Hi all Sifus,
1 stupid question, if i already set the cut off frequency in AVR, for example to 100Hz, what is the cut off frequency i should set at the Sub woofer? set as the same as the AVR setting or set highest?

Appreciate any help. Thanks.

My basic setup,

Front Speakers: Pioneer S-31-K

Surround Speakers: Pioneer S-31B-LR-K

Centre Speaker: Pioneer S-31C-K

Subwoofer: Pioneer S-51W

AVR: Pioneer VSX-519

LCD: Panasonic TH-L42U29K

Blu ray player: Panasonic DMP-BD45

Subwoofer: Monster cable

Speaker cables: Jalan Pasar cables with 12 gauge
(Read an article about the truth of speaker cable, speaker gauge is more important than material, aim for bigger gauge is your speaker cables are long)

HDMI: giraffe HDMI(Free), Panasonic HDMI(Free), US HDMI cable(bought 1 USD)
(Read many articles about this, digital signal will be either 1 or 0, you won't gain much performance by using expensive cable)

I would also start with the speakers and/or sub first. These normally give the most bang for the buck.
*
Noted, which speakers to upgrade? I am very happy with my current speakers set for music, but dunno why for movies, I always feel that something is missing... I need someone that knw my speakers to give suggestion. Thanks.

I suggest u test out well calibrated systems to find out what is the max potential for the audio and visual part. For me I'll go for a 92in or 100in projector setup first. I prefer the visual then next audio.
*
Thanks Danny, I tried to calibrate using my ears, smile.gif. Maybe due to my speakers' placement, not really help much.
:S, 92/100 inches not for my current room, I will need to 'upgrade' my house first before can I upgrade this.

Replace with an amplifier that can decode HD audio..
Any brand also can, not necessary Pioneer.
Because amp is the heart of HT..u should at least get a mid-range to high-end model. smile.gif

A good powerful amp can work with cheaper speakers BUT a good quality speakers cannot work with cheap and less powerful amp. tongue.gif

Currently I am using blu ray player to decode HD audio and pass to my AVR using LPCM. Just wondering, even if i were to buy the latest AVR that can decode HD audio, would it really make a different?

Below are what I have copied from Pioneer website, to utilize the technology such as Phase Control (which available in Pioneer AVR also), ABD, AFAST... Do I need to buy a Pioneer AVR?
High linearity port structure for deep and clear low frequency sound. (SS-31-LR-K/QL)
ABD and AFAST Technology (Patent pending) for standing wave control. (S-31-LR-K/QL)
Flush-surface design and round form enclosure for aesthetics.
Phase Control design for a dramatic improvement in multi-channel sound quality.
150 W (RMS) subwoofer for deep bass. (S-51W)

I thought BD45 is newer model than the BD60?

nagayem,

for RM1k, many choices out there, it's like mid-range already.
*
Is it? , I was just guessing from the model number, tongue.gif, BD45 looks much older version than BD60. smile.gif
Anyhow, that's meant there is nothing wrong with my BD player decoder.. Dunno what is lacking actually.

I think BD45 was released in 2010, whereas BD60 is 2009.

But BD45 might sit in a lower range compared to BD60.

Thanks for all the info, I get to know more about these speakers from Amazon website,
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-S-31-LR-Floo...32998444&sr=8-1
With combine with Celine Dion, Live in Las Vegas blu ray. I can feel like I were in the live concert. smile.gif
But for movies, even if i tried with 5 star rating movie, I can feel that something is missing, especially from the surround speakers.

As suggested earlier you might have to upgrade your speakers or AVR or both.

What is your budget? Then we can see whether it is better to spend on the speakers or the AVR.
*
My speakers and subwoofer are 1 set, so I dun think I want to change it at the moment, now considering to either upgrade my bluray player (Panasonic BD-45) or AVR (Pioneer VSX-519). Any recommendation? Do I need to get back Pioneer brand since all my speakers and subwoofer are pioneer too?

How far are your seats from the TV? Looks like it is quite far from your photo. Your TV 46 inch?

Close to 9/10 feet, to reach my ear level, my surround speakers are facing down from the top, did i do it right?

i'm no expert... but heard that if u want more of surround experience... the rear speakers should be place from 90 degrees - 110 degrees of the position u r sitting... n for more surround feeling, place the speakers abit further from the couch... can giv it try ^^

ohhhh also... for subwoofer it is best to be place near a corner where the soundwave can bounce in an L-shape rather den straight front n back... *cheers smile.gif
*
Thanks for the info, we are all learning from sifu here, btw, my surround speakers are facing down, still consider 90 to 110 degrees right?

guess so.. but i think ard ear level will be best...bcos if its pointing downwards then the soundwave will b bouncing up n down... den the sound will not be accurate....

Hmmm, thanks, any more comment or suggestion?

Not quite the same. The surrounds are meant to be more to the left and right so you can get effects coming from that direction.

Now they are on top and this would probably narrow down the surround effects.
*
I guess that is the reason why I feel something missing from my surround sound speakers, thanks for the information. smile.gif, I will place them horizontally from left and right.

The 90-110 deg is on a horizontal plane realtive to the sitting position, not vertically.

Sungai Long, same place as my house, smile.gif

<<As for the AVR, all are using the sameDAC.
Main differences comes from features.
VSX-521 is entry model without frontUSB.
VSX-1021 is 7.1ch & comes with iPhoneapps compatibility.
VSX-LX55 is THX Select2 compatible.
Best Regards,
Pioneer Malaysia>>

Since all of them using the same DAC, can I say that their performance is about the same, except higher end AVR gives more power. Is this application for others brand as well?

Why most ppl prefer Denon and Yamaha AVR?
