This weekend will be too rush. If next weekend's on, count me and my brother in. I understand this will be a tiring and hot job but we'll try our best to help in any way we can. I've emailed Sabrina twice and she replied very promptly - I think the reason either she or TV haven't reply is because they were too exhausted.

Will any kibbles do? I know Pedigree kibbles are no good but it's the cheapest around. If it's ok with you guys, I'll the to get 1-2 bags of the 18kg ones. My main purpose it so that the dogs will get something to eat to fill them up and only later provide them with slightly better kibble during the recovering period. I apologize for making the offer to get the cheap kibbles as I've already donated all of my personal allowance for the month of May to Furry Friends Farm.

Meanwhile, maybe we all should brainstorm on how to round up the dogs in the smaller islands. My msn id is celinesm@hotmail.com. Anyone interested to discuss the rescue mission please add me in. Do add a note stating you're frm LYN dog rescue mission, else i might accidentally reject you adding me. thanks

The reason I'm offering to donate kibbles is because after reading the updates posted by TV Smith, it seems that at most the number of dogs that they manage to rescue at a time was only 1-3 dogs. How about the rest marooned at those islands? They have already said that the dogs are afraid of humans and ran deeper into the mangrove swamp.

We gotta feed those still stranded there while trying to rescue any of the dogs that we can get our hands on. Even if Sabrina and team only manage to rescue 1-2 today, at least she can leave kibbles + fresh water for the remaining dogs.

Do keep us updated on the situation.

I'll be bringing along two bags of dog food next week.

If SPCA is the receiving end of any rescued dogs from Pulau Ketam, it's almost sending them to a certain death. It pains me to know that after going through the effort to save them, we're sending them to another dead end way (pun intended). I understand that Sabrina's farm can't take in so many dogs but if the Pulau Ketam dogs will be send to PAWS or SPCA, I will donate the kibbles to Sabrina instead. She needs it more for the Death Island dogs than those at Pulau Ketam now.

QUOTE(adrianck @ May 10 2009, 10:07 AM)
this cant be sure as we do not know the amount of strays around pulau ketam now... thats y the survey is important.... we will not know how many dogs are still there in pulau ketam ....tv smith n sabrina is concentrating at pulau tengah and if they require our help, hen we see what we can do... probably after pulau ketam, we may rent a boat and go to pulau tengah as well....

this all i cant confirm until when i survey pulau ketam first. i dont wanna rush into anything b4 i have full survey, full info and so on....

that is y i kept mentioning tht the survey is an important element....

btw, my lastest update we have 5 volunteers include me for this trip.... so should be adequate for today mission...

LYN'ers, please pray for us and hope this mission will be a successful ones.
*
smile.gif Have an eventful trip. Will checking up on LYN later this evening.

how bout save the dogs at penang here... hmm.gif

here at permatang pauh,u can see many dogs being tied at one place

for even 10years they din let them go even for a while...sad

all the dogs came here as a beautifull lovely dog...

but go as "no hair" dog...poor

all the time, when i see the little cute dog being tied infront of the store i really wan to save them...

but i cant i juz see them being weaker and poorer as every days go... sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif

You could do your part by contacting Penang SPCA. There will always be abandoned/injured stray dogs and cats. What we can do is try to contact the relavant parties and inform them of what you have seen. I've made a number of calls to SPCA when I saw dogs being ill-treat by their owners - we can't expect the SPCA be making rounds all over the place in search of animals in need - WE must do our part to help them help/save these animals.

QUOTE(beatlesalbum @ May 10 2009, 03:54 PM)
Just want to let you guys know that once you wish to undertake the rescue at the other island where the dogs were abondened, please please please take precaution with regrds to the strays and the island itself.
1) Theyre strays, they may have rabies, fleas, make sure you have proper first aid at hand.
2) Do your research and also ask around the fishermen and locals on pulau ketam of the dangerous species of animals or plants that they have seen or reside in these mangrove islands, ie: sea snakes, poisonous plants, sea alligators.
3) Remember rule 1 and 2
*
Yeah, we understand the risks that we are facing. I know that we might actually be hindering Sabrina and team in doing their job if we were to follow them to the islands, so that is why I don't mind if we have to stay ashore to help with whatever we're assigned. My brother lives in Bkt Beruntung, which is very near Rawang, so if Sabrina needs a hand at her farm we can go over there to help out. I've previously said that I will only give the kibbles to Sabrina's farm, not the SPCA.

