MU’s cancellation to Indonesia triggers US$5mil loss
JAKARTA: The cancellation of the prominent English football club Manchester United (MU) to Indonesia following Friday’s two bomb attacks that wrecked part of two hotels in Jakarta, triggered an estimated loss of US$5mil, a local daily reported Saturday.
The Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association Nurdin Halid said: “I have asked Mr. Vice President (Jusuf Kalla) to provide security guaranty for MU.
“Unfortunately, it couldn’t be done because the police is currently focusing on capturing the terrorists that had exploded the bombs.”
He added that: “If they (the police) have not arrested the culprit, then the MU’s arrival would pose risk,” China’s Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.
The English champions were scheduled to play against an Indonesia AllStar team on Monday on the second leg of their pre-season tour.
The tour, which will start with a match against the Malaysian selection tomorrow, also includes visits to South Korea and China.
In Kuala Lumpur, the MU coach Sir Alex Ferguson said that his team’s cancellation to Indonesia was for its own safety.
“This incident shocked us. We received the news few moments after landing (in Kuala Lumpur’s airport). There’s no other solution but to cancel it because we have to guarantee our players’ safety,” said Ferguson.
The cancellation was also announced by the chairman of the local committee of MU tour in Jakarta Agum Gumelar. “We received the MU’s cancellation from its websites,” said Agum.
Bombs exploded one day ahead (Friday) of the MU arrival to the Ritz Carlton Hotel. Police said that two bombs killed eight people and injured other 53 who were having breakfast in the hotels’ restaurants.
Police confirmed the incident that occurred on 07:47 and 07:57 were suicidal bombings. -- Bernama
