ASUS Brings High Definition Entertainment to the Living Room with the O!Play HDP-R1 HD Media Player
The Easiest Way to Stream and Enjoy a Wide Range of High Definition Content on Large-screen TVs at Home

Taipei, Taiwan, June 2, 2009 – ASUS, the leading provider of intelligent and innovative home theater PC solutions, announced today the first member of its new O!Play Series digital media player line: the O!Play HDP-R1 HD Media Player. Aimed at providing stunning 1080p Full High Definition entertainment across a wide variety of media formats, the O!Play HDP-R1 HD Media Player boasts several exclusive features—such as a Music Shuffle feature and ultra-fast eSATA interface—for the best living room digital entertainment experience.

Stunning Full HD 1080p Resolution and Vast File Format Support

The O!Play HDP-R1 is currently the world's only High Definition media player which supports an extremely wide range of file formats, including MPEG1/2/4, H.264, VC-1, and the popular RM/RMVB. With the O!Play HDP-R1, users can share their videos and photos instantly from their PCs and notebooks in enhanced clarity and high definition with friends, family and colleagues—all in the comfort of their living rooms or conference rooms.
Exclusive Music Shuffle Feature for One-touch Music Playback

The O!Play HDP-R1 is the first high definition media player to provide a music shuffle function via a dedicated button on the remote control. With a simple touch of a button, the O!Play HDP-R1 collates all the music files in storage and then starts playing the music in random order. With the music shuffle function, users can enjoy their tunes both instantly and effortlessly without having to manually import any music files into the O!Play HDP-R1.
Exclusive eSATA Support—6 Times Faster than USB 2.0

While high definition content delivers stunning images, it also requires huge bandwidth to render the image quality to perfection. With the exclusive eSATA interface on the O!Player HDP-R1, users can experience up to 6 times faster transfer speeds* as compared to USB 2.0, virtually eliminating any delays in delivering high definition entertainment to the user.
Easy Access to Networked Content with LAN Support

The O!Player HDP-R1 is equipped with LAN support which allows users to stream their files effortlessly from their PCs—doing away with manual transfers of multimedia data from one device to another. Users can simply download and keep the multimedia files in their notebooks or PCs and still be able to enjoy them through the O!Player HDP-R1, be it in the living room or study.

Definitely better than the WDTv as it supports RMVB which is still missing on the WDTV. Hope that is can playback all my mkv without any problems and it will be is my shopping list.

Yes it is much better than WDTV

Supports the following that WDTV lacks
RMVB playback
eSATA HDD
LAN connection.

Can't wait to know the prices.

what about direct USB play? WDTV can do that. Imagine you borrowed a Terabyte HDD from a friend and wants to play the video files in the Maxtor External harddisk. Can you just connect the external HDD to OPlayer and play the files? Dun tell me u have to connect it to your PC and stream the files 'effortlessly' to the OPlayer!

Support usb dvd drive would be fantastic. Are you sure as most media player available now does not have this support.

I check some website said the price might set around 119 Euro. After convert to RM, it should cost around RM590. If this news is true, i will buy this media player instead of WD, which still lack to support RM/RMVB video format.

Agreed. Will definitely put off buying a WDTV until this is launched. The RMVB support is definitely a must have feature which is sorely missed in the WDTV

Accordingly to XTreamer website, it uses more advance Realtek chip 1283(x)than AsusO!Play 1073 chip... That is one solid reason that attracts me...

the egreat has got sata and sata power to power a 3.5inch HDD without a power brick.. that's even more impressive.. thumbup.gif

There is no digital coaxial audio output, which I feel is quite important. Not everyone uses optical.

I couldn't wait for this O!Play and purchased the Clamul 1080p MovieBox. From my observation, there are almost identical in features except that there are only 2 additional features in O!play which differs

1. LAN conectivity
2. eSata connectivity

Wait if you want but there is always something newer and better coming out so there is no end to waiting....

