I thought we turn off the 3G and data roaming, it will not enable the maxis 3G data already, right?
*
It will just redirect itself to use Edge or GPRS.. Remember, the 3G on and off button is there for you to turn off the 3G connection for battery saving, it doesn't turn off the ability to connect online via other protocols.. IPhone being as smart as it is, will kick in to the other available options.. changing the APN settings ensure that even those protocols would not be able to go online.

Give it a try, turn off 3G and attempt to use something that uses internet.. you will see a "E" icon next to your signal bar

don ever think onli iphone is smart  biggrin.gif

as say...if so worry of using cellular network on iPhone OS, better off use ipod touch...
*
Sigh, it's not the fear of using cellular network on IPhone, it is to allow us to control our usage.. even if so.. I got money, I like, I buy the Iphone.. what's it to you??

Can the IPod touch make calls? can it sms??? yawn.gif no? Does it have GPS? no? So, just leave your own comments to yourself.

tats the thing dude...

u want mobility, get iphone...it connects u anytime....control? control urself....get a tool for tat or manage urself..

jz as a game device? itouch works fine, and don need worry about paying bill...call/sms? jz get a cheap phone will do...

depends wat ur requirement....i jz don see a point y one keep complaining of the connectivity since this is why an iphone worth to buy for...

if u think i offending u for this...then i ll remain silent after this....

for general iphone user wannabe...think before u buy...if u want the connection, stop piss about the connection...i don mind u piss Maxis for the plan rate tot tongue.gif
but it still cheaper compare to celcom!
*
I don't get what you are on about, I never complained on the connectivity of the IPhone etc.. In fact I like that it keeps looking for the connection I want to access the net when I WANT IT TO. I am just offering my help to people who wants to control their usage hence I advice the use of fake APN settings.

We ARE all pissing about the plan rate, not so much about the IPhone's connection and hence people are looking for a way to make sure they don't overuse.

Learn to read please.

i think, the only solution is, turn off both edge and 3g? but to turn off edge, must jb 1st rite?
*
Yep, best way is to put garbage in the APN settings.. as even if you can't turn off edge.. it still can't access anything.. you can do it manually, so no JB needed (provided you installed the carrier bundle)

.. Settings --> General --> Usage on the iphone consider as unrealiable.that is according to maxis customer support. say something like 65% accurate!
cannot answer back when ask to them,where to monitor?
*
Actually I've questioned them back, why is it that in the bill they can clearly see my data usage but they can't tell me/allow me to check what my data usage is..

Their reply is " we don't offer such a service" ... makes me wonder, how then do we monitor our usage, if they claim the IPhone one is unreliable.. or maybe that is the whole point.

reason can be:

1) Maxis CS is useless, can't even do simple thing

2) jz like Apple not yet enable the RF chip in 3Gs, Maxis know they can check for you, but no officially support yet...so no service.

3) We are betting on a wrong Telco, who cant even able to track ur data usage for u
*
So, in conclusion, Maxis sucks, right? hehe

Seriously though they need to revamp that crappy web account management thing that they have... it is pretty much useless..

@tnsai,
R u still having billing issues with Maxis on your data charges?  It's been 2 months since I've swapped over from an Unlimited Plan to a 500MB data plan and I haven't had any issues whatsoever with over billing.

Also, the counter on my iPhone sure seems rather accurate; unlike what other forummers here are stipulating *shrugs*
*
Nah no problems so far, I just don't like how they don't allow us to check our data usage by calling them, seeing as how it is shown in my bill, accurate to the KB tongue.gif

I just got a feeling it is them denying us the knowledge of our data usage , so as to let us have a higher chance of overusing it.. but I could be just being paranoid..

I have yet to breach the 100MB mark since I started using the iPhone smile.gif
*
Lol same, I've actually been more actively using the net this month.. right now my usage stands at about 80mb..

I had about 50mb usage before i restored my phone.. 32mb of that is paid for in the bill last month.. so I should have used about 100mb used

i'll see if that is reflected accurately when the bill comes..

now i just edit carrier plist and can edit juz the cellular data apm. can still send mms but no more accident internet usage  icon_rolleyes.gif

Sorry, I don't understand, but how does fakeAPN drain your battery?, as far I can understand it does the same thing as manually changing your APN.. and I don't see that it runs in the background using ps -e in the terminal..

