However, while Anderson’s fortunes appeared to be changing, the same could not be said for Wes Brown. In pre-season the 29-year-old seemed to be getting over the terrible luck he had with injuries last season, but a thigh strain forced him out of the game in the 37th minute, Rio coming on to replaced him.

The boss was also pleased with the performances from the two youngest Reds on the pitch. Teenagers Craig Cathcart, who stepped in after Nemanja Vidic picked up a calf injury in the warm-up, and Fabio both excelled.

Fergie: Anderson must push on

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Anderson can go on a goal run after finally opening his Manchester United account with a superb free-kick on Wednesday.

Anderson's stunning strike against Boca Juniors in the Audi Cup in Munich could be just what he needs to begin scoring with regularity this season, according to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

It has taken the Brazil midfielder over two years to get on the scoresheet for United but Ferguson believes the floodgates may well now open.

"We hope this will spark him off and give him the incentive to be more positive with shooting for a start," said Ferguson.

"He has been with us for two years, as you know, and had many close opportunities with goalies saving or shots hitting the post.

"Hopefully his luck changes and he takes the incentive of scoring today to go on and score more for us."

Anderson curled in a fine left-footed free-kick from just outside the penalty area to give United the lead in a match they eventually won 2-1 with Antonio Valencia scoring on his debut.

In the past, Cristiano Ronaldo would probably have taken that set-piece and his sale to Real Madrid could be Anderson's chance to get more opportunities with a dead ball around the penalty area.

Just as long as Anderson is on the field, Ferguson admitted he is one of the options for free-kicks and penalties.

"I have been thinking about this for two weeks now and I have no definite answer to it," he said.

"I think it depends on what 11 players are playing in a particular game. I think we have two or three players who are natural to take responsibility.

"(Patrice) Evra, (Michael) Carrick, Anderson and (Ryan) Giggs are all natural choices to take penalty kicks, but when I choose my 11 on a particular day, then I will make my mind up on that day."

The chances are Anderson will be figuring more often this season following Ronaldo's departure.

Ferguson says he, as well as Nani, has the "right platform and right training environment" and that the 2009-10 season could be when they come of age.

"They are young and when you are young and have the ambition, then that can happen," said the Scot.

"I expect to see that improvement and have no fears about Anderson and Nani.

"They are young boys with young minds playing at the highest level of football."

United will be back in action in the Audi Cup final on Thursday when they face hosts Bayern Munich, who crushed AC Milan 4-1 in the other semi-final.

Cathcart revels in senior start

QUOTE
Although he had swapped the surroundings of Carrow Road to the Allianz Arena in just four days, Craig Cathcart was far from fazed during an impressive senior outing against Boca Juniors.

Having featured for Ole Gunnar Solskajer's Reserves against Norwich on Saturday, the young Northern Irish defender was drafted into the Reds' Audi Cup squad to face the Argentine giants on Wednesday evening - and he hardly put a foot wrong.

"It's brilliant," Craig told MUTV. "I played at Norwich on Saturday with the reserve team, then to fly over here and play in this brilliant stadium against good opposition was a good challenge and I really enjoyed it.

"It was a tough match. Boca Juniors are a different club to who you play against in the Premier League and overall it was nice to win. With great players around you, it makes you more comfortable and hopefully I fitted in quite well."

There was one heart-in-mouth moment for Cathcart, as his errant header ricocheted off his own crossbar ("It was like slow motion. Those Adidas balls move around a lot," he admitted), but he is eager for more senior action this season.

"I've been out on loan in the last three seasons, so hopefully I might get to stick around this year and try to get amongst the squad and get a few games," he said. "I'd like to see what happens. We've got a big squad and the manager will know which players to pick."

11:19 – It seems United fans weren't the only ones surprised to see Anderson get on the scoresheet last night. Rio Ferdinand's just told me: "As soon as I saw him lining up the free-kick I said to everyone else on the bench that there was no chance it was going in. But fair play to him, it was a great goal... and I was the first one up out of the dugout to celebrate. Hopefully he can kick on now and get a few more this season."

Evra hails Utd progress

QUOTE
July 31, 2009

UNITED full-back Patrice Evra refuses to believe the Premier League champions are any weaker after losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez this summer.

While manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted replacing Ronaldo, who scored 26 goals last season, is going to be difficult, he will surely be buoyed by the performances of Antonio Valencia, Anderson and Nani during the Audi Cup over the last few days.

Valencia and Anderson both opened their accounts for the club in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Boca Juniors while Nani stood out in last night’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich.

And Evra believes United have nothing to worry about in compensating for the loss of two key members of their team from last season.

“They are two big players, but the star of the team is the team,” he said.

“Two players alone do not make a team. We have signed some good players and, like I say, Manchester United are a team and not only about two players.

