I apologize for bringing up this thread. My PS3 suffered the same fate as TS, today. Was downloading Dead Space demo this morning, and suddenly the system shuts down by itself. I turn it back on and the green light appeared briefly, followed by a very brief yellow light, and lastly a blinking red light. Took the hard disk out, turned it on again and still the same results. I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones because I'm aware that this is a rare problem. My warranty expired already.

My PS3 is a 60GB SG unit. Purchased on 16 August 2007. RIP today (29 November 2008).

I guess I happen to be one of the few unlucky ones.
It's too bad that my warranty has expired. I guess it's time for me to get a new one, but not anytime soon. I don't want to miss GT5 next year!

@nwk, I was thinking of sending too Sony SG too, but I'm not sure how much they will charge me as I'm out of warranty as this is a very old PS3. I'll have to make a few enquiries if I'm really interested for them to fix it for me. But, if it's too expensive (e.g RM600 above), then I'd better save up for a few months more to get a brand new MY unit.

I did some googling and found that no one is sure what's the exact cause of this red blinking light hardware failure for the 60GB PS3. Some said it's due to overheating, some said it's due to faulty Hard Drive, and also it could possibly be due to a faulty power supply. It's mysterious don't you think?

Thanks for the update, bro monyetbesi. Do inform us on the status of your PS3 soon, ok. I'm starting to miss playing on my PS3 also.

Thanks for the congrats, everyone. When my PS3 was dead for about 6 months, I really miss console gaming. Now, to get back on my gaming habits.

To answer your question, when my PS3 YLODed on 29/11/2008, I was unsure what to do with it. Upon googling, some sites suggest to format the HDD and boot it up again (which I did), but that doesn't definitely solve the problem. I also found the Heatgun method which I came across a few months later but not confident enough to try it and also the lack of tools on my part. Hence I sold of my games, my SIXAXIS, and even my HDD. . My original decision at that time was to stop gaming on PS3 and perhaps maybe to buy a 360 again or going back to retro gaming. A few months later, I still have yet to decide what to do with it (I even thought of selling it), until recently afrojo offered to help revive mine. I was feeling slightly hesitant at first, but eventually figured out I have nothing to lose.

So, actually it's a matter of me not sure what to do with it (PS3) when it YLODed, and also frustrated with Sony at the same time.
