The Curse of the Weeping Woman (2019)

So, how is this?

It is well cast, script is decent and direction is competent.

I am not sure if "the legend" of La Llorona is based on any true legend, and have to add, it is very Medea (greek myth, See Jason and Argonauts)

James Wan seem to be affiliated to the 1970s, and this movie does a good job of visit the said period.

The main leads Linda Cardellini as Anna Tate-Garcia, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen as Samantha Garcia and  Roman Christou as Chris Garcia are really good at their respective roles.

As scares go, I am not sure if there are any new ways of scaring people, and have to add first time director, Michael Chaves does a decent job.

So, if you like horror, and is crave a continuation (do note the connection is not immediately obvious) of The Conjuring Universe, this movie is a good watch.

From your review, sounded like a decent movie but nothing mind-blowing for a horror movie biggrin.gif guess i'll give this a pass.

Actually, I would recommend going to the movies for this

Part of the fun of scary movies in the theater is the "shared" experience. It will add to the movie

Just don't expect to be wowed, like The Conjuring
*
So i guess it's sorta like an enjoyable movie nonetheless but the surprise/ scare factor is lacking. Conjuring was an enjoyable movie but I'd give my thumbs up to movies like Exorcism of Emily Rose that put fear in me even after the movie ended.

Oh dear... Managed to see the trailer for Annabelle Comes Home... Has Vera Farmiga as Lorraine Warren... Looks promising...

I have been burnt by good trailer but bad movie before.... sad.gif
*
Owhhhh there's a new one out already? If the character Lorraine Warren is in it, I'd love to see it. Hahaha i know what you mean. Till now haven't got the chance to watch Possession of Hannah Grace. The trailer looked so good that I wanted to catch in the cinema but missed it as I wasn't around the whole period.

Managed to watch Crucifixion and I must say, it was pretty good. Better than I expected. The mood, suspense and jump scare was quite well done laugh.gif or maybe coz i watched it alone hahahaha

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4181782/

Also watched Incarnate (2016 film) and it was no good rclxub.gif don't bother.

Svaha: The sixth finger - Almost a good movie.

As usual, you can't avoid some Korean movie tropes. Overacting and a convoluted storyline. This reminded me a lot of the old Taiwanese Double Vision movie that starred David Morse and Tony Leung. Instead of authority investigating a cult, it's a pastor that exposes charlatans and looking into a sinister cult that target a very peculiar girl that got something to do with a Buddhist scripture. There are some disturbing imagery and things can get pretty freaky in the final act. The problem lies in messy set-ups and slow to get going. While the last act pretty good but the journey to it, is a slog. When you have nothing else to watch on Netflix, no harm giving this a look or sick of the usual haunted house/demon possession put out by Hollywood.
*
Macam yes. Will probably give it a try one of these days. I find Double Vision kinda slow in terms of pace though hmm.gif

QUOTE(defaultname365 @ Jun 12 2019, 11:05 AM)
Watched it last week during the long break.. the best Korean horror film to me remains "The Wailing".

This one is a mixed bag for me. Too much investigation and too little horror... and the whole religion thing  sweat.gif  No way I could have understood the film in its entirety without having some kind of knowledge beforehand.

The ending was quite good, unexpected, but it was really a drag. The movie's length added to the problem, what was it like 2 hours+? I think it felt like 3 hours.

Still scouting for a good horror film on Netflix this year... so far only "Velvet Buzzsaw" was OK.
*
A lot of people spoke well of The Wailing. I really need to make an effort to watch it biggrin.gif probably when i can spare some time this weekend. I like The Priest, but not so much of how it developed towards the end loll.

Another pretty highly rated one is A Tale of Two Sisters. I've seen it ages ago, but couldn't recall the story now though

[REC] is good.
It is the best in its trilogy.
In fact, do not waste your time watching the other 2 sequels.
Oh, on the same note, the US remake of this Spanish horror, entitled Quarantine, was subpar.
*
Yet to watch REC but i've seen Quarantine. It's really just so-so and pretty much "just another zombie flick".

Personal favourite goes to 28 Weeks Later and Dawn of the Dead. Honorable mention to World War Z for the storyline.

QUOTE(6so @ Jun 13 2019, 08:13 PM)
IMO the catalyst for the current zombie craze starts with 28 Days Later. It marries dark human drama with the terror of the undead. I did like the follow-up 28 Weeks Later a fair bit. It's the precursor to The Walking Dead existence. Rec is outstanding for the first two movies but ignore the third one at all cost.
*
Hmmm for me 28 Days Later was a bit draggy and i prefer the sequel. Interesting how everyone mentioned REC being really good - meaning I've got to give it a try soon.

Although not zombie flick - another horror fav is Silent Hill.

If it's slow paced like Sinister but scares you by creeping on you (the idea), then that's awesome. But if slow and story no good, it'll be kthxbye.

I watched the original version when I was young - neighbour's parent rented it from somewhere and i still recall it presents a bit of a shock to me.

