Sony Ericsson have released the K850i, the latest high-end Cybershot handset.

Packing a beefy 5 megapixel camera with 16x zoom and Xenon flash, the K850 weighs in at 118 grams, ever so slightly more than the earlier K800 and K810 devices. Available in Luminous Green or Velvet Blue and newly released Quicksilver Black, the phone has a 2.2inch 262k colour screen, 40mb internal memory and an M2 slot, with a 512MB stick thrown in for good measure.

Although initially sounding similar to the earlier K series handsets, the K850 does come with a few key improvements. First, the phone is the first to include an automatic lens cap, activated by pressing the camera button. It also comes with a new image manipulation program, Photo Fix, to automatically improve light balance on pictures. Sony Ericsson has also said that while in photo mode, only camera shortcut buttons will be illuminated on the main keyboard, as opposed to all buttons being lit all of the time.

Modding firmware

Tutorial: How to Flash K850i Firmware?
Please refer to here for the guide

u need three files,
1.firmware(the extension file should be .mbn)
2.Regions and languages (the extension file should be.fs)
3.the custom files>> this also required

all that files u can download from here

for firmware, u need to register at that forum,
just a few step and free,so u can register there..

u should go for generic apac

for custom pack, u need to:
using FileSystem tool, and copying the files in the zip (or just Customize.xml) to \TPA\PRESET\CUSTOM\

Tutorial: How to mod camdriver into K850i?
1. Download A2uploader and extract it. Install ggsetup-2.2.0.1.exe.
2. Execute "a2uploader.exe" and select "FileSystem Tool".
3. Switch off the phone, remove the battery and re-insert it. Hold down "C" button on the phone then connect it to the PC through USB cable (do not release the "C" button yet!!)
4. Until a2uploader finish loading the phone and says "READY", then only release the "C" button
5. Go to: ifs > settings > camera
6. You will saw 2 files named: "camdriver0.dat" and "camdriver1.dat"
7. Just drag the modded "camdriver0.dat" you downloaded from the above into a2uploader.
8. After the file is uploaded, then press the "Shutdown FS Manager" (Very imporant, after you finished uploading files to the phone FS you should click Shutdown FS Manager. Other wise all changes made will be lost.)
9. Close the a2uploader then remove the USB Cable from the phone.
10. Switch on your K850i and start taking pictures!! DONE!!

Tutorial (by neo_sharky):

it is called Taurus fonts.
to change it, simply follow these steps;

1. open a2uploader
2. connect your phone
3. go to tpa>preset>system>fonts
4. if u wanna backup old fonts, right click at the fonts file and then click read. when done, delete it by right clicking to it too. (remember! delete all files in the folder)
5. drag your desired fonts into the folder (normally, only 5 files are required, 4 TTF files and 1 XML file)
6. click shutdown fs manager
7. you're done! turn on your phone and walla!! enjoy your new fonts icon_rolleyes.gif

*after using this font, chinese won't work. Mod at your own risk!!

i dont know. none of my fren or i experienced myself wif C902 james bond edition, so cant tell much nod.gif

im not sure bro. if u accidentally change the settings, u can redo the flash step before. btw, K850 mega bass (after modding) definitely pwned W980 bass quality tongue.gif

how about the other 4 file inside that folder?
btw, I'm using Bijou lvl 3 amp with Fiio E5 connected to my phone.. (after I using the amp, my phone battery can last it longer)

So far of all the camdriver I've tested, I personally think that Cybershot v7.26 rc3 by adolf vicious is the best camdriver..
Flash on the object wont make the background dark, the color is superbly nice when light condition is very good, Night mode is brighter (flash off) compared to other camdrive..
But the new camdriver Cyber sHUT v2.1 is not bad also.. actually Cyber sHUT v2.2 is available already, but I haven't download it.. you can get it from esato.com
I've swapped my k850i to Viewty, so I don't have k850i for me to play with now..
I wanted to swap back to k850i, but couldn't find anybody to swap cry.gif

okay. in the guide stated only drag the customize_upgraded.xml file onto the a2uploader. if u curious bout the remaining four, why dont u drag all of em onto a2uploader as well. mybe u'll find different results. who knows? do shout the reviews here if there any improvement. hehe

How about the problem when I remove the battery all my clock and date run?
should I send back to SE service center to check it out?

i dont quite understand bout your statement here all my clock and date run is it after u remove the battery, when u insert it back, turn on the phone, it prompts for setting the date and the time back?

hmm... see when I free only go there.. mine nearest service center at sunway but the staff all so LCLY sad.gif

anyway,i've flashed my phone to Hong Kong firmware and i got both simplified and traditional chinese to read and write.
but there is another problem coming in.