QUOTE(nicoty_yne @ May 10 2009, 06:26 PM)
I thinking the same way as yours. I wish we can help Sabrina more than sending the dogs to SPCA n PAWS coz i have a bad experience sending a dog i rescued to SPCA here 3 years ago. So i end up keeping the dog my self (took the trouble. I'm a malay and live in the apartment so u know what i mean)

Added on May 10, 2009, 6:27 pm

And u didnt contact the authority like SPCA??Maybe u have more luck than mine in dealing with them (SPCA)
*
I've sent a rescued dog to SPCA last time (before I knew there was a Furry Friends Farm) and I was forced by them to sign a Euthanasia form because they said there was 'no more space' for the dog. I would've kept the rescued dogsmyself but it were aggresive towards my own 3 dogs and it pains me till this day to sign that form. Apart from not getting along with my dogs, that stray was extremely friendly towards people. I admit I didn't know anyone that could've fostered it for a period of time. The guilt is like a thorn stuck in my side ever since then.

Looking forward to the trip this weekend. Anyone from Setapak area - Maybe we can carpool together instead of each of us driving there individually? My brother and I will be in one car, so if anyone wants to carpool or go in a group is fine with me.

I've a friend who can donate two cages though I'm not sure if it's a big or small cage. Will update later.

Adrian, I understand why you say you do not wish to get into Sabrina and TV Smith's rescue effort at the other islands. I sincerely thank you for your efforts but we have to consider where we are going to place the dogs after we have gotten them off Pulau Ketam.

Like I've mentioned, I do not wish to participate if the rescued dogs are to be placed at SPCA because 80% of those rescued dogs will end up being euthanised due to lack of place at their compound. I have suffered the guilt of having one of the strays that I have rescued being put to sleep on the very same day that I sent them to SPCA and I WILL not again suffer the guilt of saving the Pulau Ketam strays only to see them being euthanised due to whatever reasons.

I am not a pro-life fanatic and I believe in euthanising animals that are in the last stages of their lives due to disease or internal injury - not because there's not enough space to place them.

Please, try to get hold of Sabrina and see if we can place some of older/sick dogs and puppies at her farm. Those dogs need more love and care than the healthier ones.

Please understand I'm not trying to be difficult but I want to make sure my efforts in saving those poor dogs will not end up having them being euthanised in the end even though they are not dying of terminal disease.

I am bringing about 30++ people, we are going to separate to two teams to work on Pulau Ketam and Pulau Tengah.
If let say Sabrina needs more help from me, I don't mind to shift a team for her, or even get another team for her, since she knows me (my dharma name).  tongue.gif
*
Skysherly, does Sabrina require help over at Pulau Tengah or even at her farm? I think the urgency is to save those stranded at the cluster of Hell Islands rather than those at Pulau Ketam itself. Since Adrian have spoken to the village head, we've managed to buy some time for those dogs. I'm very worried for the weaker and smaller dogs trapped at Pulau Tengah.

Anyone here have access to fishing nets? If we can't grab the dogs, worse scenario is that we use fishing nets to catch them (if they're near the shore where there's not much trees + branches)

Guys, instead of every other person contacting Sabrina or TV Smith, please post whatever help you guys can provide in here and let 1 or 2 person do the calling. It'll be very confusing to both of them if different ppl calls in to offer help and etc. Everyone please work together for the dogs' sake.

Thanks

That is exactly the reason why we are holding off the Pulau Ketam visit this weekend and discuss the best way to handle the rescue mission with Sabrina. I know everyone have the best intentions but better prepare carefully so that every trip made to rescue the dogs are not in vain. Anyone interested in joining us at FFF this weekend or for next weekend's Pulau Ketam mission, please post here. The committee will take note of those of you guys that's joining.

