really need plenty of help out here....

i am in the mist of searching for the best AV receiver in its respective price range....... ( must have the ability to support HD-DTS, and also up-sampling from component, s-video to 1080p.. budgeting around 3k but if can get better SQ and PQ really don't mind forking out a little bit more if its worth the $$$$

--best of 4k range
--bets of 5k range

i am shortlisting Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer and Onkyo ( the Sei Tai Tien Wong)

my preference must also include quality audio as i have a dedicated CD Player and a Dvico to play lossless Flac

Also is it better to use the same speaker package, or mix and match, what i actually mean is, if i use a quality speaker for mains i am afraid, i am afraid it will not produce that good a sound quality as compared to a integrated ..... so it will be waste..... or is it....?????

I think u will get different opinions from different people. Better you google for reviews on the models listed and come to your own conclusion. Also do try to audition them if you can.

hmm..... its really a tough decision,

hopefully this coming AV fair 24th to 26th July, will help me source for one

and ... fingers crossed.....new models will be launched too

and also.... is it true that prices given by desa are parallel import models...???? or are they really clearing stock??

If you want good music, always go for stereo amp. Somehow AV amp is lacking in music department. I bought a Jungson Class A amp which is quite good and around RM 2k.

My simple solution,
Buy good speaker set with medium AVR or the best speaker set with flagship AVR. Don't waste your fund for high end AVR if your speaker only entry level range.

AVR not really excellent in music, cheaper Class A amp like Audiolab or Musical Fidelity (used price RM1k+) simply could produce excellent musical sound. Not many AVR produce musical sound, my Yamaha THX AVR produce very clean & flat sound, my Onkyo 905 produce warm, detail & bright sound, my friend Denon Flagship, Sherwood 965 set & Marantz SR18 produce clean, detail & good musical (average). Normally we test the sound quality with Tannoy Dualconcentric fullrange speaker (very high sensitivity 95+db). This is only my small experienced.

My advise try audition latest Marantz SR6k or SR7k and Yamaha 800series with good speaker package like Klipsch or Wharfadale.

How do you define whether speakers are good, best or entry level?

As you know AVR price range is quite narrow, from 1k+ for entry level to about 7k+ can be considered near the top. But for speaker sets the price range is huge, top end ones are like tens of thousands.

This is an art. You need to do speaker matching with amp. If you can get a hifi company to loan you the equipment to test at home, this is your best option.

I beg to differ bro. Its better to have a higher end amp and low end speakers rather than having higher end speakers but with amp not powerful enuf to support them.

It might go both ways i guess .. lower end AVR just to decode. Great speakers .. Power amps to drive them .. syok.

ends just have to meet .. balance would be the best choice. Klipsch are easy to drive and it ain't that expensive to delivery such performance.

As for the word "Best AVR within 3/4/5K" i guess it'll never end.
AVR goes out date pretty fast now a days, but getting a decent one should get you going.

My choice would be here .. 3K budget .. just get the 6003 .. if 4K get the 1900. anyway 3K AVR should do you good for some time. spend the 2K extra for a better sub ..

But I don't believe in final purchases .. it'll get replaced by time.

i was told the Pioneer LX series 50/51, is the only avr range that is designed for good surround and stereo playback, is it true...??
can any one confirm/tested to support the facts....?????

But...... the LX50/51 is already obsolete, the next shipment of new models expected sept/oct (TBA)

was also advice the best... is Quality AVR with Quality Speakers, but if tight on budget split the $$$ and go for cheaper AVR but quality Speakers........... as the speakers is the last output that produce the sonics.....

but have any sifu's really compared between yamaha, denon, onkyo, pioneer, marantz to see which is the best value for money in its class.

i see a dvico...is that a 4100 or 6500?

No exact rules there. But for me, speakers sld be abt double or more than the price of AV rcvr.

I tought the rule of thumb is spend around 30% of your budget on your AVR and then 70% of the rest on speakers?

Besides, the tech of AVR always change, while good speakers set can be use for long time?

Speaker > Amp > Cable. Speaker normally will give you the most sonic benefit.

My experience it the critical thing in obtaining good sound is amp to speaker matching.

Sometimes and budget amp (standalone) paired with higher end speakers sound great, sometimes entry level speakers with mid level amp is better.

The one thing to watch out for would be the speaker sensitivity and the amp current. If well matched, the amp can drive the speakers efficiently and sound will not be strained. Well balanced.

Good AMP + Good Speaker = Good System= Happy!!!
