Those are Jaring's DNS servers, i think jaring block TMNet users, but it takes like 20/30 mins before it kicks you out, just switch the server. Its just a temporary fix if u really cant access thru tm's DNS

OR u can use

ns2.p1.com.my-----122.255.96.133

P1 Wimax DNS(secondary). I'm not providing the main DNS so that we do not overcrowd their service.

What I noticed about OpenDNS is it dosen't seem to like Google.
Google loads slow on Open DNS.

I've updated first page

Yes sites may load slow on OpenDNS due to the fact that it takes 200-300ms to contact the DNS sever itself , however its very reliable !

edit-deleted quote

hey, if possible...take down the 1st DNS, as it is P1's primary DNS...if we all use the primary DNS, it will be overloaded and end up like streamyx's DNS. just use the 2nd one should be good enough

edit- thanks for taking it down

Weird situation, speed was slow. THEN....

RADIUS server down, DNS unreachable...

But when using other DNS, speed was at maximum...

Any hypothesis on what happened? ...

Mine (hater's view) : Because RADIUS had failed and DNS overload, TM engineers panic and thought that by turning off the throttling will help improve the situation. but it did not. however, we the SMART ones used other DNS and managed to take advantage of their "off-throttling"

OR

(positive view)
They really are finally giving us what we pay for ; )

C the difference? Look at the time and date.

But my throttle is still at 1.5mbps.

Guys, when you change DNS IP, dun forget to flush.

start>run>cmd.exe

then

ipconfig /flushdns

nope. it will take some time for a website to load since the latency to opendns is higher than local dns. the ping you saw is direct ping to the test site.

In this case mine is 1024Kbps.
Never had 1536Kbps.

1024Kbps minus overheads equals 800Kbps-900Kbps.
Which sucks.

You want to know why we are getting fast speed

It's because the whole of Malaysia Streamyx users got DNS problem, how many of them will know it's a DNS problem if they do not come here and see our threads? Those people will only know if it get through TM's call center and are informed by TM. Come on, even in the main page of this forum,, it says..."Most users ever online was 4,779 on May 4 2009, 10:46 PM"

Malaysia has how many thousands/million? of streamyx users. We are getting fast speed because we are switching to another DNS. While the rest that dont know its a DNS problem will not be able to connect and use the bandwidth. Thats why, we are actually using the extra bandwidth that is left by those users that cant connect or did not change their DNS

Your line appears to be capped at 2043kbps however, since you said you are on 1mbps package, I think yours is capped based on your username instead of your line.

ow really?
but why when i done speedtest to server in kl, i only managed to get +1.5MBps but not up to 2??
n when i change to california server, it drops down to 0.2 n below!!!
(yes i know, screamyx speed is based only for local websites but not the international)

below is the main point:
while my results compare to others LYN who had test the speed to CA can get much better with the same package as mine..
n that is the reason why im asking abt this.. laugh.gif

Of course lor, local server gives fast speed. The reason you get so low is because of numerous factors like bad routing, bad IP and so on. Even I sometimes get that too, so no worries about that and just hope for the best la smile.gif

Like I said, it depends on numerous factors, it can be routing issues within the local server to the international link. Sometimes it can also be your copper wire attenuation that affects the quality of your signal.

It does have plenty of advantage. On normal browsing and stuff maybe you won't feel it that much. But if you direct download something, the speed you get will almost be at full(1.5). Do a speedtest at streamyx.com. The speed you get there, is the max you can get if you download anywhere.

but then i only managed to get below 0.2+ MBps to servers in US, n it means my DD will be approximately around 100-200KBps rite?
i never had any opportunity to get over than 0.25 MBps..
what's the hit if only can get 2.0 MBps to local server since most of DD not came from any of it..
correct me pls

as u can see, my upload speed is much greater than the down speed:

These 'slow' speed means nothing. It just means that it's kinda slow browsing those websites. Like I said before, if you direct download something using a download manager, usually you'll get a fast speed.

