Hello all!

It's been a while since LYN Book Club is created but we have not been having much activities around. Heck our threads aren't going very well either. Hence why I would like everyone to chip in with suggestions to improve our traffic and participation here.

First and foremost, it needs to be plastered in the global LYN announcement (that red bar on top) like the DC++, so that everyone in the forum is aware that we exist here. I think it was not announced anywhere that this sub-section exist except from the suggested thread in the Main Feedback section.

Secondly, would it be wise for the name to stick as *book* club, when there are also threads on magazines, mangas, comics, newspaper, etc?? Yes, I agree that the intention are more focus on books, but perhaps a thought for a re-name should be consider. *Reading*, perhaps?

Thirdly, there are books/magazine related threads all over LYN! Some in Kopitiam, some in Hobbies section, etc. These threads are somewhat active, so if they were to be moved to this section, the traffic might also be shifted.

Fourthly, once in a while, it would be good if the frontpage of LYN to have a story entry about books (events coverage, etc) while giving a link to this sub-section.

I'll think up of more.

Reading Circle sounds just nice nod.gif

I'd say another good idea is to have a contest in here that might attract more visitors biggrin.gif
It's a cheesy idea, but you gotta admit it, if the prize is good, alot of people will come here wink.gif

contest? what kind? who read the most? like back in school where we got projek nilam and prizes were given during assembly. biggrin.gif i think it's kinda normal for a book club not getting as much attention as other forums, even in reality books had always been associated with calmness, quietness. unless the admin wants to close it down due to lack of activities here, we shouldnt worry much right? let the people who are really interested in reading come here, its better than some random forumer spamming craps in here. btw, Reading Circle sounds cool. smile.gif

nah,i was joking la. smile.gif

the prizes could also be a discount voucher from a bookstore, so no need for one specific title for the prizes. the only problem is, who's going to sponsor? sweat.gif

Enabling post counts for this section will definitely work in increasing traffic volume, but it will also attract trolls and spam. I guess this is out?

Some book forums I visit have events where people pick a book to read, and then discuss chapter by chapter. It doesn't have to be a new book, sometimes they reread and discuss to better understand it.

Encourage people to write book reviews? I did a few but then got crushed under a mountain load of work. And killing trolls in RWI was too much fun.

Why not expand the reading circle to the literary circle? Budding writers can post their works and get critique. Fan-fiction is ever popular, and original work might lead to us discovering a gem of a writer.

That's about it for now. Hungry.

to attract them to lurk here means they'll be part of LYN big communities. the girl usually likes to talk on movies and the other one more on music.. but we all shared the same interest reading over S.K series. she red some that i haven't and a way on to another la.

but i bet there's more for us to do to lurk people to come here often.. i created a special thread for general chatting/spamming in anime shrine and it has reached 13th stage already. and they can mix up all anime in one discussion as well as planned the upcoming gathering. i guess we can create one like that where we can talk about the cell and then a little mix of dan brown's deception point. because we talked about one particular titles/authors, we narrow it down to one point only. that's why it won't be that flavorsome.

well i named it /as/ very own late nite thread. then why don't we name it /bc/ late nite (bookworm edition).

i am waiting a green light for our mod to give permission for me to open that mentioned topic. if u agreed i will open it for us to talk general all 360 about books.

I think enabling post count, like many has said before this, is a double-edged sword. Yes, people will probably come and post something, but the invariable troll will also be here as well.. Personally, I kinda like the pace here. Just nice for me... biggrin.gif

Anyways, I do agree on having a "red alert" banner at top announcing book club's existence. But I suggest having that "announcement" banner not only announcing our subforum, but also some activity that we have here. Maybe something on a smaller scale first (as opposed to the "contest" idea), let's just have a book-swap first? Something like, each of us create a (reasonable) book wish list, then we pair up with another person, and the pair needs to get the book for the other person, something like that.

I believe the "book review" thing is already going on. We are already sharing our opinions on books etc, just that we don't have a proper thread, a standard that we follow for reviewing books (thumbs up, star rating system?). I think the books discussion we have now is more interactive, compared to reading a whole review..

Agreed about the post count. It'll definitely attract spammers and mess this place up. I'd rather don't have post count enabled than have spammers and trolls in here, IMHO sweat.gif

How about we create a smalll banner for the LYN Book Club? Something like the one I did for the Retrievers thread *points to sig* Creating an awareness of the club is the first step. smile.gif

I think that's a good start.. I didn't know of this thread till this month only because I took the time to scroll through all the topics.. smile.gif

Awareness will be a good step... will try to ask if my friend is interested in joining here.

