Who booked AA's flight to Christchurch this coming April 2011? I've got mine for end of May and already got quoted for some self-drive tours. Cheapest so far for 8 days is NZ$1843 (2 person) which includes the Trans-Alpine rail journey back to Christchurch.

NZ's weather is unpredictable as it's maritime..meaning a sudden cold burst of air from Antartica may occur. So be prepared. I've already decided to rent a camper van as it's more flexible and you'll get to camp at sites where the scenery is breathtaking!! I can't wait for May to come! biggrin.gif

I'll be off end of this month! rclxms.gif

I'll be there for 10 nights and will be using a 4 berth campervan from Kea. My itinerary will be as follows but it's just a guideline as we don't want to rush and might stay longer at certain places...

Christchurch - Timaru - Dunedin - Te Anau - Milford Sound - Queenstown - Lake Tekapo - Christchurch.

Campervan is widely available in NZ but the caveat is most (if not all) insist on a minimum rental of 7 days. So to the earlier posting who's planning only 5 nights, I think a rental car would be more suitable. Please also be advised that there will be an influx of visitors during the Rugby World Cup in September, so rental cars and accommodations might be limited during that period. Summer of NZ at the end of the year is also peak season. Book early to avoid disappointment.

There are no highways at South Island and most are just 2 lane trunk roads. Speed limit is maximum 100km/h and don't expect to negotiate your way through if caught. Compulsory seatbelts for all passengers, NZ$150 instant fine if caught. For campervans, there is strictly no camping by the side of the road and freedom camping should only be done with prior permission if the spot you chosen is privately owned. There are numerous free camping sites with only basic facilities and these sites only allows "self sufficient" campervans. Other than that, there's other paid camp sites with charges ranging from NZ$30 - $70 for 2 persons. (powered sites for campervan)

I'll try to update on developments and perhaps also post when I am there.

Cheers! smile.gif

The plan is.

Day 1- Arrive in CHC morning. Go around and see CHC then catch a Crusaders game at night.
Day 2-Pickup Rental car at airport. Drive. Planned a detour and stopover at Mt Cook National Park, just to take in the sights and some picture taking. Start moving maybe a short stop at Wanaka. I recall it being somewhat a nice skitown so again, just to take in the sights. Drive to Te Anau. Sleep in Te Anau.
Day 3-Leave for Milford Sound in the morning, planned to get the 1st Jucy Cruise. Leave for Invercargill, take in the sights a long the way. Mirror Lake, Lake Te Anau etc. Short layover at Invercargill. Based on my reading not much in Invercargill so again, just take in the sights. maybe take a short detour to Bluff if I have the time. Drive to Dunedin, loiter and sleep in Dunedin.
Day 4-Drive to Queenstown. Loiter and sightseeing around Queenstown. Sleep in Queenstown.
Day 5-Return car in the morning. Loiter around Queenstown. Flight back to Auckland at 4pm.

It was a last minute plan to go to South Island. Didn't factor in a trip to South Island initially, thought of just going North but changed last minute so decided to just rent a car and drive around. For the record, I have done an Auckland-Milford Sound-Auckland trip driving before in 2004 so this is technically revisiting.

Google Maps states it's a 1600+km drive in total, without factoring the 30km detour should I decide to take it to Bluff. So I'm down to about 700km or so per day in those 2 major days of driving. One of my possible variable is skipping Mount Cook National Park. Saves me about 2 hours or so of driving. Bluff is another variable.

I don't think there's enough time especially Milford Sound - Invercargill. Your itinerary too pack IMHO