“I can already see a good team coming along and we are all confident about doing well with this team as it is.”

Evra believes United have made good progress since waving goodbye to Ronaldo and Tevez.

Although there has been much criticism of their tiring tour of the Far East, Evra believes it has played an important role in preparing for the upcoming season.

It has allowed Ferguson to take a look at new options in attack following the arrival of Michael Owen, who probably should have scored his fifth goal in as many games at the Allianz Arena on Friday night.

And Evra is confident the team will be firing on all cylinders come the start of what he is predicting to be another successful season for the Red Devils.

“We worked really well in Asia and played some good games, it was a good tour,” he said.

“We are moving along bit by bit in preparation for our first match of the season on August 9 against Chelsea.

“We want to at least defend the titles we won last season and try to win the Champions League.”

Rio: Reds on the up

QUOTE
July 31, 2009

UNITED defender Rio Ferdinand reckons the Reds showed "glimpses of improvement" desite their defeat on penalties to Bayern Munich in the final of the Audi Cup on Thursday night.

United matched their hosts inside a packed Allianz Arena and were unfortunate not to come away with a win after Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney both squandered chances in the second half of a goalless 90 minutes.

The Reds then lost the shoot-out 7-6.

But Ferdinand insists the result will not knock United off course as they aim to hit their peak for August 16 when they host Birmingham at Old Trafford.

"I think we showed glimpses of improvement," he said.

"I think the Asia tour has been a very good workout for us physically and today and yesterday were a step up in class in opposition.

"Physically, we are on the road to getting where we want to be for the beginning of the season.

"I think Asia was a long tour for us physically," he said. "We were very tired after that.

Training

"We now get a couple of days off and then we get back to training and working hard, but we are on the right road."

Meanwhile, Ferdinand believes the club can use their experience of rebuilding to cope with the loss of star men Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The pair both left United this summer, for Real Madrid and City respectively, but Ferdinand has seen plenty of big name players come and go in his eight years at Old Trafford and expects the Reds to move on quickly.

"I think that's inevitable," he said. "When you lose any players, your team plays differently no matter who you lose.

"We lost two very good players in Cristiano and Carlos, but Manchester United is a club that moves on and has remained a successful side.

"We have done that in recent years when we lost players of the ilk of David Beckham and Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Veron and players like that.

"People thought we would fall by the wayside but it didn't happen."

Antonio Valencia has arrived from Wigan and he has been earmarked as the man to step into the large boots left by Ronaldo and Ferdinand believes Sir Alex Ferguson has invested his money wisely in the Ecuadorian.

He said: "I think he will do very well this season. Antonio looks like he is going to be a good buy for us."

Owen brushes aside criticism

QUOTE
Manchester United's Michael Owen has brushed aside criticism from Sam Allardyce and Dave Whelan, stating only Sir Alex Ferguson's opinion counts.

Rovers boss Allardyce questioned Owen's ability to play 36-games plus this season while Whelan felt that perhaps the 29-year-old's desire and hunger had faded over time.

However, the former Newcastle striker, who has impressed for The Red Devils in pre-season, believes Ferguson's desire to bring him to Old Trafford supersedes any negativity aimed his way.

Owen goes as far as saying the pair might even feel 'embarrassed' by their remarks, although he is focusing his effort on impressing the United boss, not silencing the doubters.

Perception

"If that was how they were perceiving me, fine, because the greatest accolade I could have is that Sir Alex Ferguson didn't think about that," he FourFourTwo magazine.

"I can quietly sit here and look around where I am now - and if anyone else wants to look at what they've said, then they might feel embarrassed. I don't feel I have to impress these people.

"I only need to prove things to people who believe in me. I want to show Sir Alex was right to believe in me."

United trial Swedish starlet

QUOTE
Manchester United have handed a trial to Swedish starlet Linus Sjoberg.

The 15-year-old midfielder is currently with Vasteras but he has been spotted by United's Scandinavian scouting network.

The Premier League champions have now made an offer and Sjoberg is expected to link up with United on trial later this summer.

"You have to be cautious dealing with the social and footballing parts as the social environment is important when you are younger," agent Martin Klette told Fotbollskanalen.

"There are both good and bad foreign clubs as there are good and bad Swedish clubs.

"People have a tendency to focus on younger players that have had problems abroad and forget that there are very good clubs to grow in abroad."

Giggs: Secret to my success

QUOTE
James Robson

August 04, 2009

RYAN Giggs has revealed he likes the rough stuff.

The usually mild-mannered United star says there is nothing better than a training ground bust-up to keep him at the top of his game.

The PFA Player of the Year has spent 19 glorious years at Old Trafford, winning 10 Premier League titles, two European Cups and four FA Cups.

He is bidding to add to that incredible roll of honour as United seek to make it four successive titles this season.

