The tuition fee is not expensive as far as I am concerned. It's $100,000 Hong Kong Dollar per year if not mistaken.
Accommodation (perhaps catering as well) in the university is relatively cheap, if I am not mistaken.
But the rest should follow the normal rate (ie expensive) in HK. Transport, entertainment etc.

But, I would say you should consider if you want to study in HKU.
One of the concern is you are not going to have a very good studying experience.
The culture is similar to most Asia places, still people that don't queue up for buses, still in buses can quarrel, simply throw rubbishes etc.
UK, US, Aus and other popular countries for studies not only do well in education part, but experience part as well.
That's why you don't listen people heading HK for studies.

As a HKU student, I think I am qualify enough to give some comments.

For me, I am doing BEng (Logistic) + BBA (Finance) , double degree. Choosing which country for further education is really depends on what you are gonna study, and whats your expectation towards life. For me, I want knowledge and to learn the tactics to be an entrepreneur.

Frankly, I do agree that you might get "exceptional" experience in UK, the weather, "culture", and perhaps, social status (recognition). For me, I think UK is just suitable for the "boring" subjects, eg, pure science, math, literature, etc ... Thats why I have made up my mind not to go UK despite I got the offer from Imperial, which is to study aerospace engineering. For me, I prefer the colorful life of studying business, analyzing the case studies, and calculate the math that does not involve x,y,z but $. Although some of the business program in UK is quite reputable, but I think you would not like to study business in a place that shops close at 5 pm, since business program is about interaction with people.

For HK, especially HKU, which is just 5 minutes from central, where IFC, Bank Of China, Bank Of America, Cheung Kong, AIG, Citi located. Although I am just a year 1 student, I always get the chance to interview in big firms, applying for internship for my summer holiday. It is really not an unusual scene watching everyone wearing suit walking cross by you, and remember, the salary for a fresh grad is around $13,000 - 15,000, averagely.

And for your information, people in the HK island, especially those near to central and Causeway Bay, are much highly educated, where most of them can speak English in the US or UK accent (Many of them who chose to migrate to US / UK / Canada during 1997 had come back). Since most of the tourist will prefer to hang around in Kowloon site particularly in Tsim Tsa Tsui and Mong Kok, they might have the misconception that all HK people are the way they think. While, I must admit that people in New territory are lowly educated, and some of them might still throw rubbish everywhere, but as my friend who studies in Sunderland said, the condition in Hk is much more better than there.

Another reason you need to consider is the level of respect you might gain when you are overseas. FYI, Malaysian are among the very few nation they respect, due to our advantage in knowing tons of languages and dialects (For me, I have no problem in Eng, Malay, Cantonese, Putonghua, Hakka, Hokkien). I bet you will just be another yellow skin asian guy in the eye of UK people, and I doubt whether they know where Malaysia is ?

Added on May 8, 2009, 3:24 amOh, another point need to mention, as we all know, China might be the next leader in the world, and for the mindset of mainlanders, study in UK and US are just for the extreme rich (with the exception of top uni) , but places like HK and SG are the sign of intelligence. Check on google news to verify this. I was quite surprise to hear from my friend studying in UK told me that the mainlanders there are quite lazy, and will spend a lot of money in buying unnecessary stuff, cause the mainlanders in the HKU are not just, but extremely smart.

Added on May 8, 2009, 3:38 amOh, and FYI again, if you were to do traditional engineering course such as mechanical, civil, electrical, you better have it in uk or us, but if you were to do the interesting engineering such as financial or logistic engineering, you can bet hk is the best choice for you. Just think of the 4 pillars of HK, Finance, Logistic, Tourism, Service. But I heard the government is changing soon to include R&D, particularly in life science.

It has nothing to do with plagiarism, but infringe copyrights law. Plagiarism is the term used when you copy the work of others without acknowledge the copyright holder or state the sources, or you simply do cut and paste in the assignment.

Plagiarism is a serious offense, do not try to attempt it as I have the experience of being caught.
