AT least it's a one-shot deal. The other option, Gokivo, tricks you into thinking it is USD0.99, when in fact you need to re-subscribe within the app itself (In-App Purchase, thanks OS 3.0! mad.gif) for USD9.99 per month to keep using it. Daylight robbery in action.

Gokivo gives you updated maps, so you get monthly updates which isn't so bad. $120 per year is a bit higher than $95 but you get new POIs, updated roads etc.

Personally though I've been using Garmin GPSes since 2005 and I plan to stick to it since the free Malaysian maps are great.

String, Malsingmaps is now the official Malaysian map provider for Garmin devices so at this point in time it's free and officially sanctioned by Garmin. They've even taken advantage of features like junction view on new Garmin devices. I have personally moved to malfreemaps though and have not looked back biggrin.gif

Personally I still stick with my Garmin standalone devices for several reasons. My Nuvi has a bigger screen than my iPhone (4.3" vs. 3.5"). I'd go for even bigger screens if it weren't so prohibitively expensive. Second for outside car use my old handheld Garmin 60Cx is far more rugged than the iPhone. I have nothing against convergence but the Garmins I have are just far more optimized for what they do than the iPhone for now.

Fair enough. But tell me this. If hypothetically, the features on the iPhone catches up on the Garmin, would you be inclined to consider the iPhone a suitable GPS Nav candidtate?

Yep, I'm open to using the iPhone as a GPS, particularly a handheld one. Again I have no problems with convergence, the only problems I see with the iPhone as a GPS device are physical ones ie. screen size and ruggedness. None of them unfortunately can be fixed with software...

The key to gadget-purchasing is never to let it go beyond its "expiry date". That way, the price to let go for will always remain high, or high enough for you not to spend so much on the next similar purchase. icon_rolleyes.gif

Ah... words of wisdom from the gadget king. I do understand the expiry date issue, I've been doing it with my Macs which is why I'm Macbook less at the moment. biggrin.gif

@tink unfortunately for you I don't do the lottery, but I do submit my Shell contest forms! RM30k is nothing to sneeze at tongue.gif

Guys I'm still here in KL. Plane broke down <...>

Never a good thing to hear that from the pilot/first officer biggrin.gif I had that one time flying the EWR-ARN-KUL 3-4 years ago. That wasn't fun.

OT why the Olympus Pen? I like the concept, have always liked rangefinder style cameras but the lack of a built in flash is turning me off.

More on topic how is the battery life for the 3GS owners out there? Mine went down 8% in 3 hours with about 5 SMS, minor wifi use and no calls. I was expecting much better battery capacity than that...