And the 35-year-old has now revealed the secret to his success.

“The best way to deal with fatigue is to get angry,” he said. “The same goes for the rare occasions when training is a bit flat.

“You’ll see someone start an argument and that will get the session going again.

Bust-ups

“It’s ridiculous when people go on about training ground bust-ups because it’s been like that every Friday for nearly 19 years I’ve played professional football.

“Training is so competitive the day before a game that there are always arguments.”

Giggs looks in as good shape now as he did when he first burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old.

And he says he has had to make sacrifices to keep performing at the highest level well into his 30s.

“After I turned 30 I decided to change my lifestyle a lot,” he said. “Stop drinking and watch the food I ate.

“There wasn’t a specific moment. I just wanted to keep playing to the highest standard for as long as I could.

“I knew that would require certain sacrifices.

“During my 20s my favourite meal was steak and chips or chicken and chips. I didn’t even like fish when I was younger, but now if I go out I almost always have it.”

Stepney tips Foster

QUOTE
Paul Hince

August 04, 2009

UNITED goalkeeping legend Alex Stepney insists that Ben Foster will not need to be a first-team regular at Old Trafford this season to earn a place in England's World Cup finals squad.

Joe Hart, one of Foster's rivals for an England World Cup call-up, left City for a season-long loan at Birmingham because he feared being in the shadow of Shay Given at Eastlands would damage his international chances.

But Stepney - one of the heroes of United's 1968 European Cup triumph - believes Foster has already done enough to secure a place in Fabio Capello's squad should England qualify for next year's World Cup finals.

Says Stepney: "Edwin van der Sar will probably still be Sir Alex's first choice goalkeeper in the coming season.

"Even at 39 Edwin still believes he can play at the very highest level or he wouldn't have signed a new contract.

"But that shouldn't worry Ben. For a start he's still in his mid-20s and probably hasn't even reached his peak yet.

Opportunity

"I can't believe that Edwin will go through an entire season without picking up an injury of some sort and when you get to that age your recovery rate slows down.

"As usual United will have a crowded fixture list and Sir Alex will rotate his players as he always has done in the past.

"So Ben will have plenty of opportunities over the season to show the England manager what he can do.

"But to be honest with you I think he's already done enough over the last couple of years to cement a place in the World Cup finals should England get through.

"I don't think he's got too much opposition. He would certainly be my first-choice keeper if I was managing England.

"Ben just needs to be patient. "He's certainly got the talent to become a great goalkeeper for both club and the country."

Edwin misses season's start

QUOTE
The Reds have been dealt a blow ahead of the new season after United confirmed that Edwin van der Sar has been sidelined for the start of the 2009/10 campaign.

The 38-year-old Dutch goalkeeper has this week undergone surgery on a broken finger and bone in his left hand, and will be out for up to eight weeks.

Van der Sar suffered the injury saving a penalty from Danijel Pranjic in United's 7-6 shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich in the pre-season Audi Cup tournament in Germany.

The prognosis means that van der Sar won't be back to full fitness until the end of September, and therefore unlikely to be available for selection till either the Arsenal match on Saturday 29 August, or against Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight later after the international break.

It is frustrating news for Sir Alex, especially as van der Sar was so important to United's defensive solidarity last season. However, Ben Foster signed a new contract in July and Sir Alex said at the time that "[he] is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin."

This could be the opening Foster has waited so patiently for, although Tomasz Kuszczak will also see this as an opportunity to prove his worth. Sir Alex's selection will be an interesting one for Wednesday's friendly against Valencia and at Wembley this weekend against Chelsea in the Community Shield.

ROONEY: MY OWN GHOUL

QUOTE
WAYNE Rooney is being haunted by a vacuum cleaner.

The Manchester United and England striker is regularly spooked at home by a machine that keeps turning itself on.

His wife Coleen came clean about the ghoulish goings-on at the superstar couple’s mansion.

The mum-to-be revealed she is so terrified of vacuum cleaners that she will not even let Wayne, 22, switch one on.

And she said the pair were “freaked out” when their machine at home started itself up.

“It wasn’t even plugged in,” she said. “I should have got it to do the living room for me!”

It is not the first time the Rooneys have had trouble with vacuum cleaners. Wayne has admitted the sound of one always helped him sleep when he was a kid – and when he first married Coleen he used to switch on the vac if he got nervous before a big game.

If that did not work he would switch on one of his wife’s hairdryers – until she called a halt.

“I’ve ruined so many hairdryers by letting them burn out,” he said.

“Coleen hates it. She won’t let me turn on a vacuum or a fan when we’re together.”

Coleen, also 22, also admitted she would not mind a ghost in their house.

She said: “If it was the spirit of someone I knew, I would quite like it if they came to visit.”