Some1 in the Clamul thread mentioned about compatibility of MKV files. The Clamul cant play quite a number of MKV files, depending on codec used. But then , Clamul is a good deal for its price la...
Wondering if O!Play has the same issue.
Now i'm considering a mini-HTPC instead, can load in what ever codecs. flex.gif

The Asus site http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=sPkR...Yl5K&templete=2 on it also did not mention the chipset it is using but I would guess it is on realtek. With its RRP circa USD100, WDTV is gonna kena tapao. Waiting eagerly for it to arrive in our market brows.gif

-can't place hdd inside

If i am not mistaken its the same chipset as the Xtreamer and the Playon!HD so playback performance should be the same except for the interface.

If it can sell at WDTV price, then its really a great player.

The Asus player look like egreat brand (1073).  might same oem

while, asus has way more chances to get faster/better/more complete supports on the firmware, we all know that these media player can throw to sea if does not have a good firmware.

Realtek 1073 max ram support upto 128mb. chipset limitation , can't increase .
That why feel lag in U.I , and online tv & BT run not smooth.

new chipset 1083 start implement already tongue.gif

TELECHIP 1080p (ARM11) also release end of oct. might get first

it seems o!play is binary compatible with, wl500g router which mean we able to use wl500g application in o!play.. NZB downloading seems a nice add on for me.. + they are in the middle to try use xtreamer player rather than asus.. dunno why, maybe more functions.

客廳高畫質影像中樞-ASUS O!Play HD

Added on October 10, 2009, 11:52 amSpecification :

Added on October 10, 2009, 11:52 am

But selling price is already known, it will be RM699 (he'd checked in their POS system). sad.gif sad.gif

Try a shorter USB cable...yes, length does matters

Yes, I too have encountered this before. Plugging my 2.5" HDD via a USB hub, cannot run. Plug direct to the USB port, can run sweat.gif

Use powered USB Hub..I'm using the Belkin brand.

FAQ
About the SATA Hot Swappable HDD Cage
The SATA back panel didn’t have any chip or micro processor, It will require motherboard or SATA raid card to enable the hot swap and Raid features.

Thanks for the heads up on the fine print. Suppose ATE and KAROM selling it.
So I should get the hotplug sata card, to plug in the HDD in the EX-H34B instead on direct onto the mobo?

I believe this is being generated by a bad cable and there is some leakage in ur whole system, typically I would suspect that the leakage is occuring from the Astro video cable that is being hooked up to ur display. Also I would think that ur display is also hooked up in another input/output to the aVR and to other equipment, so u r getting leakage to ur other components. When u touch the metallic components u are essentially providing a ground loop that allows the electricity to flow and u get the "shock". Check ur cables, one of ur cables is bad. Also ground the Astro well. This is normally the cuplrit. Bad sat cable wiring...

Thanks for the info...I will try off the electrical system and on it one by one to see what is the main culprit.
I think Isolation is the best method to find the root cause..thanks smile.gif

realtek does not open source..
future firmware update.. can't update the core software.. just minor fix.

Some "china" brand had good support team.

Realtek 1073 .. UI. all same

But can your Xtreamer playback BDISO? As for M6600 it's a matter of whether you are willing to pay the extra $$$!

Well, you are wrong! Himedia HD300 series have already got 2 updates in September & can also playback BDISO. Next firmware update will have youtube & other net functions.

Beside the made-in-china media players, we now have 3 that can playback RMVB....Xtreamer, ACRyan and now, Asus O!Play

If you look here you'll noticed it's more then 3!

But how's the BDISO playback on the Xtreamer then? Anyway, sooner or later, all the realtek based can playback BDISO so it's matter of which brand gets to it first! My point is Chinese made player is not bad after all. In fact 99% of those realtek based players are also make in China. China is the "factory" to our world! So my point is China "boleh"!

Hardware is 1 part, another 1 is the software.. I believe Xtreamer, AC Ryan, WDTV all those non-china company stood behind their product. Most important they have forum which the end user can interact and push for feature needed.

Those china company dunno how long they will support their product.

