What's the differences between effect pedals?, Totally confused..

I'm planning to get effect pedals but I'm confused with overdrive pedals and distortion pedals.
 What are the differences actually? And also the BOSS OS pedals and OD pedals. Sorry, first time getting an effect pedal, so I don't really know much  Any advices or suggestions? Thanks in advance! |