FERGIE DEFENDS TRANSFER POLICY

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson has once again defended his decision not to make major waves in the transfer market this summer - and insisted it had nothing to do with Manchester United's massive debt.

Despite receiving a world record £80million for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, Ferguson has restricted his outgoings to £17million on Antonio Valencia and another £3million to recruit Gabriel Obertan from Bordeaux.

In addition, Ferguson snapped up Michael Owen on a free transfer, while Senegalese wonder-kid Mame Biram Diouf has also been signed by the Old Trafford outfit with an eye on the future.

However, the vast majority of United's Ronaldo money remains unspent, much to the chagrin of many fans who feel the Red Devils will struggle badly without the Portuguese.

Ferguson has heard the complaints, and the accusations that a debt approaching £700million is finally starting to bite.

But he offers a more soothing response.

"Pay no attention to the cynics who have suggested our owners have stopped us spending," he told United Review.

"Believe me, it was purely a football decision.

"Maybe it is the Scotsman in me but I believe in value, even when I am spending someone else's money, and the asking price for players we were looking at just wasn't realistic."

Indeed, Ferguson has been happy to let Real Madrid and Manchester City fuel the "inflationary spiral" in the transfer market because he feels the squad at his disposal is good enough to challenge on all fronts.

"What you must remember is that we are working from a position of strength," said Ferguson, whose side tackle La Liga outfit Valencia at Old Trafford this evening.

"We don't suddenly have to splash out to try and compete at the top."

And, while Ferguson has already admitted Ronaldo will be a "massive loss", he denies the argument that United cannot prosper without the world player of the year.

"We were never a one-man team," he said.

"We have other players who will rise to the occasion and fill the gap, of that I am sure."

Boss salutes new wing wizard

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson singled out Antonio Valencia for special praise, after the Ecuadorian laid on two goals in an impressive home debut.

The summer signing from Wigan Athletic crossed for Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley to bag the telling goals against Valencia, and generally caught the eye for his robust, direct approach at both ends of the pitch.

“The important thing for me was Valencia’s performance, I thought he was very, very good,” Sir Alex told MUTV. “He’s got great balance and he’s got power and speed. Coming to our club, he’s immediately taken the challenge well and with purpose, so we’re very pleased with what we’ve seen so far.”

While Valencia’s contribution merited special praise, Sir Alex could also reflect on a string of fine performances as his side deservedly edged an entertaining game. A glut of young talents hinted at a bright future, while the Reds’ forward line created chances with promising regularity.

“It was an opportunity to play a lot of the younger players,” he said. “Tom Cleverley scored, Darron Gibson had two fantastic shots from outside the box – he showed his power tonight, which is pleasing – and Ritchie De Laet and Fabio gave excellent performances.

“I also thought Macheda’s movement in the last third was fantastic. For a 17-year-old, he’s something special. Michael (Owen) showed marvellous movement. He should’ve scored four, but he was unlucky with the first one that he just chipped it over the goalkeeper’s shoulder and by the post. He deserved at least one of them."

A dream come true

QUOTE
Tom Cleverley admitted he had realised a boyhood dream, by bagging his first Stretford End strike in the Reds’ friendly victory over Valencia.

The combative young midfielder calmly stroked home the second goal in a deserved victory, capping an impressive all-round display in style.

Speaking to MUTV after the match, Tom beamed: “It’s every boy’s dream, isn’t it? I couldn’t ask for much better. When I found out I was in the squad I was delighted, and I wouldn’t have thought I’d be standing there, after I’d scored at the Stretford End!

“It’s what you strive for, to get in the first team and to score at the Stretford End. I’ve seen my friend (Danny) Welbeck do it and I was jealous of him when he did it (against Stoke last season), now I’ve done it and I’m just so proud.”

Naturally, Tom is already hankering for further senior involvement after his impressive outing, but he concedes that he has no idea what the coming season holds for him.

“I was told last week I’d be training with the first team this week, then I got put in the squad," he said. "It’s all happened a bit fast, but obviously it’s my first game at  Old Trafford for the first team but I think I did well.

“When you train with the first team day in, day out it makes you work harder and see you can do it. I want to play in the first team here and get a look-in. It doesn’t come much better than playing with those sorts of players and in that sort of stadium, so now I’ve had a taste I want more now.

“I’m not too sure (what the future holds), to be honest. The plan was to go on loan , but I’ll just see if I figure in the Gaffer’s plans now and just take every game as it comes.”

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Cleverley is highly-coveted property, and admits that he is still undecided on how best to further the youngster's undoubted promise.

"We don’t know what to do, in fairness," he said. "A lot of clubs have been in for him, one or two Premier division teams in fact. He’s going to be a good player, the boy. He does need experience of playing, and it’s something that I’m looking at, whether we put him out on loan."
