Land based cars would still be the more practical option at least for now. With current aviation propulsion method. Strapping propeller/jet on a car isn't practical not to mention dangerous. Not exactly easy to navigate in between buildings and 90 degree turn if you're flying around really really fast. I know people who can't navigate land based car properly, what's more one that's flying around really fast Taking human out of the equation sounds like the right thing to do, but automation are meant to assist, not replace human(Which is why we still have pilot on aircraft, autopilot on aircraft can actually fly the entire plane by itself), at the end human still need to learn how to 'drive' a flying car. Oh and of course, flying require more energy and failure of simple component simply mean you'll crash and burn At least in car, not all failure are catastrophic.
