How do these standalone boxes compare to the upscalers found in the better AVR (like Reon or ABT)?

If your AVR already has those, is it necessary to buy a standalone upscaler?

ABT produces the DVDO's. Much better than AVR's. As they also sell their own processor boxes if they were to sell the same processors to the AVR's then it would be a slap on their own faces.
Just like a small ionizer built in an air cond unit compared to a whole stand alone ionizer unit. Which would be more efficient?

Depends on the need as it's very subjective. But price wise it is a killer. Nowadays the AVR has got preety good processors but only for the medium to higher end units.