Well, do you consider Pocornhour as China or otherwised? If you look carefully since the DTS downmix firmware in June there's no update until now for the A110?

please do not mix up the software part of the traditional Sigma design chipset and this realtek type..

for the realtek, it's all the same functions, firms can only do some minor fine tuning between different brands .. apart from the mechanical stuffs and I/o connections, the function of a USD99 Asus and a Euro 140 Xtreamer or a RM699 ACryan is more or less the same..

Asus O!Play HDP-R1

A gentleman who calls himself Boy, was very patient, very knowledgeable and very accommodating in demonstrating the player.

He also went through the reasons why the Asus O!Play price is set at RM699 and how it compares with other Media Player (WD Media Player, RC Ryan etc)

What I saw in the shop is impressive.

Will play with the machine more at home on my 42" plasma this evening and put a review here (if anyone is interested) after that.

Was originally not intending to spend more then RM400 on a media player.

He is convincing and I have purchase the Asus O!Play from C-Zone

Please note, NOT all salesperson in C-Zone knows the Asus O!Play as well as Boy, the first person I approached was able to tell me the price (more expensive) and nothing more.

My two sens.

well, last month i was eyeing for asus o!play since it is around USD99,almost to RM 380. but after being sold in kl, it come to RM699! fuhhh.... sad.gif

later on, i check this review to study why it must not be RM699.the review SAVE ME ALOT!....http://www.iboum.com/pr/ASUSO.php

so now, i'm prepared for WD TV Live. with the price of RM479, i have bajet left to buy 1TB hdd+digital audio cables + TOSlink-to-Coax converter + spicy chicken mcdeluxe. drool.gif

no rmvb, it's ok. can do DD and DTS passthru-and-downmix.

Frankly, the WD Media players' price were very attractive. Unfortunately, each model had file formats which it doesn't play (eg if it can play MKV, it didn't player RMVB etc)

I saw the RCA media player in Singapore (all three models), the cheapest model was around what I paid for the Asus O!Play and their most expensive (can place a HD within the player itself) RM 846...

I was attracted to the RCA's "look" (very British HiFi-ish, solid aluminum face plate) but had since discovered that the player has a tendency to over heat...

The demo unit in the C-Zone was on for 2 - 3 hours and it was cool to touch.

When I broach the subject of why the player in priced at USD99 on the internet and they are selling it for RM6++, the answers was tax. According to Boy (not Ah Moi. I did NOT make the name Boy up *Sigh*) the Malaysia government looking at the specs of the Asus O!Play has deem it a luxury item and had slapped a 30% tax on the said player.

Anybody here can verify that with Customs?

My two sens.

Asus O!Player is connected to my amp using HDMI

The remote and menu of the Asus O!Player is very responsive.

I have Transformer: Revenge of the Fall mkv file and it is great. Will have to compare it with the BD copy when I get mine, but am liking what I have seen so far

Have also tried watching other file I've download (not HD) and they are decent.

The surprise really comes when I player MP3 on the player and am taken aback. I usually HATE listening to MP3 file, and after playing a couple on the above setup, I have to say, they sound good (this is REALLY hard for me to say)

So far, am glad I made the purchase.

Let me start by saying I have a Popcornhour A110, so this is not my 1st Media Streamer.

I ordered the Asus O!play from Amazon, came UPS today. Was really excited to get it as I have been reading great reviews. Hooked it up no problem using a HDMI and network cable. Just like my PCH the plan is to stream everything from my Windows Home Server.

The Asus Menu is somewhat clunky, but not bad. Had no problems getting it to see my WHS share and was streaming movies in no time. Started off with the Dark Knight 720p rip. The video would lock up every 20 seconds or so for about a second or two. Tried Star Trek 720p rip, same issue, would freeze every 30 seconds or so. I noticed the Picture Quality was no where near as sharp as my PCH. Its was almost like it had too much color, I played with the menu picture quality setting with no luck.

So I ran up to best buy tonight after deciding the ASUS O!play was going back to Amazon and on the self was 2 WD HD Live. Whats funny is my wife asked the sales guy who said their WD Rep was just in the store and nothing was said and they had no plans to carry it. It rang up $139.