It's like watching a youtube video on your browser. Most of the time it loads slow. But if you copy the youtube link, go to keepvid.com, paste the youtube link there, copy the link that came up after that, then paste the link from keepvid.com page into your download manager, the speed you'll get will be a lot faster.

anyone tried replacing streamyx default DNS with the ones found in http://www.opendns.com/
opendns is free and it might help when streamyx connection is down due to local DNS problems

Your request will be routed to OpenDNS. You can check whether you're using OpenDNS via this dynamic image:

I've just spent some time researching on the IP addresses that i got:

Why is the 115.134.x.x ISP name, CORE IP NETWORK DEVELOPMENT?

user posted image

While the others like 60.x, 124.x and 118.x are all under TELEKOM MALAYSIA BERHAD. Does anyone knows the difference?

Talking about the DSL Downstream rate.. my modem has always been showing a pathetic 1024.. but just now i was like shocking.gif when i saw the Downstream rate was 4000+ and Upstream rate was 800+ !!!

No joke, for the first time i saw something like that and i was too slow to print screen.. but only a few seconds later the DSL light blinked and reconnected.. the numbers went back to normal cry.gif I have no idea what happened and how i wished i could get the 4MB status out of error lolx laugh.gif

I really have no idea why my friends and my cousin who is living in another area nearby can get the 1.5MB status while miine is still stucked at 1MB.. why?? vmad.gif

By the way, can anyone who's using DLINK DSL-520B explain to me why the DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server are shown as 192.168.1.1? Aren't they supposed to be showing something like 202.188.0.133 and 202.188.1.5?? rclxub.gif

There is no official "1.5 Mbps" package. So if anyone is getting 1.5 Mbps under a 1 Mbps plan, he/she is lucky wink.gif

Anyway, to explain the D-Link DNS: Your router (whose IP address is 192.168.1.1) acts as a DNS relay. The DNS relay's job is to listen on port 53 (within the local network), and forward all DNS requests from clients within the network to the upstream DNS server (in this case, the Streamyx DNS server). When your computer attempts to resolve a domain name, it will forward the request to your router, and your router in turn forwards the request to the Streamyx DNS server. Once the Streamyx DNS server passed the answer back to your router, your router will in turn pass the answer back to your computer.

This has few functions. Your router can act as a DNS cache. This means that your router will keep a list of recently resolved DNS queries so that your computer can obtain DNS answers more quickly (less latency). Another function is that you won't have to reconfigure all the computers within your network if you change your upstream DNS servers.

Hope this helps smile.gif

Thanks CK for the opendns config guide.

I am using LinkSys WAG200G router/modem. I followed the guide and key in opendns ip into Static DNS 1 & 2 followed by save.
Switch to the Status tab and do a disconnect and connect. However its still showing the old streamyx DNS server:

Default Gateway:219.93.218.177
DNS1:202.188.0.133
DNS2:202.188.1.5

I tried powering off the router and shut down my PC. Turn router power on again and reboot PC(WinXP).
Still status show the same above.
What did I do wrong with configuration?
Do I need to config DNS on my PC?
Any help esp. from WAG200G user who happen to use OpenDNS server would be much appreciate.
Thanks

Andrew,
Thanks for your advise. I config it on my computer and it confirmed on opendns site.
What if I use other DNS server like Jaring or P1.
How to check and confirm the key in DNS server are being connected?
In case of opendns, we can use their site to check. For others, how and what software are available to check DNS server being used?
In case of streamyx, 202.188.0.133 is always primary and 202.188.1.5 is secondary.
Can this be change to make 202.188.1.5 primary as this has less packet lost?
Thanks

Just config it on your computer, if you can load pages after that, means the DNS is working.

http://www.infoarch.net/s_broadband.htm ... a page of all DNS to use in this region

HOWEVER, Jaring DNS has blocked non Jaring users, do using Jaring DNS you will not get good conenctivity. P1 DNS also, only their 1st DNS responds to non P1 users now. all other p1 DNS do no respond to outsiders.

that is because that website blocks ICMP pings, same goes with www.hotmail.com....