What am I missing here?

hey there are reports on the net that others are having the same issue. so im not the only 1
as many or some of u mentioned b4, iphone tends to connect to the internet whenever it wants to. and trying to keep the apps updated. randomly searching updates for the os. so when it fails to connect it will try to reconnect for a few more times.
when i check my hotlink statement, i can see gprs charges every few hours eventho im not using the phone.
if fakeapn isnt draining ur battery, consider urself lucky or do a quick comparison on how long ur fon last when u off fakeapn n on it.
when using it my phone can barely last a day, now can last more than a day
*
Hmmm ok, thanks for sharing that with us, that is pretty interesting.. luckily for me i fall into one of the "worked-perfectly-for" category. I guess this is something for everybody to look out for..

Oh, previously xpressside you mentioned about the fakeAPN draining battery, yes it apparently could happen if you turn on FakeAPN and still leave Edge on..

I noticed my battery drain from 100% to 95% in about 57 minutes(standby) . As the article mentioned, the OS goes crazy trying to restablish connection using the fakeAPN and I guess that is what was draining the battery.

Turning off Edge as well fixes the problem, but it leads me to another curious question. As far as I can tell, even with FakeAPN off, turning off Edge effectively cuts me off from data usage. I offed it along with 3G and fakeAPN off(original apn settings) , I wasn't able to access anything.. so maybe we don't even need FakeAPN.. can anybody else verify this on their unit?

@tnsai,
If 3G is OFF without fakeAPN U can still be connected to data service via EDGE/GPRS.
*
Yes. But if I turn off Edge also, it doesn't. I've tried app store, facebook etc, no access

@justme3,
500MB is definitely more than enough if you don't use it to download stuff.  I am on the move quite a bit and do quite a lot from my i3GS and thus far I haven't even breached 200MB p/month.  Just don't start downloading using ur i3GS and u should be save.

@tnsai,
Your phone's jailbroken? There's not settings on mine to disable EDGE/GPRS.
*
Yep Jailbroken phone, thing is though, I don't know if I even need to use the jailbroken facilities to limit my usage.. I mean it is pretty much common sense to control the data usage.. if you are going to tether and use your phone as a "modem", please know that there are plenty of things working in the background of a computer that can use your data..

Windows Automatic Updates for example.. Virus definitions updates MSN polling with it's servers, Flash elements on a page loading etc etc ..

So far for me, I would say my usage is pretty ok .. i think last billing cycle I topped at about 200mb (maxis bill not here yet grrrr) and I've used it a fair bit.. surfed the net when the wife's shopping .. loaded some youtube videos of barney for my daughter(youtube defaults to low quality here when on 3g) , downloaded some updates via cydia and App store.
I'm going to do a test this month and not depend on fakeAPN to control my use and I'll see how I do.

Even when jail broken I'd say it is pretty accurate off by 10mb or so (in my case less??=_=) .. i thought i had close to 130+ mb at least but it turns out I only used 122mb.. what a waste... tongue.gif

Glad to inform that my first bill is within my expectation. Data statistics from iPhone somewhat match Maxis. Since I forgot to reset on 17th (my billing cycle), I'd say the numbers are pretty close. This is my usage of two weeks.

iPhone: 107.3MB
Maxis:  101.9MB

My phone is Jailbroken 3Gs.

Let's see how it goes for this month.. smile.gif

As this thread goes on providing more information to new users, I want to make an observation (and please don't get offended ppl) that so far the usages not tallying with people using the IPhone(JB/Non-JB) could be due to carelessness on the part of the user.. it is easy to sometimes use data without thinking about it.. perhaps sometimes using restore or whatever reset your usage counters??

Just a thought

hmmm... if you didn't JB your phone then that is indeed weird (even I JB my phone, my data usage is quite accurate)

Are you sure you did not use that much? maybe you tethered forgot about it.. and then you did a restore etc etc .. if i am not wrong, restoring your phone clears the data you have used on the counters..

@tnsai,
i never use my iphone to do tethering and i didnt restore it before~
maybe i should uptate to fw 3.1.2?
currently fw 3.o.1
*
I don't think that matters or affect how your data counters are updated.. if this is truly a recurring problem.. then I think maybe you should have your IPhone looked into.. cos so far for me and my friends, the data counter has been quite accurate (off by a few mb)
