Very good advice from the poster above me, and I'd like to add my own. Please try everything else before you resort to drugs. First thing is try to find someone who you trust and can talk to, that is a very big step to sharing your problems and to relieve the burden a bit. You will feel much better if there's someone to support you. If you really can't think of anyone or are just too embarrassed, you can try calling the Befrienders. They will lend a listening ear as long as you want, and empower you to have a better look at your situation.

2nd thing is to figure out why you're depressed. Is it because of your body image? studies? social problems? Whatever the reason, try to read more about the subject and improve yourself in whatever area you're lacking. Exercise, lose weight, learn how to look good, eat healthy, spent more time studying, and get some hobbies, watch shows you'll be interested in. Keep your mind occupied instead of doing nothing and having self-pity, that's the worst scenario for self-destruction. I like this quote I read from someone:

"Whatever you focus on is what you will get. Stay focused on fear and that is what you will get..fear and failure.
Focus on results and the power of belief and change, that is what you’ll get.
When you stay less focused on your journey to a goal and put all your focus on the goal itself.
Surround yourself with positive mentors and people who are good at what you want to become and what you want out of life."

If any case, it will be a long journey ahead of you but don't give up. Focus on bettering yourself day by day and don't stop progressing in life.

There are lots of people very eager to give advice for depressed people (for who has not been depressed once in a while), but very few who understand severe clinical depression. Look at the above for examples of clueless people.

If you've come to the stage where you feel an urgent need for medical help, go. You feel life is not worth living? Should just jump out of a window and end it all? Go quickly. To a real specialist.

Clinical depression is a medical condition. Talking doesn't help. Medication does.

More stupidity and sheer ignorance from people who think they know everything.

1. How do you know none of us have experienced depression? Psychic powers? GJ on knowing me better over an internet forum than I know myself. And yes I have been depressed for years myself, and the only place I'll admit that to is on a forum where noone knows me because its embarassing and awkward as hell. Did I do drugs to get out of it? No. Am I out of it? Yes.

2. None of us said don't visit a psychiatrist, someone even said she visited a GP and it helped her a lot. We said TRY EVERYTHING ELSE FIRST before taking drugs, not go and pop them like candy expecting it to be a miracle lifetime cure. You're saying that's wrong? lol

3. Talking doesn't help? lol i can't even begin to comprehend why you would make such a statement. What do you think they do when they visit a psychiatrist? go there and cry? In case you didn't notice, human beings are social creatures and talking to someone who truly cares and understands you without being judgmental (hint: someone like you) is invaluable to life. Talking to someone you pay $$$ to see isn't the same at all.

4. If people didn't care about her genuinely, this thread would have 0 replies, including your worthless post not addressing the question the TS asked in hers.

however if the doc says it's critical - TAKE THE MEDS.

Lastly, I believe your worldview makes a huge difference. I happen to believe that I didn't appear on this earth by chance and that a loving Creator created me for a reason and purpose - and that's helped me tremendously in understanding He cares and knows my pain. That gives me immense hope that life is worth living.

yeah that's very true..especially your last paragraph! TBH, that was the only reason I didn't off myself, cos of God and fear of hell, but now that I'm through that rough period in my life, I'm grateful everyday and I believe in Him even more. Life is so much better when you have meaning and a purpose.
