Methinks it is up to the individual. Unless there is a blanket fatwa, that says so, it is up to the individual. Of course, there are those whose belief on things that are wildly different that what's commonly practiced here, and they are still considered Muslim brothers, so why is something as nitpicky as this should divide you and me?
My opinion, and this is purely my own, living rigidly strict to the belief of your faith, restricts and negates your ability of doing the things that you would be able to do. Food in general, and the halal status specifically, is a good example. Trust me when I say I've colleagues who had nothing but bread brought from home, for 3 days, because to them, the halal status of the food overseas are suspect. If this is the case, Muslims will be hampered from achieving and be on par with others, just because he is malnourished by eating bread everyday and holding to his dear faith to sustain him. That is just my 2 cents.
