optus is extremely efficient this round!

the last time during my iPhone 3GS contract with optus, it was sufficiently pleasant (but this time is admirable).

rang optus at about 3.10pm to request for an unlock and as usual provided my IMEI number.

and as per text message below, received this at 3.30pm!

at 4pm, the same bloke who attended to me rang me up to check if i have received the text message and whether i have restored my iPhone via iTunes.

voila!

kudos to optus. their network maybe patchy at times, but this experience certainly managed to put a smile on my face

double posting to update australian iPhone 4 users about the case order.
my "free" incase snap case for iPhone 4 from apple australia is finally here.

ordered this via the app, using my apple ID.

this will be an addition to my current existing apple black bumper.

Nice... How long did you waited for the casing to arrive? I have already ordered mine (smoke nude) I have to freaking wait for 1 month for it to come..... Stupid apple
*
those dates are just estimates.

it may vary from time to time.

mine definitely took less than a month for it arrive; it hasn't been a month yet since iPhone 4 arrived in australian shores

unsatisfied with optus 3G speeds (it is good overall, but still patchy at times), i decided to purchase telstra datapack and try out the 3G all the way from CBD, back home!

bear in mind that the speed below isn't obtained in CBD, but suburb.

so tempting to continue using telstra cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

i consumed close to 100MB in a single afternoon. tsk tsk tsk

*************************

on an unrelated note, apple store chadstone had (or has) stock earlier today. hence i managed to procure some.

weirdly enough that there is still a stock shortage over in sydney.

@nokia2003,
Y r U still buying iPhone 4's?  Also, I meant to ask quite a while ago - u know that picture U posted; on the top right portion there's this purple "flag" - apa makna-nya it?! wink.gif

It's been there since OS4 IINM *hehe*
*
I'll answer to that first question via another channel.

but xaw5126 is correct.

so basically any app that requires the use of your GPS, the flag will pop as an indicator

in this case, speed test needs to determine my location via GPS

made another person very happy yesterday with the iPhone 4.

met up in CBD to pass him the phone and i reckon that i should be taking a break from all this.

has anyone realised, optus' GPRS (optus doesn't support EDGE) has gotten a lot better recently?

i mean, to surf the web, i usually have to toggle the 3G or risk total "disconnection".

nowadays, GPRS is sufficient.

psychological?

Try the Apple Store on Hay St. That's your best bet for unlocked units, in fact thats the only source for unlocked units in Perth. tongue.gif

You may also wanna try Apple Resellers like Nextbyte around Perth CBD.

Safe trip, and carry island reserve fuel yah! biggrin.gif

P/S: Someone just text me from Paris stating disappointing results wi Paris iPhone hunt. He was texting from the L'Opera Apple Store in Rue Halevy. Hope you have better luck in PER.
*
AFAIK, iPhones sold by resellers are locked to networks.

they may be outright and contract free, but not unlocked.

only apple retail stores carry outright and unlocked units.

or everybody get their iphone already?

how come so less ppl?
*
1. everything in Australia is expensive. period.

2. everything has to simmer down after all the hype. I have just recently paid off my second monthly instalment and have since purchased 8 iPhone 4s for LYN peeps. surely that justifies the fact that iPhone 4 isn't as "hot" as it used to back then?

I bought the iphone online, how will Apple deliver it to me? Anyone been through this?
*
from my experience, apple australia typically contract their courier services to TNT.

word of advice, pay attention to the date stipulated.

make sure that you arrange for someone to be home, to sign for it.

is vodafone iphone locked? i did a restore..and it said 'Congratulation Your iphone is now unlocked'....so i should be fine?
*
i'm pretty sure it is locked to the vodafone network (unless you initiated an unlocking request)

it appears that way because a vodafone SIM card was plugged in, and hence it generated that message

Guys, need some help here..

