QUOTE(austinlai @ Aug 16 2009, 01:04 PM)
hi guys~
need help here.
I was spending almost 2 hours daily juz for killing ants tat invade my Ts' enclosures and those on the shelf tat i put my Ts.
Eventhou i killed 1000 of them, there're still another 1000 of them waiting for me the next day i wake up.
really pissed me off~Geramnya~~~ vmad.gif  vmad.gif  vmad.gif
So i made a container filled wif water and put them at each of the "legs" of the shelf im using to put my Ts.
And guess wat, those ants even go inside the water and attempt to swim across to reach the shelf.
Althou 90% of them will drown in the sea,but i was suprise tat there're still survivors!!!
So,the conclusion is,the water method doesnt work.
They can ignore their life juz to mess wif my Ts.

All the while im putting my Ts in my room.
when i 1st started wif ony 1 tarantula, there's no ants problem.
Now as my Ts number increasing, the amount of ants also increasing~!
I clean my Ts' enclosure everytime after they eat, there's no visible food leftover.
And i can ony place my Ts in my own room coz im living wif housemates.

Any other method i can prevent those ants?

thx~

I use commercial ant bait. Ants go in grab the stuff and return to the colony. Wipes out the colony. Usually takes 2-3 days. 4 days tops and no more ants. But Malaysia is a different story- got so many different kinds of ants! Not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot.

Bet now everyone is gonna have you smuggle back an MET sling! laugh.gif
Lets see, one in your shirt pocket, one in each of your jeans pocket, and a pair of film canister ear rings! That's 7 slings! rclxs0.gif

Austin, i myself did had some ants but didn't cause much problem as they are sugar ants and go for sweet item and leftover mealies which stop when i started to clean my room frequently.

Did you tried those ants powders(poison)? It can elimintate a huge colony of ants.

and where i can get this as well?
are u talking about the same thing as Oldfart or its a different thing?
i'd like to try both.

Don't know where you'd go to get ant poison over there. I haven't been to a Malaysian supermarket since 1987. Over here they sell ant traps with the poison pratically anywhere- Supermarkets, hardware stores, pharmacies etc.

Never tried cross breeding but it is possible- though not looked upon favorably within the hobby. If you do get a viable sac, please inform whoever you give the babies to that they are hybrids.

basically there are a lot of mechanism that prevent interspecies breeding that it will be wiser to google urself: postzygotic, prezygotic bla bla bla.

but the negative aspects to it is like mating horse with donkey to get mule.

these hybrids wouldn't be able to reproduce fertile off springs and other genetic mutation due to the immune system; possibilities that they will result in unstable life form or even highlight the bad genes in the DNA. so they get sick easily or what not is a big MAYBE.

the same goes with tarantula! tongue.gif

colouration will of course goes huu-haa since they are randomly fertilized in the paternal and maternal chromosomes.

anyway since speciation can also occur, there are chances that they evolve recently and their genetic pool hasn't differ so much that you can actually still breed them and hopefully nothing bad will happen to them etc; grammostola porteri and rosea or other brachys perhaps; only differ in colour form and certain adaptation to nature.

hope this helps!
gosh I crap a lot. Do ask mr stew for better elaboration biggrin.gif

Don't really know. tongue.gif I've seen discussions come up from time to time on other forums but never really followed it. My guess is it frustrates people when they see a T and aren't really sure if it is a hybrid or a new species or a mutation. Some might think it is a waste of a male's sperm or the male if it gets crunched during the mating process. Don't know if hybrids are fertile or not. If they aren't fertile then it's really a waste of sperm. biggrin.gif
My personal view on this is... it's your T, do as you wish; but if you have babies from that experiment, be careful with it- don't distribute it without telling others that it is a hybrid.