If a website is pingable, but shows some packet loss, then it has problems

If a website is pingable and show 100% PL, but accesible, that means it is blocking pings.

Ig a website is not pingable and canot access..means its DOWN

i don' think this is true 100% of the time. my network admin at the office just showed me that its also possible to limit pings...according to him this is a common security practice. i goggled around and found this

One obvious application of rate limiting on incoming traffic is to block ping flooding. We can obviously block ping floods with a rule blocking incoming echo-request ICMP packets altogether, but this is inelegant; this is linux, remember? What we want to do, rather, is to allow such packets but only in small quantities. Have a look at the relevant rule:

iptables -A INPUT -p ICMP -icmp-type echo-request -m limit -limit 1/minute -limit-burst 5 -j ACCEPT

-limit 1/minute will do what it says; it will only match for a rate of incoming packets up to an average of 1 per minute. The operative word here is average. So, does this mean that the first ping request you get will be accepted, then none for a whole minute? Not quite.

-limit-burst 5 tells iptables to let 5 such packets in before permitting the rule to match; so, in one minute, we can have 5 ping requests popping through. So, -limit 1/minute permits a maximum of 1 packet per minute on average, but -limit-burst 5 permits 5 in one shot. Have we found a logical error in iptables? No you silly clod, remember, -limit stes a limit on average, whereas -limit-burst limits by number of packets in one go. What will happen then in our example?

The firewall will let the first 5 packets in in the first minute, thanks to -limit-burst 5; this means, however, that the packets/minute now is 5, so any further packets are blocked until packets/minute = 1, i.e. 5 minutes later. In the sixth minute, packets/minute will be 5/6 < 1, so another ping request will be let in. When the extra ping request is admitted, the ratio becomes 6/6 = 1 again, and packets are DROPped again until the next minute. Again, average is the operative word.

for the case of tmnut, it can either really be an issue or they are just being paranoid and have an archaic filter up. as for me, i've tried both the default tm dns and open dns and so far have not noticed any noticeable differences. i *have* however noticed that tm's servers somehow give better performance for facebook liao. let's just hope that this is no fluke and that tm is finally waking up!

Andrew,
Thank you for your usefull and detail explaination.
My question on:
In case of streamyx, 202.188.0.133 is always primary and 202.188.1.5 is secondary.
Can this be change to make 202.188.1.5 primary as this has less packet lost?
Any inputs on this?
Thanks again for your help and have a nice day.

i don' think this is true 100% of the time. my network admin at the office just showed me that its also possible to limit pings...according to him this is a common security practice. i goggled around and found this
*
yes but only a very small amount of webpages practice this method.

Yes, just input 202.188.1.5 into the box @ preferred DNS server when you change your DNS through computer. It will be then used as the primary DNS for your connections.

Then you can also input another non-TM DNS (like OPENDNS) at the alternate DNS server box.

I have 2 DNS servers that i have been using for years without any problems.

203.115.225.24
203.115.225.25

These are NTT Public DNS servers, which is less likely to face problems. Speeds are fast the all the time.

nice DNS there... thanks... using it now...

but it blocks ICMP pings, so we wont be able to tell if it's having problems or not... and also to check the latency... =\

I tried the Google Open DNS for a few days, it work good! Personally feel less modem reset and page not found problem.
Anyway, the ping time for Google Open DNS respond time not as fast as TMNet DNS respond time. Thus, I put 1 Google DNS, and another 1 put TMNet DNS.

yo guys, wanna thank you for telling me about Google dns.
it improved my surfing time by 100% or more.
very fast now. no more 3-7 seconds delay like last time.

and the big thing is, YOUTUBE.COM is soooooO much faster now.
i never have to wait or pause for vid to load.

btw, i was having high ping / latency (fluctuating; 30ms to 200ms) for a 4MBPS connection (streamyx uni cool pack).

now ping is reduced considerably. to like 100ms or lower every time i test it.

wrapping this up, thank you very much for telling me about google dns. it's much faster. will update for any changes. if not, google dns is the best.