She's also asking me to join her in book swapping.. we are still in the process of compiling our books.

Hi there,

I also just found out about this thread until recently...now I've mostly been lurking, but not many people have been posting here. I like the idea of the book swapping...would love to be able to read other books without forking out so much money! The thing with that is,if we ever swap books, it could be a rule that the books are not damaged when returned...I've swapped books before with some people, and some of my books were just not taken care of properly...sad to say, I didn't swap books again from then on.

Reviews on books would be great as well...a lot of times, I read some books suggested by the reviewers in newspapers and stuff. smile.gif

reading is very wide taste.

its quite hard to find ppls who similar.

that why, traffic is lesser here.

example, lets say i love somerset maugham. i come in here and i see stephen king, kiyosaki and such, makes me like, nothing in commons.

encourage all to chat more guys. i shall make support to u all. i also like to reading one. and cos feyhime is here wub.gif

Im glad that u asked. I have a complaint! I couldnt find this LYN BOOK CLUB until I tried to started something in the Music forum cos i thou music is closer to those who might read books as well. i seriously thought there isnt any books thread existed in this LYN.

So, i think first thing to improve is to add the word 'BOOK' into the category name "hobbies, collectibles and model kits". Or simply change it to "hobbies" then make it fair in between bookworms and collectibles junkies. I do collect books but i never thou it is part of the collectibles doh.gif so i went to the music category sad.gif

Look at the topics in this LYN Book Clubs - we have a mass crowd of bookworms here and there is a big chance to do it better by putting this book club upright on the right place. Im sure there are more other bookworms around.

At the same time Im thinking, maybe true bookworms would seldom being a net-addict so they dont come to LYN tongue.gif

spot on.

bookworms prefer to be comfy in their reading bed/sofa rather than at a desk with a bright monitor.

If you want I can always upload the EMPTY banner so that you all can have fun with it?

As for Garage Sales, not at the moment until we get better momentum.

Anyone free to come up with competitions plan? I am thinking as well, will list them out later.

Book swapping sounds good too.

I would like to suggest a Text-tag to be rewarded to those that qualifies as below:
- give alot of book reviews thread
- active in the threads being posted (so that it doesn't seem like a copy-pasted from somewhere else, without even reading the book)
- getting alot of +1 for the reviews.

Text-tag something like my --> Shrine.Lowyat.NET Contributor.

There are no set rules of HOW to get the Text-tag.
What I would suggest is that it should be depending on when and how the Moderators decides.

What's the purpose? To encourage people to read more and be active in this section.
It is the same concept as the Contest idea, whereby you do something, you get reward(s).

Of course, it can be either the Text-tag or the Elite-tag; either one is fine.

Tbh, I don't see how a badge/sig/etc is going to improve traffic to this place. If you ask me, build the content and traffic will automatically be generated.

My suggestions for improving the Literary Lounge are as follows:

- Strong Moderation

- Enabling post counts

- Enabling User ratings for positive contributions to the LYNLL

- Tell your friends

- Enabling tags for different genres - Mystery, Modern Literature, Classic Literature, Comics, Manga, Teen, Fantasy, Sci-Fi etc

- Tell your friends

- Forum where book real life readings/clubs can be organised

- Trading post

edit: and finally

- tell your friends

Okay peeps, here's some feedbacks.

Announcement bar headline (the DC++ thingy) is a no go since LYN Literary Lounge isn't a global issue that involve every LYNers.

I am trying to get us removed from Hobbies but we'll have to wait a bit since the Admins are busy.

I've already started the book swapping thread, so please head over and participate!

As for promoting our beloved section, I'll like to call out to everyone to link this section in your signature while waiting for the banners to be done.

Banners> Please use "LYN Literary Lounge" yeah, name change is in order.

Trading is nay because that's not our priority for now.

Potential writers! Please post up your work too! If you have any aspiring writer friends, point them this way.

How about a book club? As in we choose a title and for about a month or a few weeks we slowly go through the book and discuss as we go along.

Hi guys!

How about we compile a list of Lowyat.net book lovers and the genres, authors, and titles in which they like to read. And we organize book club sessions based on the data collected or based on any requests given.

And before we launch any sessions, we will state the goal(s) of each session so that the participants won't be misinformed of what the topic of discussion will be about.

Of course, it would be great if we can drag other non-Lowyat.net members to participate in these book club sessions. We can make it grow! smile.gif

I wouldn't mind managing and organizing all this if all of us are willing to participate. smile.gif

Hope that we'll get somewhere soon with this! thumbup.gif