Don't get too excited first. As mentioned, careful planning is required. Sabrina and TV Smith are working very hard to rescue the dogs at Hell Island, so don't bombard them with calls/emails at the moment. The Pulau Ketam dogs are not in serious condition as the ones at Hell Island, so there is still time for us plan the next step. Anyone who have any ideas to contribute on how to trap the dogs (to get them off the island), kindly post their ideas here. Thank you!

As mentioend, one of the ideas I can think of is to use fishing nets. Another idea is to ask villagers to help us catch the dogs <-- might not work coz some of them might expect monetary reward. Anyway, feel free to contribute ideas please.

hi chibi tenko.. you are right.. i will discuss this with my fren again. she's too eager to go to pulau ketam to help.. whereas i say that the cost is high for just a few people to go there - in the end do nothing and just help pulau ketam tourism (food, lodgings, boat)..

anyhow once i confirm will lias with you..

p/s: one of the things we can provide is a van.. transport human or dogs ... biggrin.gif
*
Sure no problem. As mentioned by Adrian, if you're interested in participating in our group, join us tonight for a msn discussion.

I wonder.. is there any goverment vet nearby that u guys can send the rescued dogs for treatment? Such as Klinik Kembiri etc. Err.. Are they good vet?
*
Well... my own personal experience was not a good one. Once I bring in a stray with a broken leg to the gov vet at Cheras there (near the roundabout). The smart fella diagnose the dog's condition by just using a piece of flat wood thingy that looks like an oversized ice cream stick while standing quite a distance away from the dog. Maybe not all gov vets are like that but....

QUOTE(nicoty_yne @ May 12 2009, 11:35 PM)
Try Dr Loh from Scarrfff Project 012-2023794, area Kota Kemuning. My geography is sucks. Does it near and easy for u guys to send the dogs there? Maybe shud try to give her a call first and ask. My fren said Dr Loh has been care a lot of stray dogs in her clinic. I hope there's a vet who willing to treat the dog and charge for the meds and treatment only.
*
My other brother lives in Kota Kemuning. You guys have the address to Dr Loh's clinic? Maybe my dad can drop by and ask Dr. Loh whether she's willing to help out that way or not. To be honest, I think it's better to meet her face to face than to call her through phone to ask if she's willing to help or not as a sign of respect lor.

Secretary cum Media & Communications reporting in! Hi guys! biggrin.gif

First of all, apologies if any of you tried to contact me but can't reach. I've been running up and down Pulau Ketam for the last couple days, and will continue to do so until I'm satisfied with the information I'm gathering (eg: how where when the strays lurk).

So far, in the latest updates, I found 2 possible hot spots where the strays hangout. I'm going back to the island later, to confirm the sightings. I don't have a translator with me yet (I dunno hokkien la!!) but I'll try my best to chat more with the villagers, hoping to find out more, like maybe there's a favorite house the strays love.

It doesn't hurt to find out the least horrendous spot to go under the houses too, when the need arises.

So, I'll be afk/busy/dnd a lot until Friday, most probably, which I'll settle down with all the information, analyze a bit then put them in a nice simple chart that tells us what where when how is the best way to go about the missions.

Good luck on getting more volunteers and equipments. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the hard work Joyce! Do remember to take lotsa fluids and rest.

The thread name is like the team name already. That is why we are asking those who are interested in helping out, please post in here and Adrian/Anne will take note of the volunteers. If anyone decides to go to Pulau Ketam themselves or organize future trips (but not with us), you will have to state it clearly because it will confuse newcomers of this thread. Don't get me wrong as personally I am very appreciative of support and help provided by volunteers/rescuers. smile.gif

IMO, it will be better to have everyone work together so we can achieve better results instead of going in diffferent batches/group.

Shame on those ppl who use public funds to go on a sight-seeing trip. If want to look-see look-see, use their own money la! The rescuers need those money for mission.