A bit skeptical about remakes. The old version takes on the horror angle - Chucky was 'resurrected' in a doll. Not sure if I'll like the AI angle of the remake hmm.gif

So the takeaway i get from your review is that - the build up to the story is slow, but later on the scare is good (towards the end). I suppose it sounded a bit similar to Sinister - which I really liked. The pace was a little slow at first but nonetheless creepy and keep you glued on due to the good storytelling.

Maybe can consider hitting the cinema for this one haha.

Pet Sematary (2019)

Lack of horror scares, relying mostly on jump scares with a somewhat predictable story. There were just a couple of truly horrifying scenes. Execution/direction wise is pretty decent. The acting performances from the main cast was convincing as well. Heard it is better than the 1989 film, so that's a good thing I guess.

Overall a decent horror flick but nothing too memorable. Worth a watch if you're aching for a horror fix.

At best this is a 6/10.
*
I recall watching the old version as I saw the DVD in my Uni's library. Watched it with a friend and I'd say there's nothing scary in it.

However, read the book and you'll be amazed at how good the scare can be. The seed of horror that King sows into the reader's mind is just amazing. Sadly, none of the film brought onscreen has ever done his book(s) any justice. I'll give an exception to The Green Mile (which is not exactly horror in terms of genre) and honorary mention to Stanley Kubrick's Shining.

Salem's Lot is also a very eerie story when I read the book. I'd say the film wasn't all bad but again, lacking some sort of essence that the book carries. This will bring me to a next post below biggrin.gif

Doctor Sleep 2019

I know that once more, no film will be able to do King's book any justice. Doctor Sleep was so so so good. It's been so long (far too long) that I've read a book that could make my heart pump fast, fear for my life without any logical reason (especially in bed at night, trying to sleep) yet excited wanting to know what's next. It was very hard to put the book down every time I need to stop reading and day-in-day-out, all I could think about was where I left off.

Although a sequel, you'll be able to understand the book/ story without having read or seen Shining since it's a new plot. But you'll be able to appreciate Doctor Sleep better having read or at least watched the former.

Here's an excerpt from Wiki:-

"Following the events of The Shining, Danny remains psychologically traumatized, while Wendy, his mother, slowly recovers from her injuries. Angry ghosts from the Overlook Hotel eventually find Danny, including the woman from Room 217. Chef Hallorann eventually teaches Danny how to imprison the ghosts in lock boxes inside his mind. The adult Dan reprises his father's legacy of anger and alcoholism. Dan drifts for decades, but eventually finds an AA community and gives up drinking. He settles in a New Hampshire town and works in a hospice, where his remnant psychic abilities provide comfort to the dying. With the aid of a cat that can sense when a person is about to die, Dan becomes known as "Doctor Sleep".

In the meantime, Abra, a toddler girl with psychic powers greater than Dan's, slowly and unintentionally establishes a telepathic bond with him. As she grows, the contact becomes more conscious and voluntary. One night, Abra psychically witnesses a ritual torture and murder of a boy by the True Knot, a group of quasi-immortals who wanders across America and periodically feed on "steam", a psychic essence that children with "the shining" produce when they are tortured to death. Horrified, Abra telepathically reaches out for Dan, but they are unable to do anything for the boy. At the same time, the True Knot's leader, Rose the Hat, is also aware of Abra's existence as a potential major source of sustenance."

I look forward to watching Doctor Sleep, with lower expectation for the film sweat.gif ...since the book was totally awesome.

QUOTE(6so @ Oct 6 2019, 10:34 AM)

Coming from Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill. Interesting premise with enough mystery hook to invest on the characters. The ending a little predictable but OK for what it is. A mysterious corn field that lure unsuspecting victims to trap in a time loop nightmare. Very "Lost-esque". Watchable to pass time and not a horror breakthrough.
*
Did ya say Stephen King?! Wonder if they have a book for this, not that I know of hmm.gif danggg if yes I'll buy the book, not so much of the movie though.

Finally watches the film. Probably due to its over hype, there was a slight over-expectation. I mean it's good but not mind-blowing good. I enjoyed the little plot twist that came along but alas the concept wasn't anything new to me.

Enjoyed the film? Definitely.
Worthy of Oscar? Probably.

Hahahaha okay i don't recall watching the English version but the Japanese one yes. Ju-On is scary as hell imo. When i watched it the first time, i didn't understand the story and finds is nonsensical. But several years later i rewatched it, understanding the concept/ story better and finally realized it's about curses being passed on (and you don't even know it). Then it became freaky to me in a way and I slept with the lights on for 2 nights in a row.

Ghost Stories (2017)

Summary (from IMDB)
Skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a trip to the terrifying after being given a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions.

My thoughts:
Not bad at all. I mean it wasn't the best of horror movies but this is definitely a good watch imo. Enjoyed the film, and even the rare jump scares are pretty good. There's a plot twist in this and it's definitely the least of your expectation. Good British horror is... /koff rare /koff but do give this one a chance.

Apparently there's quite some Easter eggs/ hints along the show, just that we didn't notice.