When i boot up my phone,then i use it,for less than 1 minute of usage,the screen will go blank but the keypad light one and the vibration still got,and i press the camera key and the camera is working,but i see nothing on the phone,may i know the problem?

OMG!! Cyber sHUT v3.0 camdriver produced file size around 2.8MB-3.2MB when photo quality is set to "Fine"
While if photo quality is set to "Normal", the file size is 1.3MB-1.8MB, which i think is more suitable

wanna ask,my k850i right touchpad seem to have some problem.it is quite difficult to response when i touch compare to others.another thing when i press the left and down navigation key,it will be automatically press the right touchpad.if i send to repair,how much is the cost and if there is any recommendation shop around KL and Kuantan??

I recommend u get Sandisk M2 8GB ultra mobile... just only RM 119 sold at All It Hypermarket.. biggrin.gif

microSD should inserted the other way round..means the gold plated on the microSD should face upwards of the phone
i'm using 4GB SDHC microsd..so far no lagging problem..

I got A data Micro SDHC from Pc Zone 8gb Class 6 for rm68 few days ago. Package comes with 2 adapter, mini sd adapter and sd adapter.

I'm not sure why pc zone selling so cheap(bulk selling rm1xx) and most low yat stores ran out of m2 stocks.

Anybody use A2uploader to reflash ? since my phone recently always blackout(the sreen) & not to mention the BROD thingy, I decided to try to DIY reflashing it with A2uploader. I did it although I'm a noob, I just paste the custpack & reflash the FS. My problem still exist & give me more instead, now when i took pics & vids, it doesnt store mad.gif but others still work brows.gif

Anybody can share a good firmware & custpack please ? I'm confused what to choose at the SEuser forum blush.gif

the camera illuminates, the keypad illuminates but there is no life from the screen or phone, and the only way to get it off then is to take out the battery.

guys why is my sister;s k850i screen will blackout once i slightly touch the keypad? I slight touch on the keypad without even pressing the button would make the screen turn off.

only got 2 posibility make this happen..

BROD will not only happen on 2nd hand phone, it happened on my friend's newly bought K850i too..
Just use SE secret code > * < < * < * then go to "Service tests" and test all the function lo..

i got similar BROD problem (or whatever they name it) with my mom;s k850i..

screen light goes off even the slightest of touch to certain buttons....must wait till the keypad lights go off then only can press any other buttons back to normal...

i went to Sony ericsson service centre klcc, they said lcd screen problem...

since my mom lost the warranty card (its ori set from midland & they said can't claim warranty without the warranty card), they quote me rm280 to change the lcd... can be repaired in 1 day (within a few hours only)....

so i said never mind la...i want to find warranty card first...

but is it true aaa change lcd cost rm280 and it can be done within a few hours can siap ?

bro scorps, for flash theme, u must use only those with the same icon as K850. meaning, u cant use flash theme with Walkman icon, Satellite icon (for gps purpose) or just camera icon instead of cybershot icon. hope this will help

i've tried to ask bout K850 price here in Ipoh. one of the shop selling original SE's phone still selling this phone at RM1250. the price is still expensive for me, but i think it is really worth to buy it smile.gif

if you wanna fill those 8Gigs with songs, videos etc. it is better for you to get a M2 not a micro SD. i've read somewhere that BROD usually happen when the memory card is filled with a lot of things (for micro SD only not on M2)

i think all versions of k850 firmware got problem..
my adik got this type of phone.. (lol.. ask RM1.2k from mom)
his phone very buggy also..

already change LCD, cost him RM120..

glad i din buy this phone also.. quite jeles with him at first time..
because i need to fork out my own money, so i buy cheaper C702 instead..
got GPS also.. hahaha..

with the latest firmware, now no more issues with this phone..

now still got 430mb left ,
and some times when i wan take some pic,
it said "another applivation is running. Close it and then start the camera."

