QUOTE(JessCC @ Aug 25 2010, 05:53 PM)
Sorry for being a n00b but just a few days ago, I've been having trouble surfing at home and I'm not sure if it's Screamyx or TMNut's barely 1-year old Riger Modem... Here's an example of my situation:

Turn on computer > Access GMail / Yahoo! Mail = OK. Facebook = Cannot.
Restart Modem > Access Facebook / GMail = OK. Yahoo! Mail = Cannot. (Or very slow in loading)
Restart Modem > GMail / Facebook / Yahoo! Mail = OK... After 30mins or so, cannot load or very slow in loading webpage

If I restart the modem again, it might go back to the first situation. Some websites that I normally visit either cannot load or load extremely slow that it gives up. I've tried all, Firefox / IE / Google Chrome, same results for the websites I'm trying to access. But when I'm at the office, no problem.

I called up TMNut, said my line was fine. What to do?  icon_question.gif

Guys..Why did you use opendns. Not everyone obtain same result. Find your closest Dns. The nearer dns resolver to your place the speedier your dns can resolve. That's why some find p1 dns is speedier. Run dnsbench to find which dns is better for u. I found googledns and p1 work better for my streamyx

Is the DNS for Streamyx down now? Keep requesting timed out, web pages hard to load, especially images and international sites

Hi guys, which DNS servers you prefer?
With 202.188.1.5 as primary DNS server and 202.188.0.133 for alternate, i can get a stable average download speed for 1Mbps package which is around 150kb+/s (Orbit Downloader Software).

People who are using other DNS server, please give some comments on how good your connection are?

Thank you. thumbup.gif

Download speed is not directly related the DNS server availability

1.) If you don't mind using a command line, then "Ipconfig /all" and check out the DNS Servers string.

2.) Set it at your network adapter's TCP/IP properties page.

Generally, yes unless it's a dodgy server which can be compromised. It justs translates the sitenames to IP addresses. Been using Google's DNS for ages now, no issues.

Hi,

Google or Open DNS haven't been working for me quite a while.

I can ping them -> eg. google

$ ping 8.8.8.8

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=56
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=56
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=56
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=56

It works for "unblocked" sites naturally

$ nslookup bbc.co.uk
Non-authoritative answer:
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

Name: bbc.co.uk
Addresses: 212.58.254.251
212.58.254.252

but does not work as advertised with blocked ones ...

$ nslookup megavideo.com
*** Request to google timed-out
Server: google
Address: 8.8.8.8

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

and ... tracert seems to end in

$ tracert 8.8.8.8

Tracing route to google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms <1 ms login.router [192.168.1.1]
2 8 ms 8 ms 7 ms 219.93.218.177
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.
6 * * * Request timed out.
----

Well it does so with any given site ... so what do we have wrong here - anyone ?

Cheers,
W