Hi everyone, this is Adriene (not sure with the exact spelling), a survivor of the Hell Island, Pulau Tengah.

user posted image

At about 4.20pm today, Terrance (or better known as TV Smith) found out there’s a rescued dog left at Perlabuhan Klang, along with the cage. He managed to get a volunteer (I’m sorry I couldn’t remember his name) to find and secure them. We acted as the emergency dispatch, and delivered the dog to Furry Friends Farm.

- Click here to read the full story of the day. Too long to copy paste here. -

The kind uncle is called Donald. I overheard Terrence tell Adrian to 'contact Donny'. Luckily he was there to move the dog from the jetty, else she'll be baked to death. Here's Donald's blog : http://birdstalkingtoo.blogspot.com/

QUOTE(Yukaeshi @ May 18 2009, 12:20 AM)
The female form of Adrian is Adrienne tongue.gif

Good job on the rescue, guys! No wonder you all left rather hurriedly after TV Smith and Pummkin's appearance. I thought you all had left, without saying goodbye sad.gif

P.S. I can't believe you guys really took my idea to name the first dog you guys rescue after Adrian... laugh.gif

BTW, what do you guys want to look for as treasurer? I mean, since we're not handling cash, so what would the job description of the treasurer be? And since we're not handling cash, I suppose I could volunteer if it involves things like handling donations, keeping track, collaborating with you guys and/or FFF regarding the donated materials etc. (But not soliciting donations) I'm a very organised person so keeping track of things and handling stuff is quite easy for me >_> Although, that being said, I have to at first say that I will and may not be able to follow you guys around during the rescue missions due to other commitments- I'd mostly be at FFF.
*
thumbup.gif Finally a volunteer for the Treasurer's position. We have to hurry to Port Klang because first Donald can't stay too long at the jetty there and it was starting to get late. Although traumatised, SD (short for Serene Adrianne) was relatively calm on the way back to FFF although she did left a big thank you gift in Panasonic88's car. tongue.gif Glad too see she don't have any visible bad injury although she's very thin.

OT, I thought the female form of Adrian is Adrianna?

Dear all....

let me recall yesterday outing in which im very glad to see all the members hand in hand to go all out at FFF, and even when it comes to 134 packs of 10KG rice, in which in total... we lifted up 1.34 tonnes of rice!! aint this gonna go in as a record?

im glad too that we r able to spoke to smith n sabrina at FFF, and yes, as what joyce aka A-D-Photographer did mentioned earlier, we are now officially collaborating with FFF, TV smith n Pam as a official partner to them.... and we are a part of their team whom sharing same vision, same objectives.

we shall await whats the outcome of FFF, SPCA, other NGO's n government decisions n outcome of the meeting before any other further plans could be made by tonight.... so pray that everything will go smoothly, and by then we shall know where is our role in the collaborating partnership...

i believe we are heading to the right directions, and on the right path as well to do more, so i hope this team here will stay together as tight as possible, work hand in hand n eventually, we will get thru all the hardship n challanges ahead of us.

and also, i would like to thanks mun yee on behalf of the team for contributing 3 dog cages for our mission, and made her all the way from bukit jelutong to pass it to us..... may you be blessed for your kind n generous contributions.

sidestep abit, i didnt know louis, celine and michelle had some evil idea brows.gif of naming the dog as Adrianne, although Donald had name her Serene earlier, and when we arrive at FFF later with SD, i only thinking to get her out and place her in a safe heaven of her own.

then comes, the picture sessions, name of Serene Adrianne, etc... i was like blur for a few moments, i believe this not my alone works, its to the team in whole as well!!

Team-mates... heres to u cheers.gif (replace the mug with coke, plain water pls) haha...

enjoy this beginning of our journey, and we will face more n more challanges soon...

cheers!

tongue.gif My shoulder and arm muscles aching like hell now but yeah it was fun lor. Btw, Donald said he finally saw some macho guys at work wor brows.gif Nice work you guys. Special thanks to Dadarouch for soaking up some of SD's pee with his pants while we were ferrying her back to FFF. Looking forward to hear the outcome of today's meeting.