Got it home, much smaller then the O!play and the cool thing is it does support composite (red, white, yellow). It has a special cable for it which is nice as when I travel, I plan to take this with me so any hotel TV is now going to work!

The Menu on the WD HD is very nice, I did not have the 1st gen WD so I do not know if they changed it. Within seconds I was streaming the Dark Knight with NO issues. Tried a few more movies, no issues at all. Plus my wife thinks the WD Menu is easier to navigate.

I will post more info as I play with it tonight.

So Saturday morning I decided to do a few more tests. Because I was wiring my TV for a new media streamer, I had my HD Dish DVR unplugged and missed Smallville, so I downloaded the 720p version. I watched it on my WD HD Live, looked perfect, tried to FF and during parts to see if I could get the voices off, it never did.

So my wife was going to box up the O!play to send back and I thought I will give it another go. Again, the menu is no where near as smooth as the WD, but I don't care about that. Fired up Smallville and the night scenes were very dark and looked like the colors had bleed through around the edges. My wife, who does not understand what HD is even noticed the difference. I went into the menu of the O!play and tried to adjust the contrast and brightness, it had zero effect. Watched about 20 minutes on the O!play and it did NOT lock up or freeze.

I really wanted to like the ASUS, love their Netbooks, and I want to get two of these, as I have a PCH in my basement for my HomeTheather, and want two cheaper media streamers for my front room and bedroom. I have never been a fan of WD, but I have to admit there WD HD Live is a kick ass little box that rivals my PCH A110.

Anyway...here is another review of Asus Vs Live

QUOTE
I first bought the O!Play and then the WDTV Live. The WDTV Live has more bells and whistles but the Asus is easy to use. I like the remote better, subtitles are better, and the interface is simpler. I had to move a player off my TV to the main one and I set the Asus. It was quite simple and the picture quality on the 42" Bravia is great. I do think the quality of the picture on the WD TV Live is just as good. I would probably go with that one just for the heck of it. They are both good. The lack of volume control on the WDTV really bothers me and I spent hours tries to get it to work with my Harmony 659. The OK button won't work, etc... No big deal but I just think the Asus is a better deal. I also rather like the fact that I can telnet into the Asus. No doubt that is possible on the WDTV2 but I can't figure it out.  The WDTV2 has HFS+ support which is why I kept it and the short testing I did with others at home resulting in everyone else finding the Asus easier to use. There is too much going on in the WDTV2 interface.  Not an easy choice.  pmcd

ASUS' BR-HD3

so fast got new version?

Wi-Fi equipped O!Play Air HDP-R3

Asus has announced a new model of its O!Play HD media player, the Air HDP-R3. The new O!Play brings WiFi, as well as a card reader, while the rest of the features remains the same as on the previously released ASUS O!Play HDP-R1.

The new O!Play AIR HDP-R3 comes equipped with 802.11n WiFi, as well as the card reader for CF, SD/MMC and Memory Sticks (MS/MS Duo) cards. The rest of the features remained the same as this one still supports MPEG1/2/4, H.264, VC-1, RM/RMVB video formats in almost every known container, including popular avi, mkv, wmv, mp4, mov and a bunch of others. It also supports almost every known audio format.

It has HDMI 1.3, composite audio/video and optical digital audio outputs and has one USB 2.0, one eSATA/USB2.0 combo port, one RJ-45 LAN port and a card reader. The dimensions remain at the same 181x125.3x47.7mm, and the only design touch is the WiFi indicator LED on the front of the device.

It is nice to see that Asus included WiFi on its O!Play HD media player as it is much easier to share media content over network and without cables. We just hope that WiFi and a card reader won't affect the price which unfortunately hasn't been announced. The WiFi-less ASUS O!Play HDP-R1 is available at around €90, and we just hope that the new one won't be much pricier.

For other players like Xtreamer, WDTV etc; i will use the same file name as the movie files. It will auto detect the subtitle files and you can select it on the subtitle setting while watching the movie.