Sorry for being a n00b but just a few days ago, I've been having trouble surfing at home and I'm not sure if it's Screamyx or TMNut's barely 1-year old Riger Modem... Here's an example of my situation:

Turn on computer > Access GMail / Yahoo! Mail = OK. Facebook = Cannot.
Restart Modem > Access Facebook / GMail = OK. Yahoo! Mail = Cannot. (Or very slow in loading)
Restart Modem > GMail / Facebook / Yahoo! Mail = OK... After 30mins or so, cannot load or very slow in loading webpage

If I restart the modem again, it might go back to the first situation. Some websites that I normally visit either cannot load or load extremely slow that it gives up. I've tried all, Firefox / IE / Google Chrome, same results for the websites I'm trying to access. But when I'm at the office, no problem.

I called up TMNut, said my line was fine. What to do? icon_question.gif

That Riger modem is a dog that has to be put down.. with an interface so needlessly complicated and difficult for newbs to configure and to figure out anything, you're better off with another combo modem/router with a more user-friendly interface..

Get something like a D-Link 2640T for cheap... good cheap and reliable router thats easy to configure.. first thing i did when i got mah Broadband... ditched the PITA Riger...

The thing is, I've been using it for almost a year and it hasn't given me any problems until just these past few days (after a major thunderstorm)... Right now, my speeds are still good but webpage wise, I can't really view a lot of different webpages. So, is it actually a modem problem then? Or just some lousy Streamyx issue?

it's clearly an streamyx issue and you all advise JessCC to change modem/router ? lol

I have 2 SDSL line in office and having same problem as JessCC since Monday. Both SDSL line having problems loading certain page. The worst is line 1, cannot load google and yahoo.

Called 1800 multiple times and at last they use the excuse that they are having service maintanence at our area.

Maintanence since when ? Don't know.

Maintanence will take how long ? Don't know.

WTF did they know ?

THANK YOU!! You make me feel less alone! rclxm9.gif

The only problem is, there is no maintenance going on in my area (or so they say) and they said my line is OK. I told them, I want to make a report so that the technician can come in and they said, cannot because the line is OK on their side. At the end, I forced them to make a report, now waiting for technician... I have one line that can load Google and another that cannot... No clue which is which and what is wrong. And yes, since Monday. vmad.gif

Told me they are looking into it and hopefully get things sorted by this week. We shall see... shakehead.gif

Guys..Why did you use opendns. Not everyone obtain same result. Find your closest Dns. The nearer dns resolver to your place the speedier your dns can resolve. That's why some find p1 dns is speedier. Run dnsbench to find which dns is better for u. I found googledns and p1 work better for my streamyx

Hi guys, which DNS servers you prefer?
With 202.188.1.5 as primary DNS server and 202.188.0.133 for alternate, i can get a stable average download speed for 1Mbps package which is around 150kb+/s (Orbit Downloader Software).

People who are using other DNS server, please give some comments on how good your connection are?

Thank you. thumbup.gif

Download speed is not directly related the DNS server availability

1.) If you don't mind using a command line, then "Ipconfig /all" and check out the DNS Servers string.

2.) Set it at your network adapter's TCP/IP properties page.

Generally, yes unless it's a dodgy server which can be compromised. It justs translates the sitenames to IP addresses. Been using Google's DNS for ages now, no issues.

Hi,

Google or Open DNS haven't been working for me quite a while.

I can ping them -> eg. google

$ ping 8.8.8.8

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=56
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=56
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=56
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=56

It works for "unblocked" sites naturally

$ nslookup bbc.co.uk
Non-authoritative answer:
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

Name: bbc.co.uk
Addresses: 212.58.254.251
212.58.254.252

but does not work as advertised with blocked ones ...