I bought an ip4 from oz and it is locked under "3 mobile australia"..

any idea how to unlock it and use locally here in Malaysia? thnx..
*
your mobile was procured from "3" mobile and hence ONLY "3" can unlock it.

this can only be done by calling "3" and request for an unlock.

also do take note that, the principal line holder may need to be present in order to complete this request.

thanks! will try that again.. actually, i did asked "3" to unlock this set and "3" told me to wait a couple of days before it can be use.. now, it has been over a week but the phone still can't read the sim.. sad.gif
*
you will need to restore the phone for the unlocking process to complete.

make sure that you are connected to the net throughout the restoration.

Ok.. Now i've tried using "3" sim card and I can sync the ip but when i change back to digi it reads "The SIM Card Inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported"
*
if you are certain that you are restored your iPhone correctly (from what iTunes tells you).

then "3" hasn't unlocked your unit yet. you will need to call them again.

this is why i refuse to be a "3" customer; their service (both customer and coverage) doesn't meet my requirement/threshold

hi, i will be going to Melbourne soon and will be there for the next few years, would like to ask your opinion what will be the best telco for using iphone? i mean by data coverage and customer service

i already have an iphone but thinking of getting an iphone 4 for my wife in melbourne, please advise.. based on nokia2003 comment it seems that 3 is out, i have been in uk and been using O2 payngo (prepaid) on my iphone and was very satisfied with it, where i paid 10pound and get unlimited internet and 300 msg.

and is it easy to get an iphone 4 in melbourne? or there is still a waiting period

please advise

thank you in advance
*
these scenarios are based on the assumption hat you are gonna open a contract (and not on prepaid)

if you can really afford it, go for telstra (bundled credit doesn't include international calls and international texts)

next best thing is, optus (bundled credit doesn't include international calls but includes international texts)

"3" and vodafone have joined venture into a single entity and hence their bundles pretty much mimic one another. but given a choice, opt for vodafone over "3" if possible (bundled credit for "3" and vodafone include both international calls and international texts).

additional information: virgin mobile & TPG run on the optus network and crazy john mobile runs on the vodafone network

Added on October 19, 2010, 8:21 pmiPhone procurement: there is no more waiting period for outright purchases from apple store but networks still cannot get their hands on the units as fast as demand.

New students can't get Optus cause Optus will reject you, you'll have to go for other brands although Optus offers the best deals.
*
really? for this new iPhone 4 that I have with optus, it was signed on a new contract.

on the student visa of course

You can go on a contract with Optus as in international student, but in most cases the salesperson will have to call India to get an override approval for the credit check.

They are, however, extremely strict on the minimum criteria for international students. The expiry date of your student visa must be after the expiry date of your contract. Sometimes they require an additional 2 months, so if your contract duration is 24 months, as a rule of thumb they require your visa to be valid for 26 months. If you are currently doing pre-U and plan on going to Uni after but only have a visa valid for a year, you can forget about it. They will also require proof of income/allowance from parents, bank statements, etc. In some cases they may also limit you to plans that are below a certain value, say $49, which makes it rather difficult to obtain high value phones on instalment. There is a ton of ID that you need to bring, best to check with the store beforehand.

Any iPhone issued by a carrier will be sim locked, including contract units purchased from Apple. The only unlocked iPhones are those purchased outright (ie. prepaid units) from Apple.

Carriers can unlock the phone for you, I don't know what the charges are but last I heard Telstra unlock fees were pretty expensive. Sometimes it takes several weeks, usually it's done in a few days. The carrier needs to put a request through to Apple to update the registry so that your phone is unlocked. After that, you need to restore your phone so iTunes can unlock it.
*
let me add a few more information:

telstra's unlocking fee is AUD150 (however if you are an existing telstra customer with other telstra products, for example broadband, landline, tv et cetera, telstra may at its discretion waive the unlocking fee for you)

i'm pleased to say that the unlocking processes for most major networks are almost instantaneous.

hence even if you haven't receive the confirmation text message, you can actually proceed to restore your iPhone via iTunes after two business days.