Hope it helps you out....

Hdwarexpert is correct! (A big THANK YOU)

Having rename the subtitle files to exactly the same name as the video file did the trick. The .srt files works beautifully with the Asus O!Play.

On another note, I've just updated the firmware for the Asus O!Player from 1.11P to 1.13P and voila, it now plays .iso file!

Brilliant!!! smile.gif

Actually BD.iso files too. It's just that I don't have any BD.iso file to try out at this point in time... But the feature work with DVD.iso so that good too.

Hey hdwarexpert. Thanks again bud for your valueable info about .srt files.

Ah, a sceptic. Please goto Asus website, where it allows u to download the firmware for the O!Play.

Where u can download the latest firmware, 1.13P for the O!Play, in the list of additional feature added to the O!Play, it say play BD.iso files.

I was sceptical too, but have since discover the the O!Play now plays DVD.iso files (it couldn't before the firmware update) so it is reasonable to say, it now plays BD.iso after u update the O!Player with the 1.13P firmware!

playing DVd.iso and playing BD.iso are 2 very different matters

for starters, say example on Win XP computers with BD drive, if you pop a BD movie into a BD-rom you won;'t even see the file structure..

I've tried some BD ISO files on the oplay. can play, but will straight play the largest m2ts file in the BD ISO. BD ISO menu support isn't there yet, mainly due to the lack of support for java.

DVD ISO however, have full menu support, but lack backward navigation support in the menu.

Actually that would be O!Play Air or HDP-R3 (Don't ask me what happened to HDP-R2).

The main difference between O!Play and O!Play Airr is that O!Play Air has wireless connection to your home network and built in card reader.

Well, I'm able to play .MOV file and PCM sound quite well in my Asus O!Play. The only file format I usually have issues playing is surprisingly .WMV file. Have to try to remux one of those files and see if that works.

Just make sure you have the latest firmware (1.21, please DON'T crucify me if that is NOT true, have not been checking the pass week), set the proper video output resolution and also the proper sound output (u usually have to do this once only) and you are good to go.

Hope this helps.

A new version of firmware v1.24P is now available for this media player?

Also note that the player is now in the MYR490 price range.

Asus Malaysia had decided not to bring in anymore media player in the foreseeable future.

Grab the player while you can.

Nuff said.

From a retailer in Low Yat?

Please note that I was very specific to say that Asus MALAYSIA had decided NOT TO BRING anymore Asus Media Player into the country.

Not Asus is getting out of the Media player business.

There is a diference

The Asus O!Play didn't do well in Singapore as well, and it is currently difficult to find the said player in Singapore...

Did you hear otherwise?

Please share.

Hi Everyone

A bit of Asus Media Player Update

O!Play HD2
- World’s first USB 3.0 media player
- Flexible 3.5” HDD storage with NAS support
- Use your iPhone® as a remote control
- TrueHD with 7.1 channel surround audio
- DLNA-certified®

This is a little expensive for my taste... Between RM650 - 750

O!Play MINI

- Stylish and compact HD media player
- Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel surround sound with full HD 1080p
- Full support for most popular media formats
- Exclusive RightTxT auto subtitle detection
- 4-in-1 card reader for easy access to huge range of photo formats

Now we are cooking. This little "baby" has it all and it is priced below RM300!!! 7.1 Dolby TrueHD!!!

Am definitely trying this out (hopefully today)

You have to buy a SPECIFIC thumbdrive wireless adaptor and coupled with the Asus O!Play firmware is suppose to give it wireless capabilities...

Suppose to be a forum somewhere that tells you what to do

Personally haven't done it...

A friend tried and got the wrong adapter whilst he was in China, so wasn't very successful...

Asus Mini

Am testing a set out now for a friend and am very impress

It does a lot of stuff that the original O!Play cannot do

1) Goto a particular time of a program
2) Stream or decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio
3) Play files that pixelate on the Original O!Play

I'm impressed and at THAT Price (RM269)

Give it a try why don't you!! smile.gif
