Hi all,

Nice discussions here. I've started my own tank 2 weeks ago. Since I am a poor student, I've decided to start with low maintenance plant and a low tech 20L tank. Here is my lame a$$ tank.

Its still a little bit empty at the moment. I am planning to plant more moss to cover the rest of the gravel.

Spec lah...

Capacity : 20L Tank
Light :18w Philip E27 6500k
Substrate : Normal gravel mix with ADA Aquasoil Amazonia.
Flora : Java Moss and Water Wisteria
Fauna : Plakat Betta

Any comment? smile.gif

p/s: sorry for the crappy pic. Took it with my 5years old Pns.

It's nice to know you did some research before hand. THough I'd dose c02.. but I guess moss could take it without c02. biggrin.gif

Do keep us updated.

Thanks Drew, I am thinking of having a DIY CO2. May be I'll try it. BTW can I use CO2 fire extinguisher(The black one) for CO2 injection? I have an empty one in my store room. hahahah

Again, thanks. smile.gif

looks great for a low tech planted tank... plants seems vr healthy... no picture of ur betta??...

Thanks catacombs. The plant is doing well but its too early to say. It has only been 2 weeks. hehehe

The beta is quite difficult to snap using my crap digi camera. I'll try to shoot one on my film slr but may be later because currently it is loaded with a b&w.

Thanks. smile.gif

Hi guys.
An update on my lame low tech tank. Took out the betta for spawning, put in a few tetras and reset the tank last week.
I also trimmed down the Wisteria and added a 2 inch DC fan.

Scaping wise, quite a good effort for a first timer!
I would do something about the temperature.. and lighting IMO. biggrin.gif

Added on August 15, 2009, 10:04 pmWhat fan is that? I would want it to face the water surface 90degrees.. so it can give it's best to your tank..

I am using 23watt PL light. Do I need higher wattage? The tank is 3.5g

From what I can see.. mosses should do fine with 23w..

Keep it up!

How are you dosing c02 by the way?

Drew

I am comtemplating about making this tank an excel only tank and see how it goes. If needed I will do DIY injection with ladder.

Can blyxa and crypts tolerate Excel dosing?

I would say the moss cannot tolerate heavy dosing of excel.. I hear it's the same for japonica..

Well then...DIY Co2 it is...

an update on my 3.5g

added one more fan and the temperature now is 28 degree at mid day and 26 during mid night.
The blyxa japonica at the back of the tank is melting some of its leaves but the front one is not...
The rest of the plant seems to be doing good.
I have a snail...a ramshorn I believe, can't seems to take a good picture of it though.

nice nice...
anyhow u position the fan, make sure it creates good water ripple all across the water surface... good water ripple can dissipate heat better...
as u mentioned planning on shrimps as fauna, better to keep everything low tech... and run ur tank for at least a month and more frequent water change so ur tank could be cycled properly...

mmm...RM200 or even RM300 seems reasonable for the tank..but RM900++ for the lighting is a killer hahahaha....

Guess have to source out for more affordable light fixtures..diy is way out..i am not much of a handyman.

Another option is a clip light fixtures. 6500K 24 watt PL each but I cracked my last tank because of the clip, now too nervous to use it again hahaha

Hi,

I am on a prowl for a co2 tank for a new 7gallon project. I saw a 1L ISTA aluminium tank for RM290 at East Aqua.

Is it a good price?
How long will it last?

Thanks smile.gif

Hi, i plan to start a nano planted aquarium. I am relying heavily on DIY due to budget constraint. First timer, doing some readings. Haven't buy/do anything concrete yet..just visualizing it in mind.

1. I plan to DIY my own driftwood using a rambutan tree branch. Already know the basic steps. My doubt is, how to make it submerge (non floating) inside the tank? Also, the color now is brownish, would it be a good idea to burn it slightly to gives it a blackish (charcoal-ish) feel?

2. I know a planted aquarium needs a good soil full of nutrients. Just wondering izit possible to use the soil for normal potted plants for this purpose? I plan to mix them with some sand from the seaside to add more texture.

3. Some aquariums have background, while some not. What's are your guys stand on this?

Hope to hear some input. Thanks
*
1. I have no idea smile.gif

2. You can try Diana Walstad method HERE

3. I prefer plain background either white or black

_________________________________________________________________________________________

@Drew : Thanks for the input sir. The light is a MIC Hai Yong brand 24watt from my cracked 3.5 gallon. Not good enough for this tank I supposed smile.gif

How about this layout?
