I agree, buying a HD now is not the wisest choice. In 3 months time you will be itching to upgrade to HD2. The difference in price of HD and HD2 is not substantial but the performance is wink.gif
*
Agreed at a price difference of RM500 is not worth buying new. It is better buy used,a s used sets now selling around 1.5K only ; I managed to sell off mine a 10 months old set at 1.7K

HD Tweak can do almost all the things..good application  thumbup.gif
Any other recommended software?
To back up whole phone, can i use Spb Backup?
*
Personally I find Sprite Backup 6.5 is better and always able to restore 100% ALL the time; do not have such reliable experience with SpB Backup. Howevder last week SpB Backup released ver 2## which was supposedly refined for WM 6.5. You can always download the trial versions and test which is better for you

Nowadays all modern pdaphones will autoconfigure your internet settings once you put in a new simcard. Since you are using a htc HD it should not be a issue at all. Personally I am now on Digi and Celcom ( last year was on Maxis) - once you change sim, the phone will detect and auto configure it. If it doesn't this only means your HD has hardware problem. I travel overseas frequently ( over the last 2 years UK, Brunei, Cambodia, HK, China, Spore, Indonesia, HK, Macau, Australia ) and my htc phones will auto configure all the telco settings without any problems

Where can i see "auto configure"? After i slot in sim card, open power then just normal, nothing happen or showing auto configure.
*
When you put in a new simcard, the phone will show you message it will auto configure settings. I repeat since you are using HTC HD - this function is definately there ; this feature is there since the earlier htc models released at least 2-3 years back. I can only conclude is either your phone problem or simcard problem. Why don't you ask for a new simcard ?

I have been using Maxis 5 years already and on all my previous Dopod/Treo PRo/HTC pdaphones I need not do such settings manually - is all auto configure. And it will also autoconfigure for roaming data too.

Never/or did not notice such issue ever in all my HTC phones I have used.

Is this so critical issue - why don't you take it back to the shop and ask them to show you other units whether same issue ?

If other units do not have this problem , return to them for warranty claims then

Anyway I tested my current TP2 and HD2 - no such issue. Sorry I am unable to test on the HD I sold it off 2 weeks ago.

Other HD owners - please feedback whether you face similar problems?

I have a DIGI prepaid line too ; honestly I find DIGI data download speeds on EDGE ( my area no 3G yet) is fast , if not sometimes even better than my other Celcom 3G postpaid line. Your issues of telco signals on and off is serious - you should report back to Digi to see whether is their area problem.

Unless you are staying in a far remote area , you should not be facing such issues that's why I say is serious especially if you say cannot call n sms - data download slow maybe but definately cannot be cannot call/sms - these are very basic requirements.

I do not wish to pour cold water - your handset might have problem ( don't ever discount this probability) - try it with another phone using the same sim card
In my past 10+ years using pda phones - I have return and replaced 3 pdas FOC and change motherboard in one FOC because of hardware issues. Do this before your warranty is up

ROM version : 1.18.707.3 (23358) WWE
Radio version : 1.09.25.14

Where to check for latest radio version? How can i upgrade?
confusing flash ROM and radio  rclxub.gif
*
Latest radio for HD : 1.17.25.0.9 = refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466274 . The radio is for your call/data reception. Installing new radio WILL NOT erase your data But you still need to HSPL your device in order to do it

Flash ROM will change your whole unit operating system - all your data and installed 3rd party programs will be erased

I suggest you test your sim with another basic phone first when you detect call/sms issues to discount is hardware problem. IF you have bought from SIS , normally within 7 days you get unit back. If AP possibly up to 2 weeks or more. Replacement FOC that is exchange normally within 7 days purchase

QUOTE(Lineage @ Dec 14 2009, 11:47 PM)

Why we need to flash cooked ROM?  rclxub.gif
*
We flash cooked rom because we like to "play" with our phones and maximise its potential. Microsoft firmware is "safe" and developed for the masses to ensure no major complaints that it is unuseable or hanging issues.

It is analogous to why people esp guys spend Rm 20000 - RM 50000 just to upgrade their car sound system or similar amount to modified their car's engine/transmission or bodykit. Sometimes these costs is similar to car value or even exceed the car's value. For example I have a very old Cefiro ( bought it new and use it 19 years ) - one guy bought it from me and spend 3 times the car value to modify it just for drifting purposes. A more common comparison is most people will spend a fortune renovating their houses whose costs usually is 50 % to 100 % the house value
In all these cases why do people do it ?? : to be different ? to have a better enjoyment of their asset ? to maximise the potential and value of their asset ? or too much money dunno where to spend on ?

