picking up a minor groin strain on the Reds' Asia Tour.

Neville trained at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Thursday but left his team-mates in Korea on Friday and will miss the final two Asia Tour matches (against FC Seoul and Hangzhou Greentown).

The England international was an unused substitute in United's first tour game before getting 62 minutes under his belt against a Malaysia XI on Monday night.