$ nslookup megavideo.com
*** Request to google timed-out
Server: google
Address: 8.8.8.8

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

and ... tracert seems to end in

$ tracert 8.8.8.8

Tracing route to google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms <1 ms login.router [192.168.1.1]
2 8 ms 8 ms 7 ms 219.93.218.177
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.
6 * * * Request timed out.
----

Well it does so with any given site ... so what do we have wrong here - anyone ?

Cheers,
W

Hi guys i have been facing a weird problem this past few days.Im getting cut off from the internet with the "Authentication Failure" .

Here is what have:
streamyx 1mb, xp sp3, dsl-2640B modem(the one tm gave), im using a wired connection, ive also disabled my wireless and im using a static ip.

Saturday 21 Jan
The problem starts when among the 4 led lights on the modem, the one for the "internet" goes red. i checked my router page and it says "authentication failure" as per below attached image.so gave the 100 a call and asked whats wrong?(was my bill due or such)but they can seem to point whats wrong.)so they sent a technician over, and he checked every thing, the phone line was ok, the ports was ok, and but still im getting the same error and cant surf the net.

he tried resetting the router, doing the "internet set up" and still the same(we also switched off the router, and my pc too, then turning on every thing but still the same).he then used a modem he brought and the connection was ok, i could surf.so he told me my router rosak.but all my indicator leds were functioning except the one for the "internet" wch was normally yellow is red.

some how i was sceptical this was a modem problem, and while i was thinking whether to get a new modem or not, i just tried turning off the modem, then switching it on again and suddenly the connection was fine. rclxub.gif .thinking its ok now.

Monday 23 january.
i woke up in the afternoon, and wanted to surf, i cant.the problem wch occurred 2 days earlier was back.again i was getting the red light, and checked the router status page and got that very same "authentication failed".after tweaking countless time, setting up the "internet setup" and all other things for almost a day, it was still the same.i even rebooted the router to factory settings, and did the setup again but to avail.

Tuesday 24 January.
today, all of a sudden it was ok.so now im very confused.is the problem is with my router?or my account??or my password that i put in the setup on the router page??

oh before i forget, during all these problems, the prior night there was heavy rain in my area.does this have anything to do??(i off my router, pc when heavy rains, and unplug the power and telephone line to the router)

so what should i do know??change the modem??or its some thing wrong with my streamyx account??

Try changing your password. Maybe someone is using your account, and that's why you couldn't login.

OpenDNS is safe to use, but it will not make your downloads, torrents, etc go any faster or slower. DNS is used to just translate from a name to an IP address (eg: www.xxx.com = 4.4.4.4) and normally happens within miliseconds.

downloading movie slow does not have anything to do with DNS. DNS does not have the capability to cap speed.

It seems both OpenDNS and Google DNS didn't work for me since yesterday. Has anyone got this problem?

Got a shocked when my router Primary DNS has changed to 91.194.254.105
I know I didn't change to this DNS, all this while I've been using google dns.
Anyone experiencing this before?

It's sooo strange

Is this a TM's modem? I notice that my default DNS changed from 202.188.0.133 to 1.9.1.9. So I suspect that TM can remotely update the DNS setting in the modem.

i am no expert in this field but here is my take
i used google dns and on sundays, i find that i am not able to surf. after resetting to use back the default dns in the router, everything goes back to normal.
tm is using dns to block sites, and to control this, they tell users that only the modem and routers that supply can be used for unifi.
notice how they dont provide you with your xxx@unifi password? maybe to prevent you from setting up unifi on another router?
did some reading and they probably use tr069 to remotely change your dns as in above replies.
probably use this tr069 to block you from surfing if you are using another dns server.

i dont know man.

It could be one of the reason to ease the TM technical support to help their customer also.

You got method to check your password, just use the inspect element in your Firefox. Change the "password" to "text" then your password will reveal. If you really want to know, you can call TM directly, tell them you want to change new router yourself. They will confirm your identity if you are the owner of the account.

It seems like tm are not well come google dns.
I face this kind of issue on these days.
Sometimes shows no network connection issue. After few second it back to normal.
Same as wechat and line, frequently show no connect to the server.