Off digressing, we flash cooked roms because we want to maximise and "push" our units to perform beyond what Microsoft intended;. Some of the advantages of cooked roms are:

1. Better memory utilization : MS roms memory built up very fast and if you browse a lot and multitasking, you find out of memory issues fast. Cooked roms nowadays by default increased memory by 10-20 % ( depending on which cook )

2. MS roms builtin a lot of stuffs which majority don't used; so in most cooked roms these are removed as you cannot uninstalled it in the original unit

3. Some cooks offered CLEAN or LEAN rom which left a basic functioning unit ( my favourite) : I then install in what I like and I save at least up to 20MB of storage memory from MS rom

4. Some cooks build into their roms a wide range of useful utilities for those who are too "lazy" to find/research/or install such utilities

5. Some guys change their roms because they preferred the new icons setup and icons layout ( these if you put in some effort you can easily do yourself ). For example I like CellPro lite roms but I hate his color scheme /icons - so after flashing I change all the icons/folders/layout according to my own taste. I like his rom because it is really lean compared to others and offer fantastic low memory utilizations

6. Microsoft is continually upgrading their builds and all these cooks capitalize on it and built it in theoir roms ; for example the HD the manila build has progresed to 21885 and at WM 6.5.3 while the original HD firmware till now has remain unchange.

Now you can run WM6.5 ( so many versions available, at last count at least 15 ) on the HD.

You can also now run Manila 2.5 with some bugs on the HD ( which was developed for the HD2 ) or run another version of WM6.5 ( build 280@@@ onwards ) where is more finger friendly and obvious start menu relocated to bottom. The variety of cooked roms is fascinating

So guys who do not like to see the same "dashboard when driving" every day change their "dashboard" often . In our case of roms, this do not incurred any cost just time to install/test/evaluate - so much so if you look thro the XDA forums you find many regulars ( including me) who just cannot stay long with just the same rom and continually changing to find their "ultimate solution " - we are what every one calls "Rom freaks or rom addicts"

Use WIN XP to avoid any hanging issues and subsequent "bricking" your phone. Don't even consider Win 7 and Vista : there are already so many cases of failures.

then after a while.. I re-plug in.. nothing have show.. there is not respond of detecting anything.. see nothing in my device manager..  rclxub.gif

now I download new version of the Mobile Device center.. bla bla bla.. no luck.. window cannot detect the device... rclxub.gif

wat to do now..  icon_question.gif

is there any different using a HTC usb cable and a normal miini USB cable? thanks..
*
The USB cable do affect it especially if you are using those types that are make just for charging only> I do have similar experience - so all my additional USB cables I buy the higher quality type ( cost me abour RM 30 ) instead those RM8-10 type. Actually some of these chea[po types sometimes is OK but not reliable

If you are syncing on Windows 7 - this can be a issue ; I have tried on Windows 7 - is very very slow.

Personally I find it is better to sync with XP /or Vista. Anyway I sync with the Windows once every/2 months just to have my outlook.pst file updated.

For daily sync, I do it with Misssing Sync on my MAC which is I'd say is 100 % reliable and many/"thousand" times better than sync with XP. I always say is a big shame on Microsoft part till now do not have a 100 % reliable and fast sync solution on their Windows PDA with its own O/S. Instead a different O/S ( this case Apple MacOSX) can do a million times better job. I have about 2000 contacts and about 100 + calender entries - sync with my Mac takes about 1 minute and is 100% accurate and relaiable 100% of the time while on XP - it takes about 10 minutes ( and sometimes it hangs or seeing the sync logo circling and circling, dunno why )

Try this : start>settings>Connections>USB to PC and then UNCHECKED the box next to: Enable advanced network functionality...it is the only option on that screen - and it is either checked or unchecked.

I use USPL 2.5..but the result cause screen distortion..and I read through XDA forum..they said need to flash to SPL 1.56 to overcome this problem.. rclxub.gif
So how? hmm.gif
*
If you are installing the newer cooked roms ( eg your quoted Energy) - it is best to use USPL 1.54 from the beginning. You did not mentioned clearly what is your problem - "distorted screen" - is it blurry fuzzy iomages and greenish color scheme ??? If so, you have make a mistake in your flashing : these 2 steps are crucial : READ it again every word of it - I guess most probably you have skip the overwrite part ( BOLD listed)

# (USPL3d) Run HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe from the download in step (USPL1b). Do not click any buttons on the screen when the application appears.
# (USPL3e) Copy RUU_Signed.nbh that you extracted from the download in step (USPL1a) and overwrite the one in the directory where you ran HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe from. If you get an error message saying that the file is already in use that is because you clicked one or more buttons in the HardSPL application window once it appeared. If that happens to you, exit from it, start it again, and DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING YET.

I have use USPL 1.54 to flash my previous htc HD countless times - you name the cooked rom , most probably 9/10 I have tried it. And I'd say most people failed in the steps I listed above

1 more thing..Normally how do you back up your program as well as setting? I use SPB Backup..but I dont know it can support restore to different ROM or not  hmm.gif
*
You can only restore fully to and from SAME rom only with exceptions personal data : PIM, Mail, My Documents. Normally the system data if restored will have problems - ranging from unbootable programs, hanging issues

Example : If you are using Energy rom version 1 you can FULLY restore 100 % without problems back to Energy rom version 1
If say you change rom to Energy ver 2 ( same cook but different version ) : you can use ver 1 backup to restore : 100 % can restore PIM, Mail, Documents but not your system/program data. You will notice after restore sometimes you cannot install any more additional programs besides the hanging/freeze and unlaunchable programs.

Based on my experience Sprite Backup is very much better and I'd say is 100% reliable restoraing while I give SPB Backup a 95%