I do have many cam driver but none of them are without error.. I've tried all the camdriver I had
I've read a post at esato.com stated that modded camdriver will surely give you that error..

regarding the lagging problem when opening the media player, is it becoz of the modding too? kinda experienced it too.

now i know why it displayed 'Too many apps running...' come out. at first, it do bother me, but now, im ok already thumbup.gif

it's kinda frustrating when you want to take photo and the "another application is running.." error came out
then you have to restart the phone and start the camera again..
but then, by that time the object that you want to capture is already gone away..
that's the consequences of using modded camdriver..but the photo quality and function is better than original though
anyone else that don't get the error with modded camdriver??

for me, it is quite okay. but i dont know how to compare becoz didnt use any firmware besides what i had listed before. my fren used to flash his K850 with ORANGE firmware. the menus and standby screen is a bit different from the GENERIC one.


i went to the SE service centre in Ipoh just now. i've told them that my K850 is abit hard to press its volume rocker. later, they took my phone inside their technician room. when they came out, they said, mybe the center board got problem or dirt accumulated at my volume rocker. the later reason is acceptable, but center board got problem? wtf? wanna 'kaut untung lebih' ka?

if you put the theme that you want to use on phone memory and set it,
will it still change to the default theme after removing the USB cable??
cos after I restart my phone, it will change to the default crystal theme if the theme that I want to use is on memory card, so I copied all the themes to phone memory and it works...

if AP, i dont trust the technician if we send to them for repair and services. they can change our hardware inside without we knowing it. yes, Original is abit expensive but, also need to look at the pocket too tongue.gif

I dont send to thier company because I dont really trust their technician..

Added: currently i've converted my M*X*S number to C*L*C*M. after that, i try to set the 3G setting, by typing SET and send it to 20999. but until now, i didnt received any confirmation about the 3G setting. does the C*L*C*M got line problem? btw, does it affected by the custom files we upload when flashing the phone? plzz help

when i flash using generic firmware, the setting for gprs is automatically downloaded when i first start up the phone. later, after i updated the firmware using SEUS, the setting is no longer automatically downloaded. btw, the firmware stated China not Generic.

mybe your memory card got problem. try reformat it and see whether it works or not. or if u dont want to reformat, try scan and fix (if got any problems) the memory card

take out ur memory card without turn off ur phone ,
then refresh ur media player ,

ok now I have problem after flashing with A2uploader
accidentally 'disconnected' during flashing.
my phone lights(keypads & camera) always on, since I have brod, i could not see what is the error is
I call my no(using other phone), no responce. tidak dapat dihubungi.......
is it dead ? no hope to repair ?
Anyone having this similar experience before ?

lerr.. that camdriver is suppose to work like what i said la..
normally u half press to focus, then fully press to capture rite?

that camdriver now instead of half press to focus, it uses +/- EV value to control focus..

like -2.0 for macro maybe 10cm,
-1.3 maybe for 20cm..
up untill infinity lah..

the modder of that camdriver re-writes all the code so that it works like that la..

so, now using manual focus, u just need to bring ur phone forward or backward to adjust lor..

Tutorial: How to mod camdriver into K850i?
1. Download A2uploader and extract it. Install ggsetup-2.2.0.1.exe.
2. Execute "a2uploader.exe" and select "FileSystem Tool".
3. Switch off the phone, remove the battery and re-insert it. Hold down "C" button on the phone then connect it to the PC through USB cable (do not release the "C" button yet!!)
4. Until a2uploader finish loading the phone and says "READY", then only release the "C" button
5. Go to: ifs > settings > camera
6. You will saw 2 files named: "camdriver0.dat" and "camdriver1.dat"
7. Just drag the modded "camdriver0.dat" you downloaded from the above into a2uploader.
8. After the file is uploaded, then press the "Shutdown FS Manager" (Very imporant, after you finished uploading files to the phone FS you should click Shutdown FS Manager. Other wise all changes made will be lost.)
9. Close the a2uploader then remove the USB Cable from the phone.
10. Switch on your K850i and start taking pictures!! DONE!!

