Its a wildcaught scorpion Hyourin. It comes preloaded with free parasites. Do what you can to save it. But don't stress yourself over it. The learning curve is by far more important.

P/s: Mites are overrated - only in Malaysian forums. The open wound that is the Fear of the unknown is often fueled with more than generous amounts salt, chilli and cuka. Sometimes to the point where the owner of the animal stresses the animal inside out just to remove things that are just superficial. You're dealing with living thing, not quantum physics.

It's actually rice wine. Supposedly good for joint pains after a hard day in the paddy fields of Nam. Now they're sold by the thousands at novelty gift shops across many Indochinese countries.

Akagi, were the young uns separated before they voluntarily got off her? They look awfully young to be separated from they're mom. One of the most difficult thing to simulate artificially is the regulation of humidity by way of osmosis. How the mother keeps her younglings hydrated until they form 'harder' shell structures which in turn prevent for loss of bodily fluids. That's just a theory, but it's one theory that's got grounds in my books.

I don't follow this thread as avidly as I used to anymore. I don't know the full story and am not judging your efforts bro. I like how you post.

QUOTE(akagidemon @ Jul 23 2009, 01:45 PM)
it all started when the mother gave birth in the parcel during shipping.
i transfered her to the enclosure and made sure she wasn't unnecessarily stressed to prevent her from eating her babies.

but she keep on eating them and then 1 day she went berserker.started to run around the enclosure and as a result a this lot u see here was thrown off her.

i pick them all out and checked the enclosure for any more that might be left behind and found 1 buried in the substrate.

the cause of the berserker mode was maggots which i found after a close examinationof the mother. a total of 4 have been removed.

the mother is doing well after the removal but she refuses the babies.

i had no choice but to try the technique that was posted by Ryo if i'm not mistaken.

all we can do is pray and hope the babies will survive.

i hope this condensation of what have happened is to your liking.
*
How unfortunate. Please keep updating this thread on how the babies fair akagi. I'd love to learn from your experience. Thanks!

@ Lester - Let's just press our luck and see what comes. smile.gif

I bet your gf is jealous now that she don't excite you as much as before Lester. If you're getting more than 10 Hottentotta judaicus, go for a large communal setup! They make excellent display animals judaicus.

Goodluck keeping the 5 remaining scorplings alive akagi.

In to report the death of my female C.gracilis. She died during parturition. Mated earlier this year with a male which was flown in specially for the occasion. I got her at 2nd instar July last year, she will be missed greatly. Rest in peace motherload and babies.

Here's an old picture I'd love to share. Taken right after a moult.

To those whom have inquired and I still owe adult AFS to, I will still continue with giving you the best scorpions I can get. However, as of today. I am quitting the sales of WC AFS.

The continued and deliberate poaching of these scorpions without knowing bounds is too much for me to consciously support. It's about time we seriously think about keeping young ones from the broods already established in the hobby and keep the cycle going instead of harvesting them from the wild with no end. I have done enough damage already.

my cloth are hanging on the wall, in a basket and on the floor. where else. getting a new one soon. or until i can make a proper hot box. which one comes first.

Added on August 6, 2009, 11:18 ami was reading the SOTM on emperor scorpion and found this little bit of interesting data.

i qoute

"The acidic nature of sphagnum peat retards the decomposition of prey remains thereby; indirectly decreasing the chance of a large scale mite invasion due to an abundant source of nutrition...."

"When mite-infested crickets are introduced into the enclosures of captive emperors, mites disperse and mate while; others invade the scorpion as a new transporteur"

any takers. i have never used sphaghum moss before.
*
Sphagnum moss my favourite substrate, second to only the all time classic cocopeat. tongue.gif They are very visually pleasing as well, especially when it comes to decorating backgrounds etc. The part about it depriving mites off nutrition is new to me. Thanks akagi.

I might experiment with a mix similar to yours too Andrew. Any mishaps so far?

That was short. Lol. Is your mix for dry/humid setup? As I'd want to try for a humid one.

Blindly supporting one side and being judgmental about the other normally professes into a very lopsided community. One which is easily manipulated by many of the bigger names in the hobby. I personally have come across quite a few of such characters. They openly go against wildcatching invertebrates, but also have their names listed as associates on companies that do exports of wildcaught animals.

But that aside, when push comes to shove. It all boils down to personal belief. I agree when you say that all original source for us hobbyists hails from the wild. That is, until we can establish our own captive care measures. Breeding them has to be of primary concern. It is also true that development of masses of lands and deforestation takes away more than poachers can ever do. But don't you honestly also think that the animals that come wild captured live in deeper, untouched jungles?

I have done my share of selling wild caught forest scorpions. They come dirt cheap. Adults and subadults - a shortcut ideal for the bidding hobbyist who is not willing to spend time and money on younglings. But believe me, when you see the sight where these scorpions are packed into small sealed plastic bags (yes plastic bags), piled knee-high into foam boxes and transported like fish to the market. Your heart sinks. Mine did.

Perhaps wildcatching should be a balanced thing. And once we can establish a stable number in captivity, the cycle of captive breeding and dispersion should follow suit.

P/s: Love the way you put things. You're a thinker! wink.gif Welcome to the hobby.

My current barkscorpion casualty count within 2 weeks:

Lychas scutilus 0.1.0 (I'm really sorry Lester - will post a pic later)
Centruroides vittatus 0.1.0
Centruroides gracilis 0.1.xx (died in parturition)
Centruroides hentzi 0.0.1

A fickened month it is. I'm beginning to wonder if my room is turning into an oven.

Rideon - I'm passing Alex and you both of my remaining C.hentzis. I hope you guys will share them as part of your scorpions. Work for breeding.
