A modded US wii, if you have the relevant disc updated, you can actually use that to override and remove the mods installed. However, i'm not sure if it is foolproof because I've had some cases heard that it did brick in the end.

I suggest you take the back the wii and get a refund.

All game discs contains update with the latest firmware compatible. Frankly, the NSMB game should be able to update your wii. Which is why I felt a little awkward that it couldn't do so.

Restore factory settings should be possible too no?