Oh, i've try 4.7 and 5.0cx cam driver last night.. I think 4.7 is effective for a night shoot.. I try switch off all lamp and take some picture.. It very nice.. a result is like that all lamp were not switch off.. haha.. I love it.. thumbup.gif

But if u take shoot to close to object, the background will be dark.. Is it caused by the lense only focus to the object? Because, if i try a wide area shoot, it is ok.. I've heard there is a driver witch reduced the problem about the dark background... hmm.gif

Ya, i using a2uploader.. Just drag the files into location said by the tutorial.. 1 more thing, i have try this 4.7cx cam driver.. It not effectively for micro shoot.. Because when camera focus till get the sharp picture, it reverse focusing and become blur.. So i cant take picture to close to object for micro..

I think i wanna try 5.0 to test the manual focus.. hehe

Hi, most of the antivirus software will detect a2uploader as trojan or virus. But don't worry, the a2uploader is 100% safe!! As many of the forumers use this software to mod their k850i.
What you can do is actually temporary disable your antivirus software when you want to use the a2uploader. After finish using a2uploader then re-enable back your antivirus software. Or you can add the a2uploader application to the exclusion list or safe list of your antivirus.
Hope you'll be able to mod your k850i after that. Happy modding!!

Are you using night portrait mode or auto mode to snap the photos that causes the dark background?
Mostly night mode will solve that problem.

hello k850 owners ... i wanna know if anyone has similar problem to my k850

previously, this phone is doesn't not have any problem. But starting last 2 weeks, when i use the phone eg. sms-ing, playing game , the whole screen went black and the kepads have white lights on constantly. Whatever i do didn't not change anything, i had to wait for a few minutes for the keypad lightings to go off, then only the phone "resume" its function.

Anyone encounter this problem? cry.gif

I'm using Cyber sHUT v3.2 currently..
this camdriver very hard to take shot at night. I use night portrait mode with flash, the background will be very dark until cant see the background. If without flash and EV1.0, the photo will turn redish..

if use my 32" LCD TV which is widescreen.. so, I cant see more post..

i just flash my phone to newest firmware,
R1FA037 K850 MAIN
(K850_R1FA037_MAIN_HUTCHISON_SO_RED52.rar )
but just flash the .mbn file(main),
for language and customize still use the old one

it's working,

I have the original extracted FS files... So I have the ori language file.. You can PM me when you need it...

I don't think that the language file included in it is the ori language file.. Cause I've tried that yesterday..
It actually change the right soft keys from "Contact" to "Adrs bk"..
And in the camera settings menu, it change the "Black and White" to "yellow filter", "Sepia" to "red filter" and many more..


Yesterday I was using Cybershot Bestpic v8.0.. the night shot still cant satisfy me..
Currently trying CX v6.4...haven fully utilize it though..
the best candriver for me is still the bestpic v7.26

*Changed Manual Colour Correction codes:
You can now mix different shades to add better colours to your images!

have tried the CX6.4.. It's fun playing with all the manual settings..
But the downside is it quite lag, and you have to set many things before you can take the picture..
By the time you've set the camera, the object is passed already =(
I still prefer point-and-shoot camera..it's more easy and faster to use..

the auto function is ok..but the night portrait mode is very slow and lag.. plus the result is not that good

i'm using K850i Velvet Blue, AP set.
i bought it last year at june 2008. RM1180 for that time.

using 4GB micro SDHC, no lag at all..
and always use a2uploader to flash in camdriver, sound drive, flash menu etc.. modify the main layout, now playing layout and more..
looks like it can be done more than a nokia phone... yea i'm using N76 too..

but there's a little part, dont know why K850i still cant use VKP, so still cannot break the length limit of message ringtone.. waiting for expert...

so nice so far. but just that i've format it four times, when it becomes blok. haha...

now i'm using camdrive CybershotÖ_v8.0_BestPicColorÖ_for_k850
and i modify the night potrait mode, adding in Cybershot v7.26 rc4 by adolf vicious. (if not mistaken). take nice photos too, but aiming for Renoir now...
